Background:

Spoiler

You know him even if you have never played an Achanean game before: Cain is half of the Cain and Abel archetype that many other units find themselves based off of. Sain and Kent, Sully and Stahl, Forde and Kyle, there is someone in each game that can find their roots in this pair of Cavaliers with unyielding loyalty to Altea. Cain himself represents the hotheaded Red-clad half of the archetype.

Stats and Default kit:

Spoiler

Note that Cain gains +4 to Defense if that is taken as his Boon, increasing his final Stat Total

Passive CThreaten Atk 3 (Inflicts Attack -5 on all foes within 2 spaces of this unit at the start of this units phase)

Unit analysis:

Spoiler

Cain is neither the best nor the worst Sword Cavalry. His stat spread is nothing special, boasting average Attack and Speed, average Defense, and fairly standard HP. His Resistance is his worst stat, so he will not be able to take magical hits very well, making him vulnerable to Blue Mages and Wolf tomes, though it does give him a stat to easily accept as his bane.

In terms of availability, he is average there as well, being available at 4* and 5*. When not being used as a unit, he will most likely be used as Wings of Mercy 3 or Brave Sword+ Fodder. He isn't exactly RARE, but he still finds himself in the hands of many players, especially as a Pity Breaker.

Compared to other Sword Cavs, he is inferior to Siegbert (who has higher Attack, Speed, and Defense, the same HP, and less Resistance (which already doesn't matter on him), as well as sporting a Unique Weapon that has Swift Sparrow 2 built into it) and Brave Roy (who is faster and sporting a unique weapon with built in Attack +3 and Heavy Blade 3), weaker as a Brave Sword+ user compared to Luke (whose stats are more built for such), and doesn't have the same bulk that Xander, Seth, and Sigurd do. He also doesn't have the same availability as Eliwood and Stahl, who while slightly inferior to Cain are more likely to be in someones army.

While inferior in these ways, Cain does have the benefit of being a Cavalry unit, which gives him +6 to all stats so long as he stands next to someone with Hone/Fortify Cavalry. Because of his fairly average stat spread, he can be improved upon quite a bit as well because of Cavalry buffs. Without any specific niche to fulfill, he is allowed to run most whatever set he wishes to run that doesn't require a Unique Weapon, which lets other units fulfill what they want to do without sacrificing anything.

Example Sets:

Spoiler

As a general rule, because Cain is a Cavalry unit, he would typically want to run Cavalry buffs for his C skill, but in times where he can't be on a Cavalry team he is usually okay with whatever the player needs on him.

Chinashop's Bull (Firesweep):

Spoiler

+Spd -Res

  • Wep: Firesweep Sword+
  • Assist: Reposition
  • Special: Luna
  • Passive A: Life and Death 3
  • Passive B: Drag Back/Hit and Run/Flexible
  • Passive C: Flexible (Fortify/Ward Cavalry recommended)
  • Sacred Seal: Speed+

While there is faster and stronger, Cain has the odd advantage of not having a distinct playstyle he would be abandoning for a Firesweep set. This set excels on Horse Emblem, where he can hit 49-53 Speed with just his skills and Hone Cavalry, outpacing most all units.

For his B skill, Drag Back and Hit and Run can retrieve Cain safely from whatever battle he just took part in, but for other B skills, Swordbreaker lets him double against the exceedingly fast Ayra or Mia as well as other fast Sword users. Wings of Mercy 3 can let Cain pick off enemy units that mages failed to kill safely, as there will be no risk of triggering Vantage-charged skills. Escape Route requires Cain take a hit to trigger, but will also let him get around the entire map swiftly. In emergencies, Cain can also run Bowbreaker 3 to outpace Brave Lyn or Bride Cordelia.

Explaining the recommendation of his C passive, because he is using a Firesweep weapon, any defensive buffs are more or less wasted on him, as he doesn't want to be taking hits in the first place with his meager defense and nonexistent resistance. As such, he should be giving these defensive benefits to his teammates that CAN take advantage of such.

Rushing Bull (Wo Dao):

Spoiler

+Spd -Res

  • Wep: Wo Dao+
  • Assist: Reposition
  • Special: Moonbow
  • Passive A: Fury 3
  • Passive B: Swordbreaker 3 / Desperation 3
  • Passive C: Flexible
  • Sacred Seal: Flexible

Steady Bull:

Spoiler

+Def -Res

  • Wep: Slaying Edge+
  • Assist: Flexible
  • Special: Bonfire
  • Passive A: Steady Breath
  • Passive B: Quick Riposte 3
  • Passive C: Flexible
  • Sacred Seal: Defense+/Close Defense/Attack+

This set is enhanced by Fortify Cavalry and lets Cain act as a sort of wall for his teammates, albeit he is not as good as other Sword Cavs and merely takes advantage of his Boon placing him above 150 BST.

Brave Adept:

Spoiler

+Spd -Res

  • Wep: Brave Sword+
  • Assist: flexible
  • Special: Luna
  • Passive A: Triangle Adept 3
  • Passive B: Axebreaker 3
  • Passive C: Flexible
  • Sacred Seal: Attack+

(largely based on a personal set that my own Cain has run for months, closing in on a year)

Cain does not have the raw power that Luke does, but he can still run with his default Brave Sword+ and become the bane of all Greens.

With TA3, one of Cains attacks becomes a technical 56 power before any buffs are applied, which for most Greens will spell doom in just two hits. For the bulkier Greens like Beruka or Hector, Axebreaker 3 will allow Cain to double them and usually finish them off (and in some cases disable their own Counterattack) once he has Cavalry buffs applied.

For his C Passive, one of two things can be done. First off, he can run standard Horse Emblem buffs. Second off, because he has TA3 he can usually take at least a few attacks from green units, so he can also run Threaten Defense 3 to soften them up before tearing them apart.

Budget Brave set:

Spoiler

+Atk -Res

  • Wep: Brave Sword+
  • Assist: Reposition
  • Special: Escutcheon
  • Passive A: Death Blow 3/Attack +3
  • Passive B: Wings of Mercy 3
  • Passive C: Threaten Atk 3/Flexible
  • Sacred Seal: Attack+

Cain's default kit, while not amazing, does have a nice combo in Brave Weapon + Escutcheon, which reduces the damage he takes from unit counterattacks, and will automatically be at full charge by the time the enemy is allowed to counterattack, if at all.

Death Blow 3 would be preferred as his A passive, but because the skill is so rare compared to other Blow skills, Attack +3 can fulfill your needs just fine.

Wings of Mercy enables Cain to either finish off any units his teammates couldn't on their own, or lets him get in after they do their job and get them out of danger. This skill might not be necessary on a Cavalry unit, but it helps on heavily forested maps where Cavalry movement is restricted.

(I will try to work on this in the future if there is anything to add)
