Berwick Saga Translation (Finished, v2.3) - Updated 23 Jan 2021

Thanks for the update Aethin! You are beast for putting in this work. And I agree with the sentiment on the board - take your time and finish at a pace you're comfortable with. Nobody's paying you for this, so I think everyone would rather see a product put out that you're happy with than a burnt out Aethin.

Ah, complaints about hit rates... heheh, takes me back to the XCOM boards (I missed a 99% chance! How? I made it the other 99 times!)

I feel the need to weigh in on this. The thing to remember is that you're attacking. A lot. And you're hitting. A lot. And it never seems worthwhile to note when it goes your way. If you attack with a 70% hit chance and score a hit twice you probably don't think anything of it, but that wasn't the likely outcome (49%). Hitting three of those in a row is a 1 in 3 chance, but you still probably don't think anything of it. You certainly don't say "I hit three 70%s in a row, these percentages are bull****!" But those are about the odds of you missing a 70% chance. And I'll bet you remember that (probably because the results of that miss were more consequential than the time you hit three 70%s in a row).

Part of this is the way the human brain is set up. We're programmed to remember and learn through failure more than success.

You want a really easy way to discover this? Start a weekly poker game with your friends. After a few sessions your friends will be bitterly complaining about the hands you won when a lucky card comes up - and you won't remember it at all. But you'll remember every single game you lost when an unlucky card took you down (and your friends won't!).

The example given earlier was missing a 92% and an enemy hitting a 23%. Statistically, that is about a 2% chance. That means if you attack an enemy with those odds 100 times you're likely to see that twice. And maybe those two were the first two times it happened! And maybe you actually get that bad outcome 5 times in a row! There's a percentage for that happening too (math is hard)! Basically, if you sit around rolling dice long enough you'll see some strange outcomes. And that's what these encounters between your units and enemies are - rolling dice dozens of times each level behind all the animations.

If this sounds like the kind of number theory that would appeal to a gambler, well, yes. That's what it is. That's the appeal of these games, whether you know it or not. This isn't like chess, where the right piece in the right place means a specific outcome. Games like this are about maximizing the percentage of success and minimizing the percentage of failureThat is the entirety of the strategy taking place. Nothing is guaranteed. No matter who plays this game, they will see spectacular victories and absurd defeats. It's going to happen. It'll be with different characters, in different scenarios, but everyone will experience it. The fun comes from looking at a scenario full of percentages stacked against you, then making decisions that begin to push the numbers your way. Then rolling the dice.

(You could argue that's what commanders in actual war are doing too)

And hey, that's not for everybody. Some people will find that stressful and unenjoyable. I mean, there's nothing you can do to guarantee success. And that's fine, these games aren't for everyone. But let's get it out in the open what's going on under the hood. And know that some people love it.

Modern war is of course more complex with more factors involved, but even guided missile systems and computerized fire control for cannons have a first hit probability attached to them. Usually the threshold that modern militaries try to reach is 80%. And just like in Berwick, this chance is modified by the target profile, the exact weapon being used and environment (plus whatever else might be relevant, like jamming).

There are other things you can do in Berwick to manage threats, like making extensive use of guard and provoke (they're extremely useful on escort missions, for example).

Are you me? This is me down to a t. All three paragraphs of this.

Allow me to quote the man himself. This is from the FAQ in the OP.

So yeah, sadly, the only way you can help him is by letting him know how awesome he is.

Also, if you run into any issues, be it glitches, typos or anything else related to the translation, I encourage you (and everyone else reading this, for that matter) to PM Aethin and send him a screenshot. He has volunteers (myself included) that test the patches before he posts them, so the versions he releases to the public should be mostly clean, but we're only human - we're liable to miss things here and there.

I have no idea, honestly. I never attacked the upper ballista. Didn't even have time to try Barnhardt, Vester just ran in there and the map ended.

Nah, he's from good ol' 'Murica. Pretty sure the guten tag was just a joke. Referring to his FAQ again, he says he's from Minnesota.

Thanks for non-aggressively answering my questions even though I could've researched even the tiniest bit and found it myself. I was just so hyped that I forgot myself 😄

Damn, that's too bad, I would've liked to donate to him, but I get his stance on the topic. Still, I never would've been able to play the game otherwise which would have been such a shame, because I'm already 40 hours into my second playthrough with a very different roster and I'm still loving my time with the game.

Thanks for the advice, although I didn't really have a problem with the map itself, I was just curious about the hit rate issue. After reloading in a few other scenarios I now have the feeling that sometimes the game prerolls the outcome of the next battle and sometimes it doesn't.. now I'm confused.

About Czene: I'm in my 2nd playthrough after spoiling some promotion requirements I couldn't get in my 1st and holy hell, does Czene get better with her promotion..

Each one has their own style. For me Czene is one of the most important character because I like to capture enemy for their items. I'm even entered crazy mode and used Czene to mug/capture all items of Zephyros's dragon knight squad 😂

Wow, this thread has blown up a bit since I came back to life! Glad to have people talking more about the game.

And with that, I have more good news to share! Since quite a number of Map 12-1 events were already done (thanks, past Aethin), I'm able to get that map out now, too! Enjoy version 43!

Hey Aethin,

wanted to thank you again for the new translation, great stuff! Just a quick question about your remaining workload: For the last three chapters, you need to to translation AND implementation, right?
You don't have the the translation already done and just need to implement it, right? In that case, I would have loved to get the script just to keep on playing instead of waiting.

Anyway, much success to you and happy new year!

Thank you! Happy new year to you too!

Yes, you’re right—the translation isn’t done yet in any form. (When I translate, I edit the game’s script files themselves so they can be put right back in the game, so no middle steps required.)

Now that Vestaria Saga is out, I’ve got to remain relevant somehow 😄

Nice to see it's still being worked on! I don't really care how long it will take, i'm just glad if it gets finished some day. You are truly honorable for making this game more accessible to a lot of players.

Hello, you guys! What's better than one Berwick chapter...?

Spoiler

count.jpg.86aa4d69335fb349e8231abd2d4464ac.jpg

...Two Berwick Chapters! Ah-ah-ah!

Here's version 46, which covers both Ch. 13 and Ch. 14! Since the plot is on the home stretch by this point, there are no side missions left, hence why I've been able to get these out faster than usual.

We're so close to the end! Thank you all for sticking with me so long!

It's amazing how quickly your wrapping up the final chapters, thanks so much Aethin!  I've been using an old patch, version 28 I think, for my last few playthroughs so I'm excited to see how closely my impression of the second half of the story from the untranslated version matches up with the actual plot!

I'm afraid I don't have an update for you guys just yet, but I hope you can get a little bit of comfort in knowing that it's still coming along nicely.

Ohhhh, so that's why... I was wondering why it was taking you so long to release the final chapter, compared to the previous ones. I see now, you want to release both the final chapter and the epilogue at the same time! Probably a good call, but... (SPOILERS)

Damn it I want to kill Volcens already why must you subject me to this torturous wait

All jokes aside, and as always, take as much time as you need. We've survived this long, we can wait a few more weeks. And then, it's full Berwick time! I can hardly wait!

Take as long as you need, I'm waiting to get a new laptop before I download Berwick Saga. My current one can get hot running SNES/PS1/DS FE games as is, so jumping a major console generation makes me concerned what this old thang can handle. Take a few months to finish the translation, and go ahead and rewrite all the text so it forms Onegin stanzas afterwards.
