Not all escort missons are bad. I remember in Kingdom Hearts 2, where you had to escort Minnie at Disney Castle, and it was actually quite fun. I did help that Minnie could fight back, and she had a damn good attack.

Somehow I forgot about that one.

Good point.

Two words:

ESCORT MISSIONS

Nearly every time it's trying too guide the world's dumbest NPC away from death and it's always frustrating. Always.

I can't think of a single good one.

I can only count the amount of good ones on one hand:

  1. Crimson Skies (the only game that was actually praised for it's well done escort missions) because all of your targets can defend themselves (badly, in a good way) against attacks, can take a beating, and you have the ability to fly onto them and take control of the anti-aircraft guns they have. They're actually quite fun.
  2. Prince of Persia: Sand of Time, although this is through word-of-mouth as I haven't played the game.
  3. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, because the NPC moves is slow, and will attack anyone near, and you just have to defeat the boss to end the level instead of getting them to their destination.
  4. Personally, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but that's because I sniped every enemy with the bow every chance I got, so I made the level easier (and less of a headache) than intended.

Otherwise, I hate these with a passion, and am glad to see these are become rare.

Assassins creed had this incredibly annoying habit. Whenever you need to employ stealth which is most of the time you only had a single chance. If the enemy spotted you it was game over. You can't correct your mistake or flee the scene to try another time, its just game over if you're spotted. To be fair there is a very brief window to kill the guard but its so brief it might as well not be there.

But then you have that one boss in 7th Dragon III that i forget the name of but it has instant-death attacks that can't be avoided without equipping resisting items and even then, that's just a chance. The optional Avalanche Abassy superboss, the strongest superboss in Xenoblade 1 at Lv.120, has Instant-Death Spike Damage (Spike Damage is basically an automatic counter that some enemies have and sometimes it deals damage but other times it just hits you with a status effect but Avalanche Abassy is the only one with an instant-death version of it) and it's fucking bullshit because that means you have to equip Spike Defense Gems in addition to Accuracy Gems because Xenoblade 1 has this really dumb thing where your accuracy is nerfed if you're taking on enemies that are 6+ levels higher (the level cap in Xenoblade games is 99 unless it's Xenoblade X where it's 60. Thankfully, the accuracy nerf bullshit is only a thing in Xenoblade 1). And Monado Purge, the one attack capable of nullifying Spike Damage, is mostly useless since the Avalanche Abassy has a 70% Aura Seal resist rate.

I thought it was Divine Protection or Debuff Resist Gems that blocked AA's status spike? Blizzard Bzelgas and Ancient Daedala are who you need Spike Defense Gems for. And IRRC, the max on SD gems is 50% per gem, while Debuff Resist needs only 1 gem for 100% immunity, which isn't bad (Melia and Dunban have anti-Spike skills, but they cost a good deal of Affinity Coins and Melia's only adds 30% protection). Daedala reminds me that to get maxed Night Vision Gems, which will stop working if your current superboss battle goes into the day, you will need to kill Daedala multiple times. And I don't like having to farm superbosses or rare enemies to stand a chance against other superbosses- I'm never gonna touch you FFX postgame!

XCX actually requires a good bit of Augment (Gem) making for the postgame bosses, and you'll need to grind resources for making an Ares 90, the easiest way to handle the postgame (and even the Ares will need some good Augments- just far less than every other Skell and Ground Gear build). This owes something to XCX being a little more MMORPG in nature, where equip grinding for the postgame is I guess standard procedure. BLADE Tickets you can trade for any monster drop in the game helps, provided you have other players willing to help you fight the Global Menaces, since tackling the Global Nemesies by oneself is not easy (and they're pretty much gone from the game now with XCX's online dead- having more than just two GMs would be much appreciated in a port).

You just gave me flashbacks to those stupid chicken-things in Persona 5's second dungeon... *shudders* Those things were the bane of my existence.

Rule no. 1 of SMT, as soon as possible, get Tetraja, or better Death nulling armor as soon as possible for the MC. Mudo is ludo-crous (Hama is fortunately naturally nulled by MCs not wandering the Vortex World- that one sadly needs both Expel and Death null).

I consider Macca/Wastrel Beam worse though. Bye bye precious money! I had no chance of blocking your theft! And as rare as it is, why did someone invent a spell that reduces your level permanently?

And those SMT IV Fiend appearances I never bothered with because of how much luck you need to encounter each and every one of them. I could handle the Famed Fusion Accidents, but I drew the line there.

Was it? Either way, it's still a grind that you have to do. It's why i find XC2's Superbosses to be such a refreshing change of pace, because there's barely any grind needed apart from the grind to Lv.99, which isn't that hard to do (once you get into the Lv.85 or higher range, you can kill the giant squids for EXP that fly around Tantal's lower region during Ether Mist weather). Then there's insane things like taking down the Lv.130 Superboss at Lv.1 (which i would post a video of but it contains a spoiler) but the equipment grind there is still nothing compared to XC1 or X from what i hear. Like, all you really need is some strong Core Chips, a Burst Symbol to buff your Chain Attacks and a Revival Pod, which revives fallen party members upon activating a Chain Attack.

XCX's online system is still up to this day.  I just did some ticket runs and global nemesis battles with some mutuals and friends so no XCX's online isn't dead yet.

The only thing that got shut down was the annoying chat system or miiverse messages that goes around and constantly ask where's shulk in this game dailies.

In terms of gaming pet peeves...jrpg cutscenes that are constantly being barraged at you.  The pacing gets really bad for Xenoblade late game and Xenoblade 2 early game where it's nothing but cutscenes and I can't play game.  I've even checked the clock sometimes where it's like 30 mins of cutscenes and not once did I have the opportunity to touch the controller and the switch even went into sleep mode once in XC2.  At times like this...I really feel like I'm not playing a game anymore.  I might as well have been playing a VN or watching a movie.  I don't mind games where it has cutscenes...but when I have to constantly watch a cutscene than after it's done...I walk 5 seconds later and another cutscene starts right immediately....I get a bit....annoyed.

The thing is games like Mass effect which has tons of cutscenes I don't mind because I can actually interact and select dialogue choices of my own and make decisions that actually will impact the story and the branching paths.  I don't have that opportunity in most JRPGs and many of their choices either don't matter or maybe one of the many options that are available actually impact one thing.  At that point there's no point of making these dialogue choices other to make dumb witty comments from the characters that don't impact anything.

You know you can just flick the Joy-Con stick in any direction and it'll keep the system from falling into sleep mode, right? It doesn't interrupt the cutscene either, all it does is tell the Switch that you're still there.

Though yeah, XC2's cutscenes can get pretty damn long. Especially the long one in Ch.10. You know the one. Takahashi got a little bit overambitious again though that's just the kind of guy he is at the end of the day.

The thing is, unless you're playing a game like RE4 cutscene with QTE most people wouldn't touch their controller.  I am aware of flicking it around but it's a major pet peeve when the cutscenes goes on for too long for my taste.
