Hey, here's an idea: What if Byleth was Byleth & Three Houses, and their gimmick is that you use your D Special to choose one of the three House leaders - Dimitri, Edelgard, or Claude - who becomes your partner for the rest of the battle? You don't get to switch to any of the three freely, you have to commit. If you choose Dimitri, then Dimitri is your alternate fighter for the rest of the battle, you won't be able to acces Edelgard or Claude. Or if they were to bring bring custom specials back, you'd choose which of the three House Leaders is your D Special "subfighter", a character you can switch to and play but who cannot be customized themselves. I thought of that convention for Young Link as well, choosing which transformation mask he uses as his D Special.

You've yet to explain how you intend to balance this so Byleth isn't completely broken? After all, you're effectively turning all matches against Byleth into a 2 vs. 1.

Balance? That's a thing in Smash Ultimate?

Joking aside, if it's a fun idea, I'm all for it. The game isnt balanced anyway, and never will be.

The same way you balance Zelda/Sheik and Pokemon Trainer? I'm not suggesting that they'd fight at the same time, only that you'd be able to switch to one of them. The catch being that once you choose one of them, you're stuck with that as your alternate for the rest of the battle. So if you pick Dimitri, you can switch between Byleth and Dimitri for that battle, but not Edelgard or Claude.

My alternate suggestion was that you choose which House Leader you can switch to with Custom Specials; the Leaders are thus "subfighters" who are fully playable but cannot be customized themselves. The same could work for Young Link and the Deku, Goron, and Zora Masks.

I know the Vol. 2 roster was already decided, but I’d like to ask something. If COVID-19 affects Vol. 2 in any way, do you think we’ll get the occasional Nintendo character OUTSIDE the pass while the Vol. 2 Challenger Packs are in development? As in, no specific stage for that outside character and MAYBE a bit of music?

That all still runs into the issue of needing to make four characters for the price tag of one.

Why would you think COVID would allow them the opportunity to increase development?

Pink spirits, eh? Holy carp, I just realized the base game doesn't have Ribbon or Adeleine Spirits. Which means A) Ribbon will probably be in this event or B) there is a chance, however slight, that she and/or Adeleine will be added to Smash as DLC. I could see them going the Star Allies route of making Ribbon part of Adeleine's moveset, but I'd like even more for Ribbon to be fully playable herself. Being that Ribbon is a counterpart of sorts to Kirby, I could totally see her gaining the ability to copy abilities similar to Kirby, perhaps using some kind of magic wand. She could also use copy abilities in Smash that Kirby doesn't, like Beam, Mirror, and Archer.

NINTENDO SHADOW DROPPED A DRIECT MINI ON US

And it was confirmed that FP6 would be from…ARMS?

They didn’t specify which one, though. I don’t think it’ll be Spring Man (even though he’s pictured above) since he’s an Assist Trophy. Still, it’s nice we’re getting more 1st party content just so the 3rd party purists can shut up.

The character from ARMS is due to arrive in June.

Considering they stated the character is a bit unusual I think it's very likely Spring Man is out.

Min Min won the popularity contest back in the early days so there's a very good chance it's her. If not, then Twintelle because she has become a lot more popular since. Ninjara and Byte & Bark would be cool picks too, but I'd prefer one of the girls.

Just... anyone but Spring Man. Dude's so generic it would be the most anti-hype reveal ever.

I'm sticking to my assertion that assist trophies won't be upgraded into full-fledged fighters so I think we can all forget about Spring Man this time around. Though most of the popular characters from ARMS are also already in the game as spirits so whoever it is that they pick is really anyone's guess. I know a lot of people give me grief when I say that spirit characters can't become fighters, but I'm choosing to remain consistent on that topic until proven otherwise.

I bought the original Wii version of Xenoblade Chronicles last year. Now I'm regretting that decision.

In all honestly, I'm most looking forward to Bravely Default 2.

The Isle of Armour Expansion for Pokémon Sword and Shield still doesn't make sense to me; shouldn't the Isle of Armour Legendary look more, I don't know, armoured? The Crown Tundra Legendary actually has a crown-like thing on its head; why doesn't the Isle of Armour Legendary have any armour? It would've been far more fitting for it look more like an armoured knight than a martial artist.

Not only that, but the Region is supposed to be based on the UK, right? Celtic Folklore is full of stories of warriors going to isles to seek out specialist training from former champions, so the Pokémon Trainer doing just that, but for Pokémon Battling, in the Isle of Armour expansion is actually very fitting. So, why does the island have a distinctly non-British aesthetic to it?

…This is a Smash news and discussion thread. I would like to kindly ask to post your opinions on the general news in another thread.

Oh I so want the ARMS character in Smash to be Ribbon Girl or Ninjara! Ribbon Girl is cute and she's the poster girl. Ninjara is my favorite character in the game. But I'm banking more on Ribbon Girl because of being female and the poster girl. The game still has far fewer female characters than male, even when counting the female versions of Robin, Corrin, Byleth, Wii Fit Trainer, and Villager.

My apologies; I had originally meant to discuss just the Smash news, but as I watched the direct, I just started typing. I'll post that stuff in another thread.

As for Smash Bros., I'm not particularly excited by the ARMS fighter announcement. It's not a game I was particularly interested in, so learning that a character from it is going to be a fighter in Smash Bros. is not particularly interesting.

I would be saying, "That's one fighter down, and five to go", but they haven't actually said who the fighter is, so it's technically still six fighters that have yet to be revealed.

I'm not too pleased with the next fighter being from ARMS. Why would Nintendo start their Fighters Pass Vol. 2 with a Nintendo character from a franchise that isn't even too popular? If you want to promote the Fighters Pass and get people to buy it then start with a big character like they did with Joker. This reveal is just weird (the "trailer" was so not hype) and isn't gonna please the fanbase after the big upset with Byleth. My only hope is that this character knocks the spirits deconfirm fighters theory out of the water. If it's Springman then Isaac has a chance!!!

I feel the first way. Actually, this is the only fighter reveal that effectively landed with a thud for me.

Even Terry Bogard, who I have no experience with and only knew on a name basis, impressed me more.

I don't see the problem with an ARMS representative. It isn't exactly the same as 'Plant, but there are many one-off/dead franchise 1st/2nd party characters in Smash, and provided this is the only one in the 2nd pass, it's not excessive to me. Add I dunno, Issac, and then it would be too much. Add Rex & Pyra, and ARMS is still fine. 1 ARMS, 1-2 1st party living franchise, and 2-3 3rd party additions sounds acceptable to me.

Though I don't have SmashU and don't have real desires towards almost anyone being added, so the big 3rd party paradise of which others dream every time they sleep is merely quaint to me.
