Heroes' Epithets Meanings Compendium!

Have you ever wondered what your favorite hero's epithet means in other languages? If so, this is the place for you!

Fire Emblem: Heroes is currently available in 9 languages: Japanese, English, German, Spanish (Europe), Spanish (Latin American), French, Italian, Traditional Chinese and Portuguese, each with its own epithets for every hero.

Here on Serenes Forest the English language is a must, so here's my idea: I'd like to create a whole compendium of every epithet's meaning in each of the remaining 8 languages, in order to make it comprehensible by every english speaker, native or not.

The task is not an easy one, and I surely can't do this on my own, so here's what you can do: if you know even just one of these 8 remaining languages, and if you have some time to kill, you can pick some epithets and translate them in english as faithfully as possible, but so that the epithet keeps its original meaning AND makes sense in English.

I'll take care of the italian ones, since i'm italian, and also some of the japanese ones, given that i'm studying japanese at university, but new or updated interpretations or even better translation for one epithet is always welcome! 

I'll periodically update this topic following the Catalog's hero list since adding them all at once would be worse than committing suicide and, after that, I'll surely update whenever new units are added to the game, so I really hope this idea is well received, because I think something really cool and informative could come out of it.

I can also accept requests about adding characters earlier than I would normally do, if you can't wait to know your favorite hero's epithets' meanings.

There are only two rulea I'd like you to follow:

1) Don't use Google Translate: I'd like this topic to be as accurate as possible, and online translators aren't exaclty the most reliable thing in the world, so please post your translations ONLY if you made them yourself;

2) Don't suggest translations for languages you don't know because of apparent similarities; again, post a translation only if you know it's correct, please don't try and post one because an epithet looks very similar in two different languages and thus you think they must mean the same exact thing.

I'm a linguistics major, and I'm learning both Spanish and Japanese to support it. I'm significantly further along in Spanish, however, so I'll try my hand at that. All the titles you already posted are exactly the same as the english translation, so I'll do some more. 

 

Ares: Black Knight

Ares: Caballero oscuro- Ares: Dark Knight

This one isn't huge, it still generally means the same thing, but maybe it was edited a little bit to clear up some confusion about the Black Knight himself, since his name is Caballero Negro.

 

Alm: Imperial Ascent

Alm: Sucesor imperial- Alm: Imperial Successor

I'm starting to think that most of the Latin American translations don't have much significance. Nonetheless, it was probably changed because the english title doesn't make much sense as a title in Spanish. English is weird.

 

Celica: Warrior Priestess

Celica: Vicaria guerrera- Celica: Vicarious Warrior

Vicarious is a rather interesting choice of words. It represents her actions well, but I'm not exactly sure why they chose that over priestess.

There's no one-word translation for peerless.

well, i said i'm still studying japanese, i'm still a beginner, so i don't expect to be too reliable for that, nor too familiar with every kanji's possible meanings, and i also said that better translations are welcome

As for Anna's title in Japanese, 特務機関 in context should be translated literally instead of as a single word, so instead of "secret service", you get something along the lines of "special operations".

Criada is a common word that would translate to maid/female servant. The problem with this is that Hilda is the exact opposite of that being a noblewoman. Criada comes from criar which can be used to describe how someone was raised so I debated having something like "raised lazily" or "grew-up lazy" but that also doesn't make sense since the Spanish epithet would be grammatically incorrect if that's the meaning they were trying to convey. I decided to look up the word on multiple online dictionaries until I came across this definition from wiktionary:

"Persona que ha recibido la mejor educación y cuidados"

Uso: anticuado

"Person who has received the best education and care"

Usage: antiquated

Now, I have never read or heard of the word "criada" being used like that (likely because it's antiquated according to website) and I don't know how reliable wiktionary is but assuming this is correct then this definition fits Hilda 100% so I went along with it and translated it to mistress because it's the best word I could think of that would match up with the meaning and Hilda's character.

If anyone with more knowledge could chip in on this to tell me if I'm right or wrong or what you would do differently then I'd be appreciative.

Hilda has exhausted me so I'll stop now and might add more some later.

I have never played any of the Akaneia games so I can't say if it has anything to do with her character. I'm pretty sure it's not colloquial. At least not in the area I'm from. I'm pretty sure I heard the phrase in the lyrics of many songs though (it's actually very common for songs to repeat a word twice like that. It rhythmic I guess Edit: although now that I think about it, it's not like that's exclusive to Spanish or anything so maybe this doesn't mean anything but I still feel likes I hear repetition like that more in Spanish songs than any other language) Mainly from old songs that my grandma listens to. Heck, judging from a quick google search it's a title for many songs. I don't know if music was their inspiration though since I don't think Athena has anything to do with music. So inspired or not it still seems nonsensical to me.

Ok I think I know why Athena has the epithet

Her ending in Spanish is titled Mujer, mujer. So that's where the epithet comes from. I don't why it's titled that but it is. It doesn't seem to be a phrase that's brought up anywhere in the game outside of her ending.

After reading her SD dialogue in Spanish, I can say that plural thing is an English localization thing only. Or it's at least not present in the Spanish version. She still speaks strangely but no plural. So it'd be weird to reference that when it's absent in the Spanish version.

I think it might be something like a title. You know like lady gaga with lady being the title and gaga being the descriptor but instead of gaga it's lady lady? Idk, that's the way I see it now.

I've also made a small update to vanilla Nino's and vanilla Tharja's translations (since you haven't gotten that far yet). I might go back and clean up a few others to be a bit less stiff at some point. Rinea's "Dancer of Reminiscence", for example, could probably be "Reminiscing Dancer".

Yeah... the Captcha problem is annoying everyone in this forum. I took 1 hour to create the Voting Gauntlet Topic, something that is pretty fast to do.
