Which waifu or husbando were you surprised by to have more fans than you thought?

I consider Mia to be the weakest Greil Mercenary as a character myself. So I see what you mean.

If I had to guess her appeal, it's just simple surface charm. A confident, cute girl with a sword. I'm not sure how anyone could find depth in Mia.

Yeah; Mia doesn't have a particularly interesting backstory or an interesting dymanic or memes (not even memes; the thing about her voice acting seems to he a more recent thing and she was very popular even in Japan where that thing isn't memeable)

She is probably the biggest example of a character stading out by character design alone, which we have to admit it, it's very cool and pretty specially compared with the rest of the Mercenaries and many of the other characters.

Really? Tethys isn't that popular? I liked her.

From my experience it unfortunately seems to be the case.  In fact other than the occasional praise for Joshua I haven't seen people praise too many of Sacred Stones' characters other than the main playable lords... for obvious reasons.

Looking at the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm surprised Dorothea isn't more popular than she is. When her character was first announced, I thought she'd be the next Tharja/Camilla popularity-wise, again reinforced by her being a bi-option, but I was greatly mistaken on that front.

Which is a shame, because unlike Tharja and Camilla, Dorothea is actually a good character.

Goes to show how much people appreciate the yandere aspect of their characters more than their physical appearances.

I actually remember seeing a little popularity for Dorothea in the fanfiction community when she first showed up... for obvious reasons.  Ever since Three Houses' release, I have to agree that it seems like Edelgard has pretty much taken up all of the popularity recently (Probably for her status as being the new Lyndis/Lucina character).

I wasn't implying every fan of them only likes them because boobs, but many comments about them do indeed paint that picture. Which is sad, really.

I wouldn't know, since I haven't really dabbled with fanfiction myself, but that's interesting info.

Yeah, Edelgard being popular was a no-brainer, really. As you said, she's the Lyndis/Lucina of this game. Makes you wonder why Celica and Eirika are largely ignored, even though their position is similar.

So this is essentially a "which character in the series had the most surprising reception" topic?

Yeah. That would have shortened my 3 questions down to 1 question.

As for Kronya is she really that popular?

Does Kronya really have a fanbase that actually considers her waifu material, or do they just list her jokingly like I tried to start in the Forum Games?  'Cause well... you know...

I met one in the Heroes forum. I was arguing whether or not Kronya is fanservice like Camilla and Tharja, and I was arguing that she is not. Having killer boobs and a skintight outfit is nice, but her insane disposition makes her unattractive and no guy would stick their junior in crazy. Then a Kronya fan said they do not mind the crazed look and would not mind sticking their junior in crazy. So, different strokes for different folks I guess.

To me, Kronya is more like Aliens from the Alien movies. Aliens have sexual imagery and motifs, but that does not mean it is fanservice that your want to pork.

Tellius as a series.  Is it a good game?  Yeah.  Is it the Best Thing Ever?  Not in my eyes.

Runner-up is Jugdral, just because the gameplay was so tedious that I tried multiple times to finish it and never made it past Chapter 3.

That would be Blazing Blade for me. It has an okay story, but I find the game to be boring since there is no navigable world map and post game. It is my second least favorite Fire Emblem game that I have played.

Shadow Dragon is my least favorite. I find the requirement to kill your army to access extra chapters to be asinine. After I was forced so sacrifice Jeigan, I only continued playing a few more chapters before quitting.

Have not tried out Tellius yet.

I guess Reinhardt is more meme than husbando? No reason he can't be both, tho.

It seems like most people view him more as a meme than a husbando.

I really am disappointed to this day that Tethys isn't a more popular character, let alone waifu.  Super strong candidate for being the hottest dancer in the whole series and pretty much everybody overlooks her for some reason.  Do people really only know Sacred Stones for its incest?

I like Tethys too, but I imagine trying to romance her is like being Frederick trying to romance Cordelia. Tethys already has her sight on Gerik, so she already comes with baggage, and that might turn some people off.

Seth is pretty hot. I love his voice and lines in Heroes. He sounds so dreamy. I would totally steal his lines and whisper them to a girl.

Ehhhhhhhh……. If you've been on the internet as long as I have, you'd find some people liking the idea of porking things like Kronya or even the xenomorphs sound like going on a date with Tom Hanks to rescue kittens by comparison.

This, weirdly enough, strikes me as one of the more well thought out things I've read in your posts. Conglaturations.

I'm going to go back to Makalov real quick.

21 hours ago, Ertrick36 said:

I can understand it, honestly.  The "serial killer" characters are so absurd that they're basically comical, while Makalov is something approaching what an actual chronic gambler in real life would be like.

Which, while I won't say I like Makalov (I don't), is the idea of Makalov that I like. He isn't absurd.
And the idea of Makalov, like the idea of Shinon, add a hint more realism to the player's forces. Whilst having a virtuous army of justice is wonderful, there is something to appreciate in making it more earthy, which requires including a few real imperfections.

Also the thing about Makalov is that people like Darcia and/or Astrid and is downright paintful seeing them having to put down whit his shit, especially Astrid, who had many better supports in PoR.

I actually liked Makalov's support with Astrid.

How grounded he is constitutes a big part of why I like Makalov. He's "a guy with problems," his life is a wreck but not in some hyper exaggerated way. He's pathetic, and while he's definitely responsible for his actions they're still the result of, you know, a chronic habit. There's an extent to which he can't help himself, even when it's something destructive to himself and those he cares about (which his A support with Astrid does a good job emphasizing). It makes him pitiable, and I find it very compelling.

Well if we're sticking to just the FE franchise...

Back when I was a teenager with Blazing Sword, I didn't understand the appeal of Florina as a waifu pretty much because I didn't get the appeal of super shy girls.  I'm also not sure what it is about Ninian either, can't say I hate her or anything I just find her to be a less interesting/compelling version of Azura if that makes sense.

I suppose Berkut is technically another one as some people mentioned.  After I played Shadows of Valentia I found myself wondering if people really consider him a compelling character they wanted to marry or if it's just because of Ian Sinclair's performance.

For my pick of most surprising, I guess I would have to go with the rhyming Gatekeeper, primary reason for this surprise though is because I actually didn't talk to him when I played Three Houses.  I pretty much stuck to everyone who offered a side quest and never even got a chance to talk to him.  So by default he definitely makes for a surprise.

Does Kronya really have a fanbase that actually considers her waifu material, or do they just list her jokingly like I tried to start in the Forum Games?  'Cause well... you know...

  Reveal hidden contents

She kills Jeralt.

Going off that one reddit post from earlier, I guess it's kind of surprising to see that Dedue actually has fans as a husbando.  He's not really a despicable character in my opinion, but he really comes off as the sort of Dorcas/Bartre character of the game in just being kind of unremarkable in my opinion.

Characters I'm surprised aren't more popular:

I really am disappointed to this day that Tethys isn't a more popular character, let alone waifu.  Super strong candidate for being the hottest dancer in the whole series and pretty much everybody overlooks her for some reason.  Do people really only know Sacred Stones for its incest?

I wish I could list Manuela in here as well, but after all these years I've come to accept that I'm one among the very few who likes women like her.  It helps that she reminds me of Misato Katusragi in a few ways so that sure drew me to her.

Funny, to me at least the stand outs of Sacred Stones were Colm and Neimi, and I always thought Tethys was underrated.

More like "people want to fuck anything".  Humans are strange creatures.

If it comes down to that, then of course it's not surprising every character has at least a few fans.  You know Largo from Thracia 776?  I sure as hell don't remember him much, but I'm sure someone somewhere out there adores that palette-swap of a man.

I guess the issue is what you like about Makalov is what a lot of other people hate about him, and that's why you don't understand the hate.

And I suppose that can't really be helped.  I like horribly flawed or morally ambiguous characters like Oboro or Edelgard, yet there are some out there who absolutely despise them and I just don't get that hate.  Or, I know the reasoning behind their hate, but I don't empathize with it.

In any case, he's at least more entertaining to me than "Weed-Joke" Setsuna.

The discussion about "porking aliens" was hands down the best thing I've read at 2:30 am in months.

Here's a "who are you surprised doesn't have as many fans", Nader. Come on, he's total bara bait.

Oh, and Miklan's not much at first glance, but I'm sure someone out there loves him. He's big, he's strong, he's got a tragic story, he literally unleashes the beast within. Somebody's into that. If there's Godzilla/kaiju porn...then there's Beast!Miklan stuff.

Is Makalov really that hated? I get his archetype is really hated but I did not think he was this hated.

I'll say that it's an exception that I ever hear people say good things about him, and that I heard about his reputation without ever having even seen Makalov's face.

Of course I now know things about him at this point, but when I first heard about him I didn't even know which game he came from - I just knew that people hated his guts.

Astrid was the only reason I tolerated him so I shouldn't be surprised to see hate for him.

Say'ri is the only character who's popularity I don't quite understand. I don't think that she's a bad character or unit or anything like that, but I've seen people say that Say'ri is one of their favorite Awakening characters before, which surprises me. She has a low number of supports, her niche is likely to already be fulfilled by the time she joins, and she can't have kids with anyone besides the avatar. The only way I can see Say'ri being as popular as she is is due to having story relevance, but it's during the Valm arc, which is generally considered the weakest part of the game narratively (that said, I do find her unique speech patterns and the situation with her brother to add some flair to an otherwise uninteresting arc). I can see why people like her, don't get me wrong, I just a little baffled at how Say'ri is as popular as she is.

To a lesser degree, I'd also say that the amount of attention Cordelia gets surprises me. I can understand why people either love or hate her as a character and unit, and there is much to discuss about both aspects. It's more the sheer amount of topics dedicated to her, as well as the amount of times she's in general that catches me off guard.

I know of several better examples of "characters make killing entertaining" than Peri. Said examples are also tend to be in the shooter genre, and not everyone enjoys those. That's the only reason I can think of for why Peri has fans.

If there were characters I'd say I were surprised to have fans, they'd be Vaike, Ricken, Hayato, Lilith, Setsuna, Hisame, Nomah, Metodey, and basically every minor NPC in the series that hasn't had recurring appearances and isn't the Three Houses gatekeeper, as well as just about every mid-boss in the series that isn't a capturable unit in Fates.

Vaike allows me to say that Gerard is "Vaike done right", but admittedly that's extremely niche. Why did you have to grow too big for my phone, Blustone? And why did the apps I didn't even know existed have to constantly update?

Ricken is a solid mage, and I's say he has some underappreciated "war is hell" supports that aren't brought up much.

Nomah has some hilarious battle lines, so it sucks that his support sucks, he's easy to miss, and he competes with Laurent for "most back-up mage in the game".

Cheese Lover would be memetic if his lines had voice acting. Same could be said about several quest givers in Echoes.

Kotaro contributes towards making Chapter 17 of Fates the best Sword of the Samurai in-joke I have ever seen. Admittedly, it's also a joke only I would get.

That's... all I can think of, honestly.

As someone who is one of those people who list Say'ri as one of their favorites in Awakening, I feel the sudden urge to mention that I never realized she was that popular. Actually, I had no clue until I read this post here.

For me, it's less her relevance to the plot or her niche as a unit (I always use her, because she is one of my favorites), it's just that I really like her personality (the Lady of War character type has always been a favorite of mine, and Say'ri fits that pretty well, I'd say). Her character design is, in my opinion, one of the better ones in Awakening, too, but it's first and foremost her personality and character that makes her a favorite of mine. I do wish she had more supports, true, but what is there is enough for me to like her.

I also don't really hate the Valm Arc, nor do I consider it to be the weakest part of Awakening, so that might have something to do with it.
