Things You Didn't Realize Way Too Late Into The Game

Recommended Posts

Got an extra one while I was thinking about team compositions.

For Group Tasks, even if you do not plan on using any of the extra movement types (Armor, Mounted, Flying), you can still make use of the abilities they unlock at certain ranks. For convenience, I copy and pasted the chart from the main Serenes Forest site here.

Heavy Armour Weight -3 (C) Smite (B) Weight -5 (A+) Armored Effect Null (S+)
Riding Dexterity +4 (C) Movement +1 (A+) Cavalry Effect Null (S+)
Flying Alert Stance (B) Alert Stance+ (A+) Flying Effect Null (S+)

The easiest to obtain is Heavy Armor rank C, which reduces weight by 3. Reducing weight will increase your Attack Speed, making it easier to double enemies. Just remember to equip the ability if you want it to take effect!

Weight -3/-5 and Movement +1 are amazing even you if you dont plan on using a mounted/armored units. Lysithea Gremorys with +1 movement and Range is a god on earth.

Alert Stance is also great but mostly for Flyers, cause Master tier Flyers have +10 avoid. Give them an Avoid Ring and they are the best bait units in the entire game. Ingrid and Petra had like a 5-10 chance to get hit with that, after Alert Stance.

On the topic tho, for me, i just finished BL after both BE routes (only GD missing) and never knew about the B support chance to recruit students. I thought that it only makes them easier to recruit, like now they need D in something and no C/C+. Gonna try it for my final route.

The problem with Group Task is that they're awfully slow, they build more support than skill level, even with a perfect and a proficient character. That's something I realized too late in the game, I was hoping Marianne could access Holy Knight just by leaving her on Stable Duty the whole game, it just doesn't get there. Had to focus daily goal and instruct to even get a chance at the certification.

On skills, I've been getting great use of Dex+4, it really has an impact on your hitrates, especially as you go into BowKnight and can hit realiably from absurd range. Movement+1 is obviously amazing (especially considering that you actually lose one mov going from Paladin into Holy/Dark Knight), but the others are a bit garbage imo. By the point you get to an S+ (not gonna happen outside of NG+) your unit can probably take effective damage in the face without worrying.

Weight reduction is nice, but Heavy Armor is basically useless unless you're going for that specifically. And they don't stack, which sucks. Alert stack I'm not sure about, it probably has good use for some Warp tactic with Wyvern Lords, but I'm not much for that kind of strategy so for me it was unremarkable.

They could've made them a lot better by just allowing us to set all 3 at the same time, it's not like it's a broken mechanic since it gives fuckall exp.

In order to unlock the Black Eagles route the prof has to talk with Edelgard in the month of February and have a decent support rank. I though that in all routes the lords would say the same thing. Now I have to do the first 10 chapters yet again.

I’m on my third playthrough and I just discovered I can check on people’s support levels while choosing who to dine with

Any idea on what the "+" means there? I'm sure it's not multiple steps conversations (arrows over letter), so I wonder what it is. For some, like B+, I'd guess it means "you're close to A", but I have A+ with a few characters (and I'm pretty sure the S rank is completely up to player choice, you don't need additional support after A?).

this is more of a "heads up" kinda tip, but when trying to get the dancer class today, I discovered that needing 13 points of charm to win the dance competition is a lie.

I had Linhardt set to get the dancer class. He had exactly 13 points of charm, but did not win. I soft resettled my game about half a dozen times, but he never won. The majority of the time it was the Blue Lions, Ashe and sometimes Dedue(LOL) who won. Dorothea was always the Black Eagles contestant and won a couple times.

I eventually gave up figuring there was no way Linhardt was gonna win, despite supposedly meeting the requirements. I looked it up online, and you are supposed to get a text box saying you unlocked the dancer class, so yeah, I couldn't get it at all. SO that was kind of a let down.

Luckily I had a save file set where it was before I had chosen a dancing representative. I reloaded that save file and will try for Flayn, since I chose not to recruit Dorothea who I understand is a highly recommended character to take the dancer class.

I think the game says you need more than 13 charm to win. At least, that's what I remember the Manuela hint saying.

And this is why hoarding is not always a pitfall.

I don't think there was anything. And maybe that's impressive for clearing the game in a bit less than 19 hours. But I guess one thing is recruitment, I knew full well about it though. I just never cared to recruit anyone in my first playthrough. I don't really regret it though. Because my first playthrough in each route I want to focus on the main characters of each house. Though in Blue Lions I recruited almost every student and the same in my Golden Deer route that I'm currently on. Next playthrough I'm only going to focus on my favorites though.

Edit: Also Combat Arts. I knew full well that you could change them around and what not, I just never used them. I've also only used forging once or twice. There isn't much of a need for it.

Forge restore all your weapon uses. and since you'll be drowning in them later on, it's actually a good idea to use them when your weapons is closed to being destroyed.

I was warned of this in advance, but for everyone else:

You CAN spare enemy characters post timeskip, but only if you kill them with Byleth. You can leave, say, Claude alive, and he’ll help you out.

Not everyone though, don't get your hopes too high

Actually in Crimson Flower

Spoiler

I know that you can spare Claude and recruit Lysithea, but I've killed everyone else with Byleth and didn't get the chance to spare anyone (Felix, Ingrid, Hilda, Ignatz all died without choice).

I've recruited Leonie, Marianne and Sylvain, maybe you can spare those if you fight them.

Post timeskip, and on my second playthrough, I just went to promote Hanneman into a Gremory.

Apparently, that's a female only class. I had no idea until just now - probably because it seems like he's basically the only male unit who specialises in magic out of the two routes I've played (GD first, BL second).

Guess it's time to decide if I want to just stick with his advanced job, or work on Horse rank...

I'm on chapter 10, first exploration day. Only just figured out that fish will nibble more than once, and it's usually a different fish each time. I feel like I would've done so much better during the fistful of fish event a couple chapters ago if I didn't just stick with the first fish. I think next time I'm just going to hoard all my bait and wait. Not that I think I need it, I'm almost A rank for the professor level anyway.

I also only just realized that gifts and lost items can be used to increase motivation with your students, not just for recruiting from the other classes.

Learned a lot from this thread. I've been ignoring authority almost completely (I think my highest rank is C on Byleth), and the only battalion/gambit I use regularly is stride unless I'm trying to break a monster's shields. Guess I'll have to work on that.

Literally today (chapter 13 GD) I discovered how to view stat changes upon promotion (it's a button, ZR/ZL I think, within the certifications menu). It even breaks down class base boosts (which are permanent) against class modifiers (which only apply in the given class).

I literally just found out you can control characters in 3rd person, Valkyria chronicles style during battles. It’s really difficult, but way more immersive.

Also, I’m sure someone mentioned this, but you can repair legendary weapons like normal weapons.

Finally, Bolt Axe and Levin Sword have three range when you upgrade them. Totally missed this until someone posted it in the weapons thread.

For NG+ files, don't upgrade your Professor Levels immediately.

Do the initial exploration first to get a "free level-up." After doing this, but before ending the exploration, upgrade to your professor level to its desired value. This will save you 500 Renown to spend on other things.

I just realized tonight that the Magic Bow+ (?)  also has 1-3 range.

It took me 2.5 routes to realize that it is actually possible to highlight all of the enemy's range.

I assumed it wasn't possible because it was a different button from the usual games.

Sometime in the 2nd part, I was wondering were these abilities were going since I couldn't see a newly gained one from Ignatz. Ended up finding out: oh. You can switch out Abilities. (and also combo arts). Needless to say, the next chapters were easy.
