I think that out of the Heroes shown, I favor the DQ4(?) protagonist with the green garb and gold crown.

Apparently, his name is Solo at least, the default name is. The female option's default name is Sofia.

I did not grow up with Banjo & Kazooie in the sense that I owned the game or rented it. I played bits of it on the N64 that was at my local McDonalds. I usually just ran around Spiral Mountain, because I didn't know what I was doing, but I had fun nonetheless. I watched a few Let's Plays of the first one, and one of the second one, and I delighted in the game's music and charm. I'm pretty pleased as punch to see the bear and bird in this game. They feel right at home.

Now, Dragon Quest...

Dragon Quest is my jam. I got Dragon Warrior Monsters as my first game, and, even though I've never really beaten it, I played it *endlessly*. My next game was around seven years later, when Dragon Quest IV was released. I've beaten IV, V, VI, and VIII, I've played I, II, III, VII, IX, DWM2 Tara/Cobi, DQMJ, DQMJ2, and I've bought Dragon Quest XI on PS4 which, I might add, I regret doing now since the Switch version is simply that much better, which I wasn't really expecting it to be. I adore Dragon Quest profusely. Hell, I read one of the manga, Dai no Daibouken some time ago through to the end, and enjoyed every bit of it. I lamented when we didn't get Joker 2 Professional, and was terribly heartbroken that they didn't release Terry's Wonderland 3D, or Tara and Cobi's Adventure 3D. Hell, Joker 3 didn't even come out in America, either, and I can never find footage of it.

One of the YouTuber's I've watched though I have dropped off pretty hard from him recently LPed multiple Dragon Quest games, and I watched a grand majority of them, and even got to appear in a few episodes of the sixth game which this happened nearly a decade ago and I got to share my love of the prequel.

To see Dragon Quest receive representation in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a dream come true for me.

I love that there's Erdrick (with Abel's V's palette as an alternate), Solo (with I's palette as an alternate), Eight (particularly with my favorite, Terry's palette as an alternate arguably II as well, but really, it's Terry. The eyes are even purple!), and Eleven (with, weirdly enough, Angelo's palette as an alternate). The wave of nostalgia when the Dragon Quest overture began playing, as well as Adventure...it was truly a beautiful feeling.

Minecraft is certainly huge but being huge doesn't mean you're automatically a good fit for Smash Bros.

Smash is undeniably a very character driven game. Minecraft may be huge but....is Steve? Does anyone really care about Steve? Now I'm not the biggest expert on Minecraft but as far as I know he's just the default player avatar. People love what you can do in Minecraft but I doubt any Minecraft player is super invested in Steve.

So on that front Steve probably isn't a very solid pick. Banjo was big at a time the industry was a lot smaller and has practically died but he still got a lot going for him. A lot of Nintendo fans very vocally still care for him, he's a good representation for an important era in Nintendo's history and its really easy making moves for him

Everything that can be said about Steve can be fired Villager's way. Didn't stop the Villager from having a creative moveset.

And I'd still argue that Villager was the wrong choice. And this isn't even coming from the standpoint of "I dislike Animal Crossing." I DO dislike Animal Crossing, but my actual thoughts are that Animal Crossing has actual identifiable characters that would pretty much all be better than a generic villager. Like Tom Nook, KK Slider, etc. And now we have Isabelle to prove my point.

The Villager makes more sense since he/she is who you play as in the games, not Tom Nook (even though I would be down for Nook as a playable character just to beat the shit out of him for putting me in debt)

This is all I could find of the DQ X Hero/ine. Note their appearance is entirely subject to change, due to dying early on apparently and then being reincarnated into whichever of the MMORPG's varied races and classes you desire.

XI's Hero- The Luminary- Not to be confused with the vocation in earlier games with the same name.

It is often the case that the player character is less memorable/less identifiable than an NPC or party member. It is, after all, the NPCs which immerse us in the world.

It's why, for example, people have asked for Sans in Smash, not the player character from Undertale.

Idc for either them.

I tried out a few DQ parts (I, II, VI, IX), but none of the parts could appeal me because the characters especially main protagonist are bland. The fact that they have no voice does not make it more lively either. Since this series is very common right now I am not surprised about this unit's choice.

I never played the two Banjo games although they were good from what I have seen. I only had to deal with him in Diddy Kong Racing in which I hardly used him because of his low speed for being very big. This choice comes pretty much out of nowhere for me since it is a about 20 years old very small series which was produced by a company which does not exist anymore for almost the same passed time period. However seeing him gives me little hope to see Conker too.

That said DQ protagonist seems to be good choice even if I am not really fond of this series, but I really hope for deeper characters.

I think Sakurai made the right choices. Except for missing Madason (but I guess that his different weapon meant he couldn't be an alt). The rest are all pretty derpy.

I was really hoping to play as VI, honestly. Though, I figure the reasoning behind that is trying not to overlap signature weaponry. I dunno if I'd particularly call it his signature, but he is the only one in his game to wield the Zenithian Sword, much like Solo.

I do not have strong connections to either franchise, but I fully understand their significance. Just as Shin Megaman Tensei and Persona make up one influential JRPG, Dragon Quest is another one, and one that the Japanese love.

Banjo and Kazooie are also very influential, but more so in the West. That was Sakurai’s way of shouting out for the bois here.

I think the next two DLCs have to be as influential, if not a little more or less so than these franchises represented.

There was a rumor a Banjo Threeie would be announced at Microsoft's show, and Banjo Tooie is on my list of N64 games of my childhood to revisit since I never beat it. I was playing the game during the conference, which of course meant I was playing the game a few short days before THIS announcement. I didn't believe in the rumor myself, I was just trying to give it my energy. But it's weird that the rumor was wrong, but the "Banjo in Smash" rumors that leap frogged off of it ended up being true. And Banjo was never leaked as far as I know. I really think Smash fans willed this guy into existence.

Dairy Queen Hero is somebody I have no personal experience with. Only Dragon Warrior 1's Hiiro but he isn't one of the alts. Just appearing in the final smash. Apparently people consider Erdrick the series "Marth" despite hailing from the third game. I can understand some exasperation at getting another nameless protagonist from a recent japanese RPG so soon after the last one. One that did come out here in the west but was deliberately sabotaged to have worse music. The question of whether something like that "deserves to be in Smash" is an icky one. But for me, the Smash roster has been complete since Brawl with the lone exception of Ridley.

Perhaps some in the West disagree with The Hero's inclusion, but it makes me wonder how well Banjo is being received in Japan. K Rool and Dark Samus are characters created by western games, but still appeared in Japanese franchises. Whether it's Crash, Spyro, or Banjo, there's bound to be some "eh?"s there. How about we call this a trade? The next trade can be Dante and the DOOMslayer

The reasoning behind this stems from the fact that, even in the first game, Erdrick is referenced. They're the ancestor of the hero from Dragon Quest I, as well as the ancestor to the trio from Dragon Quest II, renowned for saving the world from darkness ages ago. It also helps that Dragon Quest III was, and still might be, THE MOST POPULAR Dragon Quest game ever (at least in Japan)

I think it needs to be said that Sakurai never actually planned to include Banjo in Melee. He just said it would've been difficult to include Banjo when asked by a fan due to being owned by Rare

Oh yeah. My bad!

He has no problem using swords like the rest, but in artwork, yes he is usually shown with a staff. His ultimate exclusive weapon is the Dragon Staff. Whereas the Erdrick gets the Sword of Kings (which in the first two games is known as Erdrick's Sword); IV Hero gets the Zenithian Sword. Though the VIII Hero can spears and boomerangs, his real ultimate weapon is the Dragovian King Sword.

The images are not being displayed for some reason. But I'll put them up:

latest?cb=20100117190833

Angelo (From DQVIII)

latest?cb=20140912111341

Terry (from DQVI)

I'm not familiar with Terry, but Angelo is a DQ favorite of mine.

The legitimate but secondborn son of an irresolute noble, after his father and mother died, Angelo went to live as a little orphan at an abbey. He was immediately greeted by Marcello, who acted kindly towards him -until Angelo gave his name, at that very moment Marcello hated him. Marcello is the firstborn but illegitimate son of Angelo's father, once Angelo was born, Marcello was heartlessly kicked to the curb as unnecessary to secure the lineage, and thus he hates his half-brother, despite Angelo having no choice in his birth.

Angelo matures into a fun-loving young man, liking gambling and able to charm the ladies, but not wholly irresolute. His relationship with his half-brother remains strained to put it mildly, but they both serve in the Templars, Angelo as a common soldier, Marcello as their leader. Angelo can be serious when he has to be, but he can relax and jokingly laugh off being at a casino where his dad might have gambled away his sons' future fortunes.

From a gameplay perspective, Angelo can use swords, staffs, and bows, with magic set that makes him a healer in the foremost (at least until VIII's Hero gets Omniheal towards the end of the game).

Long story short, Angelo has a bit of depth to him, a little unusual for Dragon Quest, which tends to rely on charm for its casts. And that is why I like him. Thus, I am happy he gets to be one of the costumes in Smash.

I'm perfectly okay with both of them

I'm not really surprised by either of them getting in. Dragon Quest is probably the 2nd most influential rpg, right behind Dungeons and Dragons. Banjo & Kazooie are a pair that really just feel at home here, I just find it funny to see Microsoft characters in Smash now.

As a big fan of Dragon Quest, this was quite the news.

It was already great seeing that one of them was gonna be in... but then three more as alternate skins? The rest still appearing even if it's in the Final Smash? AWESOME.

I don't really have much to say for B-K. Never played those games. It's a great thing for their fans, I can give you that.

Happy for DQ fans. Only thing that bothers me is that they didn't put any of the DQ female heroes in there, which I know a lot of people were hoping for.

Banjo is A+ and I'm glad it wasn't something stupid like the guy from Minecraft or the guy from Halo.

Yeah, that is a bit odd. I feel that, in this case, however, it could be that the male counterparts are generally consistently more popular than the female counterparts. That, and a number of the games lack female counterparts. Namely, I, II, V, VI, VII, VIII, and XI.

I'm not well versed in their characters at all, but they did have at least 4 female heroes they could have used, right? Looking at their Final Smash makes it seem like every lead in the series is a Toriyama sameface guy.

III, IV, and IX. Yes, four in total if you count the MMO. Generally, the male is simply the default option.

They hardly ever use the female for their own in-universe Dragon Quest crossovers, either. There was an arcade DQ game that featured the males amongst the rest of the game's cast.
