How do you keep your children safe online?

I'm not a parent myself, but I'll share some of the things that my parents did if it helps.

I forget what the browser was called, but my parents had gotten a new computer, and there was some kind of kid-friendly browser pre-installed on the computer that I could use. It had a bunch of online games and videos for kids, things like Scooby-Doo and Simon's Cat if I remember correctly, and there was absolutely nothing harmful on there, at least from my experience. This was back during a time when there wasn't any of that really weird kid content that you see on places like modern YouTube. I think my parents occasionally monitored what I was doing on there, too. Not always, but just a quick check-up to see how I was doing and to make sure that I didn't go on Internet Explorer or something.

I eventually grew out of that kid-browser and moved on to the actual internet. I only ever played Disney games, but my parents still monitored me every once in a while. I guess my advice would be to monitor what the kiddos are up to and keep an eye on them to make sure they aren't looking up or watching anything that might be harmful in the long run or influence them to do something bad.

If you can, restrict what they have access to online or limit the time they have on electronics. My parents did that, and it worked for me. Times have changed, so I have absolutely no idea if it will work for kids nowadays, but it's worth a shot.

I reccomend NOT  gving them a phone on youtube to just let them browse and fend off for themselves, even if you disable the auto-reproduce thingy, you're still likely to have your kids press on something weird because these videos are actually really common. I have a little cousin and all the time, whenever my grandmother gives her the phone to watch Youtube or is about to, I stop her and instead play with my little cousin. Plus with the recent Momo shit that can appaear randomly in Peppa Pig videos or whatever I would strongly reccomend to keeep Youtube away from them.

And yeah like @Armchair General said, actually know what they are watching, and that they aren't just browsing Youtube by themselves, oh and no Youtube Kids is probably worse than regular Youtube. I mean youtube already reccomends you things similar to what you see so if you see a lot of kids videos all of them will appear.

BUT those 3D rendered videos, ugh no, make sure they don't watch those lifeless cartoons and that they instead watch some 2D stuff.

Huh? When was it confirmed? I remember seeing it one year ago as a whatsapp dumb trend. Then it started getting in youtube kids videos recently. Is it actually a hoax though? Can you show me a link? I mean it's pretty weird that they would revive an old trend just like that,

My dad was telling me about this Momo thing this past Sunday in church of all places. Wasn't this Momo thing popular a year or so ago and doing basically the same thing?

It's crazy how something like that can be used so far out of context from it's original purpose.

Hey, uh, new parenting tip: Don't let your kids use the internet until they're 18.

definitely not a parent myself, but if i had to give recommendations it would be that if your kid(s) are really young then keep track of what the interact with and have like a safety drill with them to emphasis how to go about things safely like not clicking on suspicious links and the like, and keep any credit cards away from them since kids can blow through cash like crazy and its disgustingly easy to use one. also as they get older start trusting them more with self monitoring and giving them more freedom and the like since from what i've read letting kids feel independent and like you trust them can be really beneficial.

Well no, the challenges on whatsapp are a hoax, but this thing still does appear in Youtube doesn't it?

Not sure if it appears on Youtube, it might, but there have been no records of actual Momo messages, no screenshots, just...the word of it spreading like wildfire.

Yeah it was popular a year ago and it got revived for whatever reason. Yeah first it's a structure, then a suicide game, then a suicide game again and finally a creepy doll in "kid" videos who would tell you to do stuff to yourself.

Yeah that is true, however there is video evidence of it appearing on Youtube. I honestly whish this was never revived tbh, but I dunno why people want to fuck up kids minds it baffles me, it serves no real purpose like I get mind controlling capable adults but not kids.

It depends on age of a certain child. In case of the smallest ones I see no sense at all in buying them separate gadgets, that's really not what they need in such age. However I think it's ok when for example tablets can be used for watching cartoons sometimes but of course with limits of their screen time, many good parents act like this. But if children play with gadgets during all day, than it's really a bad sign for their parents.
Limits for screen time are necessary in older age and even for teens too, however they can become not so strict during the time. In older age you even discuss the time for such limits with your children and decide together what's really fair and is ok for the both sides.
It's necessary to teach children how to use gadgets and net wisely, and also explain them about possible web dangers. For example, your children must know about being careful with their personal information and not sending their photos to unknown strangers https://www.covenanteyes.com/2012/01/03/7-dangers-of-the-internet-for-kids/ .
There's also a need of filtering and blocking certain web contet according to children age, like the ones connected with violence, porn, drugs etc. For this purpose various types of parental control software are really helpful, like for example Windows Live Family Safety, Qustodio, Net Nanny, Refog Keylogger https://www.refog.com/ , Norton Online Family, Social Shield and so on. Many of them can be used on different gadgets and all of them help parents to monitor their children activities and block all inappropriate content for them. Besides they usually work in a hidden mode and are really hard to circumvent.

I’d say maybe give them a set of websites for them to go to, and maybe let them have Netflix on a tablet or something.

Also, from personal experience, YouTube can be a little addicting. So more reason not to let them on YouTube.
