Julia: Naga's Blood

General

Base Stats

HP: 34 / 38 / 41
Atk: 32 / 35 / 38
Spd: 23 / 26 / 30
Def: 13 / 17 / 20
Res: 29 / 32 / 35

Julia has an Atk and Res focused stat line, with middling HP (for a mage) and low Spd and Def. She comes with the Naga tome, which deals effective damage to breath users and provides a slight Def and Res bump when attacked. It can be evolved into Divine Naga through the Weapon Refinery, trading the Def/Res boost for the ability to negate all enemy buffs. Her Res allows her to effectively use Ploys, and her high Atk allows her to KO or deal heavy chip damage to many of the meta's threats.

Unfortunately, Julia suffers from low Spd and Def stats. Without a -breaker or significant Spd-stacking, she is unlikely to be doubling many enemies for ORKOs. She is also doubled easily, which makes it especially dangerous for her to be in the range of a physical foe on the enemy phase.

Suggested Skill Sets

  • When multiple options are available, my personal recommendations (if any) will be in bold.
  • Budget options will be colored red.

Naga (Debuff support, Enemy Phase focused combat)

Spoiler

Usage Intention: Enemy Phase check for Dragons and Mages.

Asset/Flaw: +Atk or +Res/-Def or -Spd
Weapon: Naga
    Weapon Refinement: Effect
Assist: Flexible
Special: Iceberg
A Passive: Res and/or Atk boosting skill (see below), Close Foil
B Passive: Quick Riposte 3, Guard 3, Dull Ranged 3, or Lull Atk/Res 3
C Passive: [Stat] Ploy 3, or Flexible
Sacred Seal: [Stat] Ploy, [Stance], Quick Riposte, or Flexible

Overview

This set utilizes her high Res stat to ploy enemies. Naga, with the effect refinement, enables her to check Dragons on the enemy phase. She can also check Tomes, but the lack of built-in buff negation may harm her ability to do so. Despite the fact that she does not negate effects that remove the Staff damage penalty, she can act as a decent Staff check on her Res stat alone.

Asset/Flaw and Skill Choices

Julia prefers +Atk to improve her firepower, or +Res to boost her bulk and Stat Ploy capabilities. She can get double attacks through Quick Riposte. She prefers -Def, as she does not need Def to check Dragons and Tomes. -Spd is also an option, as it increases the likelihood that she will be doubled and activate Iceberg in one round of combat.

Naga with the Effect refinement is the centerpiece of the set, providing her with the tools she needs to check most of the Res-targeting community. Note that the Close Counter effect, and the negation of foes’ skills that target the lower of her Def or Res, are only active against Dragons.

Her assist is flexible. I have personally have gotten good results out of Reposition, but other options such as Draw Back are workable as well.

Iceberg is a great pick for Julia, and will activate in one round of combat against foes who double her (which is a reasonably high number, she’s slow even with neutral Spd).

Julia can take any A Passive that boosts her stats, particularly her Res and Atk. She makes good use of Atk/Res Solo, Atk/Res Bond, and Mirror Stance 3 are all very powerful options. Bonus Doubler can also grant her some Player Phase presence, but introduces some buff dependence, and has approximately the same Atk & Res benefit as the Solo or Bond skill. When used on a team where she receives significant Def bonuses (e.g. in Astra season, used with Naga), Close Foil pairs well with refined Naga, giving her full Close Counter, plus stat bonuses against physical foes.

Julia's B passive is ideally either Quick Riposte, Guard, or Dull Ranged. Quick Riposte grants her follow-up attacks on defense, and deserves a slot either here or as her Sacred Seal. Guard prevents enemies from charging their special up, and can reduce damage taken from enemies who double her (note that it is unnecessary with Mirror Stance 3). Dull Ranged or Lull Atk/Res will both improve her overall bulk. Dull Ranged is particularly useful for dealing with -blade tomes.

Ploys are viable picks for Julia’s C Passive slot, given her high Res. If a Ploy is not needed or desired, any field or combat buff will do nicely.

For her Sacred Seal, Julia should prioritize Quick Riposte if it was not taken as her B Passive. A Ploy skill, or a Stance skill (such as Fierce Stance) are also good picks if Quick Riposte is not needed here.

Other Options

  • Close Def and Distant Def are both good EP stat boosting options, but are not active at any combat range.
  • Null C-Disrupt allows Julia to counterattack Staff users that are using the Dazzling Staff skill or weapon refinement. Note, however, that Staff users tend to have high Res.
  • Fortress Res increases her magical bulk greatly, at the cost of some Atk. It is mostly useful for checking Dragons, as she will take less damage and still have good KO potential due to Naga’s Dragon effectiveness.
  • Moonbow is a solid special choice to deal with high-Res foes that do not double Julia, if the user is not expecting her to be doubled (for whatever reason).

Divine Naga (Debuff support, Player or Enemy Phase focus depending on skill choices)

Spoiler

Usage intention: General use. Player Phase Focus strongly recommended.

Asset/Flaw: +Atk or +Spd/-Def
Weapon: Divine Naga
    Weapon Refinement: Effect
Assist: Flexible
Special: Glacies or Dragon Fang
A Passive: Fury 3, Bonus Doubler, or various mage-checking options (more details below)
B Passive: Desperation 3, or Flexible
C Passive: [Stat] Ploy 3, or Flexible
Sacred Seal: [Stat] Ploy, or Flexible

Overview

This set utilizes her high Res stat to ploy enemies. Divine Naga enables her to counter blue breath users, and check -blade mages and non-blue breath users. After a couple rounds of combat, she can activate a 4-charge special to decimate a large percentage of the cast. This set can be used either offensively or defensively. I would note that tome-checking is a very niche option, and personally recommend going with a more offense-focused set to open up her combat options and fully make use of Divine Naga’s combat buffs and field buff negation.

Asset/Flaw and Skill Choices

Julia can take +Atk to net more OHKOs, or +Spd to help salvage her Spd stat. 30 Spd is still low, but can be patched up with a bit of support, especially if Spd Ploy is used as her C Passive. My personal preference is +Spd, as her neutral Atk stat is sufficient in most cases. -Def is her preferred bane, so as to not sacrifice her more important Res (ploys, magical bulk) or HP (magical bulk).

Divine Naga with the Effect refinement is the centerpiece of the set, providing her with a myriad of powerful bonuses. The buff negation allows her to take field buffs (most notably, Spd buffs) and deny them to her enemies, increasing her doubling capabilities and making her a natural -blade tome check. Dragon effectiveness and negating all effects that target the lower of her Def/Res (unlike Naga, Divine Naga does not specify that this effect is only active against dragons) makes her a powerful dragon check. Finally, a built-in +3/3/3/3 combat buff when she has 3+ Res over her opponent further solidifies her general combat capabilities (note that the Res comparison takes place at the beginning of combat, so only her base Res, and field buffs and debuffs are counted; combat buffs like Brazen Atk/Res are not).

Her assist is flexible. I have personally have gotten good results out of Reposition, but other options such as Draw Back are workable as well.

The choice between Glacies and Dragon Fang depends on the user's choice for Julia's asset and A Passive, and what kind of stat-boosting support she receives from her teammates. Julia should use whichever deals more damage based on these factors. Both hit incredibly hard, allowing her to knock out a significant amount of enemies (even red ones).

The primary A Passive choices for this set are Fury, Bonus Doubler, Distant Def, and Mirror Stance. Details on these choices are as follows:

  • Fury offers an all-around stat boost; the flat +3 Res notably increases her Ploy capabilities, and the likelihood that she will receive the +3/3/3/3 Combat Buff from Divine Naga.
  • Bonus Doubler is a powerful option for both phases. It complements Divine Naga, allowing Julia to double her own field buffs and negate the enemy’s. However, it leaves her open to buff negation or reversal effects, and does not help her Ploy or secure Divine Naga’s combat buffs.
  • Distant Def and Mirror Stance are mage-checking options. Other suitable options for this role are Atk/Res Bond and Atk/Res Solo.

Julia's B passive should be Desperation on an offense set, especially since the primary offense A Passive, Fury, eats at her HP after every fight. Defense focused Julias have more flexibility, and can be used to make her a dedicated check for a certain type of enemy. Quick Riposte is her best multi-purpose defensive choice, but other defensive options like Guard, or debuff options like Chills, are viable.

Her C Passive should be a Ploy, and depends on the user's preferences. Res Ploy increases her OHKO capabilities against blue foes, though +Spd variants may need a little bit of Atk-boosting support to seal the deal. Spd Ploy helps her allies (or her) double the affected enemies. If no Ploy fodder is available, her C Passive slot is flexible. I would recommend a Hone, Fortify, or Drive in this case.

Her seal slot is ideally devoted to one of the following:

  • A [Stat] Ploy skill, to improve her debuff/support utility.
  • Atk/Spd and Darting Blow will give her a better offensive presence.
  • Quick Riposte and Distant Def are good picks for a defensive set.

Other Options

  • Moonbow, Iceberg or Draconic Aura can also be considered for her special, if the user prefers to give up some power for a shorter charge time.
  • Death Blow is serviceable for +Atk Julias looking to check dragons.
  • Triangle Adept pairs well with her high Atk stat to allow her to act as a check for blue foes, but is generally unnecessary.

Budget (see also: related comment)

Spoiler

Usage intention: General use.

Asset/Flaw: +Atk or +Spd preferred
Weapon: Divine Naga or Naga
    Weapon Refinement: N/A
Assist: Flexible
Special: Dragon Fang or Glacies
A Passive: Death Blow 3, Darting Blow 3, Fury 3, or Resistance +3
B Passive: Flexible, see notable options below
C Passive: Breath of Life 3, Hone [Stat] 3, Fortify [Stat] 3, or Drive [Stat] 2
Sacred Seal: Flexible, see notable options below

Overview

This low-investment set will not provide as much support to her teammates, but is still a valuable addition to any team requiring a green magical nuke.

Asset/Flaw & Skill Choices

Julia strongly prefers +Atk or +Spd to help with her KO power, and can take anything else as a bane. -Def or -HP are safer to take if the user wants her to fulfill a mage-checking role.

Her default Naga tome is serviceable if the user is not willing to expend the Divine Dew to evolve it into Divine Naga. However, the latter is superior in most cases due to its ability to negate enemy buffs.

There is a lot of flexibility in her assist slot. It's hard to go wrong with a positioning assist such as Reposition or Draw Back, but she can also run buffing options such as dual rallies, if needed.

The choice between Glacies and Dragon Fang depends on the user's choice for Julia's boon and A Passive, and what kind of stat-boosting support she receives from her teammates. Julia should use whichever deals more damage based on these factors. Both hit incredibly hard, allowing her to knock out a significant amount of enemies (even red ones).

For Julia's A Passive, Death Blow is a solid choice for a Player Phase set to boost her OHKO power. Darting Blow allows her to run a Spd-stacking set to net doubles, especially with +Spd and buff/drive support from allies (note, however, that this is shaky against enemies who stack Spd through skills). Fury provides an all-around stat boost for both Player Phase and Enemy Phase performance, and can help her Ploy enemies if a Ploy is selected as her Sacred Seal. Her default Resistance +3 is also a serviceable option for mage-checking, with Distant Def off of the table for a budget set.

Julia's notable B Passive options are:

  • Quick Riposte 2/3: This gives her guaranteed double attacks on the enemy phase, and is best combined with Resistance +3 A Passive to make her an all-around mage check.
  • -breaker 3 (usually G Tome-, Lance-, or Bow-): A -breaker allows her to focus on checking a specific weapon type, which can be useful for Arena Assault, or if a team only needs her to be able to check that weapon type.
  • Desperation 3: This is useful for a Spd-stacking set. It can also be used for a Brash Assault/Desperation set, especially in combination with Fury.

With Ploys off the table (at the time of writing), Julia should use either her natural Breath of Life, or a buff/aura skill to support her teammates. Drive Spd is a very solid pick for most team comps.

Julia's notable Sacred Seal options are:

  • Attack + or Speed +: These options help her net KOs. Speed + is especially important for users opting to use a Spd-stack set.
  • Distant Def: This helps her fulfill a mage checking role, and is best combined with Resistance +3 (A Passive) and Quick Riposte (B Passive)
  • Brash Assault: This seal should only be used with Desperation as a B Passive. It's gimmicky, but it can get the job done, and can additionally break Wary Fighter on armors that can counter at 2 range if she has the Spd to double naturally.
  • Atk Ploy: This allows her to provide a bit of Ploy support for her allies. It helps her survive counterattacks against physical units with Distant Counter, and can help allies with Heavy Blade ensure that they receive the +1 cooldown charge rate (especially Slaying+Desperation+Heavy Blade+Galeforce sets that need to avoid having so much Atk that they OHKO their opponent).
  • Res Ploy: This allows her to provide Ploy support for her magical allies, and additionally increases her own KO power.

One thing that bothers me with your build are the combination of the passives. Fury does not work well with any of the suggested B passives since they all require you to have a certain amount of HP. This is especially true for Quick Riposte or Guard giving them only a single use at most.

Julia's biggest niche besides being a Dragon Slayer is battling mages since she shuts down buffs which in turn makes -blade tomes more manageable to engage. I think Distant Defense deserves a mention somewhere for an enemy phase build, since it synergizes very well with the mentioned B passives, keeping her HP high for prolonged combat.

HP threshold does not matter since Arena battles go by so quickly and Julia is unlikely to face more than one opponent per map. The only reason for a general purpose Enemy Phase unit to not run Fury (Steady Breath, Distant Counter, or Close Counter) is if the player likes to drag out battles with pure walls and eschews Player Phase nukes.

I highly advise against prioritizing sustainability over kill count since eliminating threats as soon as possible is generally much safer and easier in my opinion. Many players think otherwise, so it is ultimately down to your play style and what you are comfortable with.

If you are worried about Julia handling more than one opponent, she can run Distant Def, but she may miss out on some kills.

You're assuming that you always have that option to get a jump on your opponent which is a dangerous mindset for Arena. There are plenty of things that can screw your opportunity for a sweep like map design, odd sets or mono compositions.
Not to mention baiting the likes of Reinhardt into Julia is more than viable in Arena and punishes hyperoffensive builds like the ones you suggest.

Fury only allows her to tank once and counterkill with her B passive, then ... what? She has trouble to 1-shot units and she needs a -breaker, Quick Riposte or a charged Special to reliably finish an opponent and Fury locks you out from 2 of these options. Even TA is more reliable to secure kills against blues that are not Reinhardt.
Guard makes no sense with Fury since she kills Reinhardt regardless with Divine Naga and it is clearly a skill meant to sustain her longer during a battle.

Not to mention Fury isn't as useful for Julia compared to other units. Julia's Spd is pretty terrible by today standards and the Def boost is nigh useless for her (with very very few exceptions). So she only profits from Atk and Res alone and there are plenty of skills that can provide higher benefits (Death Blow, Distant Defense or even Atk Res Bond).

Julia doesn't miss too many significant kills without Fury and she can comfortably run Quick Riposte with Distant Defense which is more obviously more suited for general purpose than specialization through -breaker skills. Considering she and her mother are the best mage counters in the game this is a very viable set and probably more suited than some kind of Fury variant.

@Zeratul I will agree that Distant Def and mage-checking in general deserves a mention. Additionally, I acknowledge that my perspective is colored by my personal use case for Julia. So feedback like this is very helpful.

Looking over things, I am fine with un-bolding Fury in the write-up and leaving specific notes about its use. I am not convinced that it's worth removing entirely, or that Julia can't make use of it. Particularly, it simultaneously boosts both of her offensive stats and increases her ploy potential, which no other A passive will do. I agree, however, that it is not ideal for a defense-oriented setup. This oversight is due to the fact that I primarily use Julia in an offensive role (unless Reinhardt is involved; then I take my Glacies charge and enjoy the free win), which Fury is a solid pick for (as described in the original iteration of the write-up).

In my personal experience, I have not noticed that she has much trouble netting blue OHKOs outside of lance armors (particularly, Berkut's Lance users) and high-Res mages on defense tiles. I think it's worth noting that the aforementioned lance armors commonly carry Distant Counter, and are likely to take Julia out of the QR and Lancebreaker thresholds regardless of what her A Passive is.

I would have expected you to add TA as an option for the build. She basically functions like a green Sanaki with TA.

I'll add it as a consideration. I did not initially include it because it only helps her against blues (which she already has reasonably good KO power over before TA), and reduces her ability to drop Glacies on reds for OHKOs. Given that some people might be looking for someone to only deal with blues, and the Glacies-on-reds thing is situational, I will admit that my original thinking was not justification to exclude it entirely.

Nah, I wasn't advocating that.
It just rubbed me the wrong way that Fury 3 was higlighted while all these B passives weren't really great with.

Question is what kind of Blue unit are common for you. Aside from Reinhardts everywhere other Blue units I consistently encounter are both variants of Effie and Fjorm which can shrug off Julia. Some dedicated builds like Berkut Lance Armors are also capable of avoiding the OHKO from her which pop up in Arena Assault. I mean she can kill Reinhardt and mages but that's what's she's supposed to do (though plenty of times high enough merges or DD seal on Fury Linde made offensive Julia ineffective).

I've been using Julia on my main team since she was released so I figured I'd throw in my two cents just in case someone who recently pulled her checks out this thread.

This is the build I for the most part used since the beginning of the game.

Spoiler

Used for: Literally everything

Preferred Nature: +Atk (Anything will work, but +Atk is imo the best)
Weapon: Naga
Assist: Swap (Flexible)
Special: Moonbow
A Passive: Fury 3
B Passive: Green Tomebreaker 3/Quick Reposte 2
C Passive: Breath of Life 3 (Flexible)
Sacred Seal: Atk+/Distant Defense (Flexible)

This build isn't perfect, but it's relatively cheap in terms of both SP and units you have to give up. Many of you won't want to spend the feathers to give her Quick Reposte 3, and it probably isn't worth it. She does fine with QR2, I never even gave her QR3 and she is my favorite unit to use. Swap is what I used on the Assist slot, really anything will work, but Swap is nice because it allows her to retreat and replace herself with a tank, and unlike Reposition, it can be used in cube formation for making sure you are buffing the correct units. I left Breath of Life 3 on her because she comes with it and slot C isn't as important for her, as she is primarily a nuker and not a buffer.

How this build works is by relying on Julia's inherently high attack stat. Unlike Nino, she is relatively slow and can't double. That is why I initially put QR on her, so that I could use her as a mage baiter with her naturally high res. The first Julia I built was +Atk -Res, and even then she would take 0 damage from Reinhardt with a res buff, and the only non red mages that she ever has a problem with are Nino and Linde. At the beginning of the game Nino was incredibly common in arena which was why she needed G Tomebreaker. Lastly, her weapon does come with built in distant defense, but if you want to refine it then throwing the distant defense seal on her will give her the benefits of both her unrefined and refined weapons.

The main units she will have problems with when running this build include Hector and Linde. Hector's counter makes it almost impossible to beat him if her special isn't charged.  Effie has so much HP that is usually hard to kill her in one shot, but with a dance or a 1 turn retreat she is relatively easy to deal with. People above mentioned that Fjorm doesn't have a problem against her, I have not ran into a Fjorm with her, but according to Kagero chart Fjorm will be left just short of dead. This is just a thing to watch out for, Julia's low tier speed makes doubling nearly impossible, which is why she has a problem with these tankier blues.

This build is great if you don't have a lot of fodder or SP to work with. However if you are willing to sacrifice more, I would suggest using the second build I have below. This build works for pretty much any situation, but it doesn't unlock her true potential.

My new build.

Spoiler

Used for: Arena focused, but can be used anywhere.

Preferred Nature: +Atk or +Spd
Weapon: Naga
Assist: Swap (Flexible)
Special: Iceberg
A Passive: Darting Blow 3
B Passive: Desperation 3
C Passive: Hone Speed (Flexible)
Sacred Seal: Speed +2

The biggest issue with Julia is her lack of speed which makes doubling impossible. But with a little effort and the right team, her speed can actually get in doubling range. For transparency's sake, my Julia is +Atk -HP and merged to +2. However, I will be measuring battles assuming that you don't have a merged Julia. This build will only work if you have the correct team synergy and take advantage of supports. With neutral speed, Julia can get up to 36 speed before Darting Blow is factored in. Speed seal + summoner support + ally support + hone speed. With this setup she can reliably double almost any unit in the game, and considering the faster units are usually red swords, the few that she can't double are mostly not a problem. Now maybe its a little unrealistic to give her summoner support just so that she can double, and maybe like me you only have Speed +2 and not Speed +3. That still gets her to a respectable 33 speed, which becomes 39 if you initiate the attack. This still allows her to double the majority of her usual enemies.

The problem opponents from before, Hector, Linde, Effie, and Fjorm, haven't been completely solved. Ice mirror allows Fjorm to tank the second attack. If Hector is +Atk or if your Julia is -HP or -Def then Hector will one shot her before she has the chance to finish him off with her second attack. If she's already damaged enough to be in Desperation range then this isn't a problem. If she is still at full HP, then this can be solved by buffing her with Fortify Defense. Even Fortify Defense 1 will work for this, so instead of wasting the C slot you can just use the seal. An issue you can run into is if Hector is +Atk (or has the attack +3 seal) and your Julia is either -HP or -Def. In this case Julia can only survive if she has a Fortify Defense 3 buff and either a summoner support of ally support (ally must be next to her) of B or higher. A quick note, Iceberg will one shot +Atk Hector if your Julia is +Atk and you have Hone Atk 3 on Julia, no supports necessary. If that's the case the her being -HP or -Def won't matter. Effie is a problem if Iceberg isn't ready, as Wary Fighter will prevent you from getting the kill. Iceberg will automatically kill Effie with no buffs or supports, unless Effie is +Res or +HP, or if your Julia is -Atk. If the issue is only one of these two, Hone Atk 3 will fix it. Neutral Linde unfortunately survives with 3 HP remaining, as Julia can't quite double her. Hone Atk 3 will also fix this, but be way of a +Res or +HP Linde, or of course, if your Julia is -Atk it won't work. Brave Ike is also a bit of an issue now, as the second attack being reduced by 80% of its damage will allow him to survive unless you have S summoner support, at least B ally support, Hone Atk 3, and a +Atk Julia. Of course if Brave Ike is +HP or +Res then it won't work at all unless Iceberg is procced. Iceberg will oneshot Brave Ike no matter the iv's and without any stat boosts.

This build overall relies on giving Julia the power to double, allowing her insane Attack to obliterate her opponents. The drawback is that it is incredibly hyperoffensive. While she can still tank Reinhardt and most other mages, I would be wary of using her in enemy phase as a baiter like the previous build was good for.

One last thing, Julia's high res makes ploys a great option. I don't have an abundance of ploy fodder so unfortunately I haven't been able to test it, although theoretically they would work great on her.

@immatx Sorry for the late reply on this one. I'll look into setting up a budget build with some of those options outlined...the write-up could use one.

Confirming that they work well, as someone running double-Ploy (Spd and Atk) on her...yeah, I sacrificed a Deirdre for her.

Edit: Budget set is up. I'm definitely open to feedback and other options, I only did cursory matchup analysis for it.

Threw in a Naga build, and regeared the “Ploy and Destroy” set so that it focuses on Divine Naga (particularly its offensive capabilities, to distinguish it a bit from Naga’s relative EP dominance).

I uh...didn’t run any actual numbers on Naga, but it seems straightforward enough: amp up her Atk and Res and put her in front of magical enemies. Maybe I’ll finally finish reworking my simulator sometime.

Feedback is welcome.

Refined Naga does not negate Wrathful Staff. It's a translation error (someone just hit copy and paste from Mystic Boost), but all of Naga's unique refine effects are only active against dragons, and dragons can't equip staff weapon skills anyways.

Adjusted the write-up, thanks!

I was wondering about that wording, but got conflicting messages about it in the General thread (and I went with the Divine Naga refinement, myself).

I guess it’s not a huge deal, her Res is pretty solid anyway.
