"Save your flirting for when this is over, Astrid. Much as I appreciate it, we'll have time when they're all dead... Most s-stunning, you said?" Misea tried not to get distracted, shaking their head, focusing back on the battle in front of them. The humans hadn't run off, so they were either going to turn on them, or fight with them... And as that Alex girl ran off to strike, it seemed they could rely on at least some of them.

Glendwr had taken dishonest jobs before, and usually kept to them even when the deception had inevitably revealed itself. This time, he probably would do no different, but this was probably the most harrowing fight he's had in years. Still, he couldn't let Mira get kidnapped by the bloodsuckers.

"Dammit... Mina, get back out of here. They're going to move faster than you expect, so stay further away than you think you need to." The others were all rushing over to the one side but with the fire between him and them, he wasn't going to be able to easily support them. "Dammit..." This one was more muttered but he quickly reloaded his revolver and moved to the side.

"So... stick with you then, you know what you're doing. Got it!" Things were a little ablur still, but there weren't any screams from people being wounded, so things had to be going at least a little alright. Mina pulled out her Lightning Tome, and rapidly flipped pages as she followed after the lanky youth, stopping about when he did, leaving her slightly behind and to the side of his position. Ah, yes, here it was. Starting the invocation, Wilhelmina began channeling magic, aiming it towards the same target.

"Misea... go help the two opposite the Princess. I'll make short work of Heathcliff's right hand and make sure Almira isn't in danger. I do believe she's growing fond of that boy, it would be a shame were harm to befall him." Astrid noted, hopefully Misea would be more receptive now that Heathcliff was dealt with. Either way, the Countess had a task to fulfill, so no time to dawdle. Putting the lance away in favour of a heftier axe, Astrid charged Heathcliff's Lieutenant, moving through the darkness like a pale streak beneath the light of the moon. Nights like this were always so energizing...

"Why hello, Luciel~ Will you fare better than Heathcliff, I wonder~?" Astrid gleefully wondered aloud, as she brought her axe down on the vampire harassing Almira.

"Arggh, damn it!" The wound wasn't anything too severe, but it had been enough to break his concentration. He was concerned at the lieutenant behind his attacker, but the lady in the tavern, who he now saw was probably another vampire, dealt with him. Now that they held the initiative, Glendwr backed up and pointed his revolver at his attacker. "You'll feel this one."

Glendwr backs up to 7,9 and fires again.

"... You're not to lay a finger on her, understand? I'm trusting you." Misea let Astrid run off, the ensuing screams meaning she was doing her job, at least. With a hefty sigh, Misea turned towards the others.

The loud report of Seph's gunshot caused Wilhelmina to flinch. Shutting her eyes and saying a quick prayer in her mind, she managed to regain focus, and successfully channeled enough energy to summon forth a ray of white light that flared up and arced to the target. There was a light hiss, like that of steam rising from wet garment laid out to dry by a fire, and the vampire turned toward her instead of the boy, its attention drawn quite successfully, whether that was her intention or not.

Suddenly, this seemed less and less like a good idea. Mina wasn't sure she'd actually done much more than make it mad, as at least visibly it seemed in as good of health as ever. Part of her badly wanted to ask if this was normal, well 'normal', but there was no time. Frantically backpedaling as it lunged at her, the teacher caught one heel on her other ankle, and tumbling backwards landed rather forcefully on her bottom. That was hardly the only shock, however. Perhaps more frightening was realizing there was a vampire she hadn't seen, one that had come barreling up from the south, apparently also intent on making a snack of her. The two undead collided with each other, and latching on hard to this unexpected opportunity, Wilhelmina conjured up another blast of white magic, catching both of them in its area of effect.

Another gunshot, this time with an accompanying shriek, and a familiar voice saying 'Stand ready', as a shadow fell over Mina, with the group's contractor taking position beside her, where she deftly scored a severe blow on one of their two foes--having managed to untangle, for what little good it did them. Wonderful advice. Particularly the operative word, 'stand'. The young schoolteacher gladly took it to heart.

"Up we go," she muttered lightly, as she pushed herself to her feet, somewhat awkwardly with one hand fiercely gripped on her tome, still open and ready for use. "And down you go!" she pointed and loosed another burst. It wasn't so much overconfidence, as it was desperately hoping that by speaking the words they'd be given power, come true.

Misea watched the remaining soldier flee with a grimace, sighing and swinging the blood off of their lance. "I should've expected them to catch up to us when night fell... This is my fault." A sigh and an attempt to calm themselves, Misea headed over towards Almira. The girl in question had tripped over, dropping her sword, trying to hold herself to stop her sudden trembling.

"Almira! Almira, it's fine. It's alright... None of us were hurt, I'm right here. I'm so sorry..." Misea reached the girl within seconds, gently cradling her and trying to give her some form of comfort, quiet sobs ringing out into the silence they'd all won themselves.

Misea took a moment to glance over at Alex and Glendwr, their faint smile not lending much happiness. "I suppose we owe you all some answers. Ask away. At this point... Secrets are not something we can afford to keep." Almira was starting to quiet down and cling onto Misea's uniform, another small cooing and shushing offered to try and calm her further.

"Who are you? I know your names, and I know you're vampires, now, but who are you? Firstly, I need to apologize to Mira, had I any idea that you were vampires, I wouldn't have called you bears with human intelligence. I've never actually seen vampires until now, and the fact that not all of them were trying to kill us means that you're not the animals I was told you were. These men were highly skilled. Who were they?" Glendwr felt bad. He said many disparaging things about these two, and didn't even know it. Whatever urgency was there before is now even more dire, as these weren't vampire rabble, and he knew it. The fact he took on one was astonishing enough, killing another moreso, surviving an attack even more than that, and killing such strong ones the best part of it. Still, even if his shallow questions could be answered, the other, deeper ones could not, especially so late. "You don't have to answer. I'm only a mercenary, not a soldier, so you need not heed my inquiry if it doesn't serve you."

Luciel hadn't put up much of a fight... well, perhaps that wasn't fair to say. The Lieutenant had at least managed to land a glancing blow, which was more than her Captain would have been able to say. Luckily, in brighter news, the humans had all stayed on course, and aside from a single vampire, their pursuers had been cut down. It was only a matter of time before... the bastard was running.

"Son of a bitch...! Get back here!" Astrid growled, taking off after the lone survivor. If he reported back to his superiors, there would be more after them immediately... if they all died, then they would at least buy the time it would take them to figure out their search party had been killed. He had a head start, but she was gaining on him steadily, both out of being a better sprinter, as well as a greater knowledge of the local woods. It was only a matter of time...

Alex still had her sword drawn, breathing anxiously. One vampire had been successfully downed with her help, and now there were... oh. They were already being handled. "Ah... g-good job." This Astrid was definitely a vampire as well, and so was Misea, no doubt. It hardly seemed like they needed help, even... "Well... that could have been dangerous." Astrid went off racing against the remaining vampire, all the while leaving Misea and Almira to handle the revelation. "Yeah... so, uh, vampires huh?" Alex's gaze unconsciously fell over Almira again.

"So, this is definitely not about some arranged marriage. I'd like to know what you guys are doing all the way over here." Other vampires were giving chase to them, so it's not like it was some undercover operation to harm humans... it couldn't be, could it? Alex sighed. "And they... are there going to be more of them here on out?" She unsheathed her sword. There was no point in being so alert after all of their assailants either died or were escaping. Almira was a vampire, but something in Alex made her doubt she wanted to do something harmful for them.

No explanation, just a halfhearted apology, and Misea walked away from a somewhat stupefied Mina (and a probably less-so but maybe still kind of surprised Seph). Like a magnet, she was drawn straight to her charge, nothing more nothing less.

"Bwuh," the teacher muttered a small nonsense phrase, then managed some real words to the boy she'd helped hold off the eastern front with. "Can you believe that? C'mon, let's back to the fire and find out what exactly is what."

Not even bothering to brush herself off this time, Wilhelmina gave a slight wave, as she turned and made her way back to the rest of the group. As she arrived, it seemed an impromptu question and answer session had already broken out, and she listened as two of the others rattled off their thoughts on what had just transpired. It was just the contractors and their escorts right now, Misea's friend had disappeared at some point during the scuffle it seemed. Mina briefly wondered if she be worried about that, but nobody else seemed to be.

Part of her wanted to ask so many questions, but another more cautious side of the schoolteacher was worried she might give away just how green she was in this whole, adventuring business if she wasn't very judicious about the inquiries she chose to pursue.

...Then again, she supposed there was just the one burning one that mattered. Everything else was all gravy.

"Almira..." this was no time for pleasantries, fully formal was the way to go. "You said it was likely Lucy was taken by a vampire. I have to ask now if that was really just a 'guess', or do you actually know that. I hate to imagine this, but... it wasn't you that took her, was it? How many lies did you feed me, to accompany your nuggets of truth?"

"N-No, no I'd never--!"

"Shhh... Shh, shh. It's alright, Almira. Just try to calm down. I'll explain everything, please." Misea gently placed a finger against Almira's lips before she could work herself up again, helping her to stand, and letting her hide behind them.

"Right... My name is Misea Heide. I'm one of King Aamon's hands. Aamon, being the king of Gorletsia... This is his daughter, princess Almira Dranglei. No, there is no arranged marriage scheme. It's... It's much more dire than that. First, to address your worries, Mina, Almira hadn't left the castle until yesterday. If she told you anything about a lost friend, it was simply an assumption, matching information she was given. If anything, she was likely trying to help... But the girl has yet to bite a human, let alone charm one. I'm afraid if you've had a friend taken, it was someone else."

Hopefully that was enough. Looking at everyone else, Misea began again. "We're here because the king has devised a rather terrible plan. A buried wing of the castle's archives has been recently unearthed... And with it, some old magic, that I wish had stayed buried. The king, he... He wishes to end all human life on the continent. Usher in a never ending night. I told Almira of this, and as I expected, she wanted nothing to do with it. Which, is good... Because he requires her as a sacrifice to perform it." Misea quickly took Almira's hand and squeezed it tight, the girl's surprise coming right after.

"Wh-What!? Father wouldn't... He... B, But... No, that, that can't be why I've been... Ohhh..." Almost fainting from the realization, Misea caught her, helping her stay standing.

"As the princess' guardian, I would never let anything happen to her, even if this meant betraying the king. I didn't think I could trust any other vampire for help either... Until we ran into Astrid. Yes, she's a vampire, if that wasn't obvious, by now. I suspect she'll be back in a moment... She never did like leaving stragglers behind. Back to the point at hand, I... I went about hiring you all because I thought, if we were lucky, we could make it to the capital without issue. I was wrong... But you all proved yourselves more than capable. So... I would like to extend the offer I made previously. No, Alex, this will not be the last time. If they gave up after just that, they wouldn't be able to call themselves the king's guard."

Misea took pause to pet Almira's hair, trying to keep her calm. "Nothing's going to happen to you, I promise. To the lot of you, are there any questions, before I continue? There is a... I hope there is a solution to this ritual, and we mean to head beyond the capital to find it, but I will address that in a moment."

And with one final stride... range acquired. Hurling a hatchet from her belt at the fleeing assailant, the blade of the tool dug into his calf, slicing through and causing him to topple over. Of course, the man refused to give any semblance of useful information, but that wasn't why she had followed him. Simply couldn't have reports going back so soon... first went his hands, so he couldn't fight back, and after a rather aggressive bite and prolonged drink, off went his head. As the body slumped on the ground, lifeless, Astrid turned around, heading back for camp. At least she hadn't needed to go all that far.

Arriving within sight of the campfire within a few minutes, Astrid walked over to the gathering, rather bloodied. Most belonging to Luciel and the straggler she had chased down, though a small part was her own, despite her wound having mostly healed as she drank. Arriving just in time for Misea to be answering questions, it seemed.

"There. That one won't be reporting our whereabouts any time soon." The Countess interjected, plopping herself down on the grass with a notable bounce.

"So, not just some random noble but the actual princess and all that, huh?" Now that was something... they were certainly caught up in something very big now, and from what Misea was saying... "So you're not sure if there's a sure-fire way to stop the ritual... but either way you're gonna get hunted by the vampires thanks to what your king wants..." Alex was racking her brain, what the heck was this all about? Why did the king just up and wanted to kill all humans in the continent like that? Was that why they started attacking humans again? Now I'm really glad they can't use magic either. Really seems like they're all bad... Except for this little, meek vampire she just couldn't raise a finger against. Ugh, what was up with this predicament?

"I... Honestly, I'm not sure if poking in vampires affairs is something I ever wanna do, but I don't want them to lay a finger on Almira like that. If they're gonna sacrifice her for some dumb ritual to get rid of us, then that just makes it more important to keep her safe." Yeah, that made sense. For Alex. "I'll stay around for her sake, until you got that sorted, yeah? Since it's a big thing and risks human lives, I might as well." Ah... and there came Astrid, the flamboyant vampire... Alex didn't even know they could come in that kind of package too. "And I'm guessing Astrid here is the only one you could convince to help your cause?" Man... that was real trouble, if so. More against than for them.

"A father would do that? What little love he must have in his heart if his own daughter is so disposable. It's unforgivable!" Glendwr didn't want to focus on anything else. The fact that Aamon would cast aside his own daughter was enough for him to know that he was irredeemable by any means, even death. "Let me ask you this: when you reach Hrolt, what then? A plea for sanctuary? That won't last long any way you put it. Invade Gorletsia? The wanton slaughter would be unimaginable, and Aamon would use it to turn your people against you. If there is something else, I would hope we find whatever it is before they would track us to the capital." Much of the escape was impromptu, it seemed, and wasn't going to get much more concise.

The young--or at least, apparently youngish, who knew her actual age now that the truth was out--vampire began a vehement denial, before her guard cut it off, understanding further explanation was necessary. And oh boy was it a doozy of an explanation. Almost unbelievable. But who, when caught in a lie, would seek to replace their earlier position with an even greater whopper? Only the most truly of desperate.

Were Misea and Almira desperate? Well, yes, assuming their story was to be believed. Which meant it was possible, but... as the little girl--the shorter vampire--nearly toppled when details even she hadn't been privy to were revealed, it became harder and harder to doubt.

Doing her best to ignore the return of the last of the trio--couldn't she have at least cleaned up after herself, rather than parading in, stained in blood and gore--Wilhelmina took a few steps closer to the princess, still nearly cowering behind her keeper for shelter. She didn't know why she wanted to--for that matter, she didn't know if she'd be allowed to--but a part of her felt drawn. Some maternal instinct perhaps? Almira wasn't a child, not really, but her reactions carried enough of that same helpless vibe that it was constantly hard to forget.

Reaching out a hand, intending to lightly take hold of her chin and gently tilt her head upward, Mina smiled warmly. She wasn't the only one falling for this spell, if spell it was, Alex had indicated they had been swept up in it. But even if this was a charm, a glamour, would it really be so bad? Looking the princess in the eyes might be one way to find out.

"It seems I may have to revise your lesson plan. Mathematics and poetry must needs fall to the wayside, with the greater emphasis on history and human culture rightly taking their place at the forefront."

"Astrid, you aren't leaving a very good impression on our guests... At least the look tells me you got him. Yes, Alex, though for more, selfish reasons. Astrid is rather fond of humans... And would rather you all not be wiped out." Looking over the countess, the group could do with a proper break, and a river. Clean this blood off of themselves, and let the humans get some real sleep. The humans did seem on their side, so that was good. They'd make more than meatshields, if they could fight this well, and weren't planning to off Almira. Misea wouldn't hesitate to strike any of them down if the situation changed, though... Speaking of, they did tense a bit as Mina brought herself over, but nothing in her actions suggested hostility. Instead, she seemed rather taken with Almira. For the best... The odd vampire seemed interested in all of these humans, so if they cared back, all the better.

"Th-That... Might be for the best, Mina..." Almira tried to speak up, struggling to hide tears. She'd been so nervous to let any of them know what she was, to see the reception as positive was so pleasant and heartwarming, figuratively. Though...

"The plan, once we reach Hrolt, is to continue past it into the mountains. There's an old archive there... One older than Castle Dranglei's, and it might contain more information on this, or how to stop it. Might... The other option would be... To let Almira drink the blood of one of you, and ruin her as a catalyst for this, but I... That is something I would prefer to wait on, or to use as a last resort. She's had a very... Selective feeding process, growing up. Astrid and I are going to attempt to change things up, but going all at once, I fear any negative reactions."

Speaking of Almira, she'd slipped out from behind Misea, and snuck over to Sephtis, curious about why they were being so quiet... And worried over it, as well. "Hi... So I'm... Uh, not, nineteen. I'm... F-Forty seven, in your human years. Is... is that, fine? I don't weird you out or anything, right? I... If I do that's, that's fine... Just..."

Oh, dear... She likes that one, doesn't she? Misea couldn't help a sigh, watching the girl fluster.

"I wouldn't say I am the only one willing to help the cause, more so that Misea and Almira took off without asking for help out of urgency. The only reason I found them before they left my territory was because the King instructed me to collect Almira... I suppose he hoped I wouldn't ask any questions before offing Misea and retrieving her... and honestly, Misea, do you think I don't know how ghastly I look at the moment, still wearing that battle? I just bought us hours, perhaps even days depending on when those troops were set to report, before they send more this way." Astrid replied, though finally looking down at herself, she grimaced. It had been rather poor planning to not bring a proper change of clothing, though she hadn't expected to need one.

"You wouldn't happen to have a particularly large change of clothes, would you Misea? You or Almira's normal garb most definitely wouldn't fit on me... I can wash them out in a nearby brook, but any sort of spare would be useful until we reach the next town."

Seph had hung back, listening, but not engaging. Even though he had jumped to Almira's defense, was this really something he wanted to dedicate himself to? Protecting a vampire? The story was insane, but if it was true, did he really have a choice anymore? This wasn't just about protecting a vampire. This was about protecting humans and life in general. These sorts of monsters were the ones he was supposed to take care of, right?

He'd been so caught up in his thoughts that he hadn't even noticed Almira move away from Misea. He flinched as she spoke up, hand instinctively going towards the gun at his waist before stopping. "Ah, Almira. Sorry." She seemed worried about the age thing for some strange reason. "I mean... It makes sense, I suppose. That you're older. Vampires age slower, right?" It was one of the things he'd learned from his family before everything happened. "Why would that not be fine? I mean, it's a little strange to think of you as being that much older but it makes sense why you wouldn't have said anything."

Weird him out... She seemed so worried. What could he do but reassure her? "You're fine. I said that I wanted vampires and humans to be able to live together, remember?" It was something he had said without being entirely sure that he actually believed it, but that didn't matter right this minute. Even if he wasn't sure about all vampires, Almira really did seem like she was nice and sweet, so he could live with her, right? "It was just a lot to take in, that's all."

Ah, Astrid was a selfish one... whatever her reasons were, Alex made a mental note not to let her guard down too much around her. "I see..." She shot a glance to the countess again, neutral and not giving off too much of an impression. There was more to digest as it were. Misea's plan was a tad on the convoluted side, wanting to see an archive of sorts for anything that could help... and then was the last resort, which certainly left an impact. "I... that has to do with the fact she has yet to bite a human, right?" Misea did say that before. For whatever reason, it seemed to be a key to the ritual that Almira had no human blood in her.

"Well, I guess since our best option is to keep going towards Hrolt, not a lot has really changed." Alex nodded, still trying to wrap her head about how the rest of the journey was going to pan out... Almira was forty-seven? Gee, I wonder how old Astrid and Misea are, then. Well, no matter now. Astrid also pointed out that, since they left in a hurry, they don't know how many supporters they would actually have among the vampires. For some reason that calmed Alex down a little. "I guess not everyone is on-board with a plan to kill all humans then, that's less bad..." Thank goodness, "Sorry, Astrid, but I don't think anybody here matches your body frame." Alex herself was too small for any chance of compatible clothes.
