Here's the thing: Alcohol & smoking hurt the person who uses them, and not others (there's an arguement to be mafe for passive smoking, but there are enough non-smoking zones today. I avoid places full of smoke for example). It's in the hand of every person if they want to drink/smoke or not.

However i can't stop someone else from shotting someoneĀ if they wanted.

Not to mention smoking & Alcohol are for pleasure, while guns are mainly for killing.

Two words: Drunk driving.

Guns can also be used for hunting (whether it be for sport or sustenance) or pleasure (shooting range).

This from someone who doesn't care about the gun debate, since I don't live in a place where a gun is a tool (see: places where response times are bad).

Inspired by Christchurch and El Paso shooters. You won't stop seeing that anytime soon folks. They no longer see Trump as the savior they thought he could be so this would be their way of taking "matters into their own hands".

Add three more to that too: Second-hand smoke.

A smoker's cigarette smoke can most certainly harm someone else if that person breathes it in. I don't want to breathe in that crap.

But they usually aren't.

The most common use for guns is killing people. I don't understand why that's so difficult for anyone to understand. You don't see arms manufacturers marketing their wares on hunting or target shooting, its on how quickly you can turn a school into into a charnel house. The fact that we regulate alcohol and vehicle operations to minimize instances of drunk driving only strengthens the argument for gun laws: because of the damage this shit causes when it's unregulated at a federal level.

Well that propably depends on what guns you're talking about. Like actual hunting rifles are almost certainly are used mor widely to kill quarry than humans, while handguns and uzis and the like killing a non human animal is almost entirely unintentionally.

Okay but how is that relevant to all of the kids who were murdered in the recent Texas shooting? What point do you think you're making right now?

Oh no point. I'm fiercely anti gun. But it is also true that guns are indeed regularlyĀ used for hunting animals and that hunting rifles specifically will generally kill more animals than humans.

The most common uses for guns areĀ hunting,Ā pleasure, and self defense. Just because you hear more about mass shootings on the news does not mean that it is the only use for guns. Most people here in this forum are not against treating guns like alcohol and vehicles.

What I am against is banning guns. I do think there should be more regulation, but I am against bans in general. I do not mind background checks, higher taxes on licenses, requiring stricter documentation when making gun purchases, no gun zones, etc., but I am against more intrusive regulations like magazine capacity restrictions or banning handguns completely.

Self defense has always been a poor justification for owning a firearm. A house that has a firearm in it is actually less safe. Homicides, accidental deaths or suicides.

If people want to use them for hunting or for recreational purposes, at least there is no flimsy reasoning for that. But owning a gun for self defense is like taking Ivermectin for covid-19Ā and thinking you are safe.

Ā

Speak to any European socialist and they'll tell you that firearms just seem to get the proletariat murdered (or used in suicides, which is often understated)Ā in the US.Ā Leftists in the US are generally in favour of gun ownership even if they'll gesture at gun control. And yes, in that regard I am anti gun ownership, completely.

This shooting and the one at Sandy Hook remind of Dunblane - and how handguns were rather swiftly restricted for UK citizens shortly after, which was a better solution than anything I've seen the US come up in the past 30 years.

The problem is that a ban is simply unfeasible and so the discussion is not even worth having because there are more guns in circulation than people in the US, much less a majority of people wanting to give up their toys to possibly value human life.

Also, feeling you have to own a firearm is not exactly an indication of a stable society and if that's the case the US shouldn't consider themselves that far above less developed states in South America and Africa.

There are people who genuinely believe that. They seem to miss the implication that if it is literally true, then the only other explanation for the disproportionate number of shootings is that Americans are just inherently more evil than any other nationality in the world!
