Luigi's Mansion 3: Post-Release

The game is out now to celebrate Halloween and I of course picked up my preordered copy as soon as GameStop opened!

I played for a couple hours and then had to go to class, then went to hand out candy for trick-or-treating and now I'm playing more. Long time fangirl of Luigi here and I've loved his ghost-capturing games since the first time I played the first game.

Who else is enjoying it so far? I'm loving it, of course! The slam attack is so much fun to use, as is the jump move. The hotel is full of cool details too. I'm so glad things like the Dark-Light Device and gem collecting are back too! I really liked collecting all the gems in LM2. And the Dark-Light Device provided a new way to explore things. We've got some more unique ghosts to catch too, just like in the first game. This game is taking all the best stuff from both, it looks like. Though I've yet to see the return of the elemental medals from LM1. I'd like to see those back too.

The story is simple but works, and one thing actually gave me a surprise. Luigi really does have to rescue everybody this time...

Spoiler

For the first time, Professor E. Gadd is trapped in a painting! You free him early in the game, but still. Also, he sure likes putting his Poltergusts under the hood of his car. lol

Also, even getting a game over is interesting. lol (I got beat by the first hammer ghost on my first attempt at it, it does a lot of damage with one hit)

Spoiler

You're taken to a screen where King Boo now has Luigi and E. Gadd in paintings and so he's victorious. Talk about really letting you know you've lost!

Only thing I'd like to say is that after this, the whole trapped in paintings thing is gonna be done enough. If a Luigi's Mansion 4 happens, I'd like to see King Boo do something different.

Loving it, too. The first half hour is a bit slow, but once you push through that, it's great. Gooigi's new mechanics are awesome:

Spoiler

Before getting him I had found some grates on the floor that I figured Luigi had to open somehow. Once I got Gooigi, I realized how to deal with them. It's rather clever, I think.

I stopped right when I got Gooigi. Loving it so far. My only nitpick is that the ghost designs are still cartoony for my tastes (I prefer the original ghost designs). I also don't like how there's no bio for the boss ghosts (at least to my knowledge).

Weird, I don't think the ghosts in the first game look any more or less cartoony than the ones in LM2 and LM3... But Mario characters in general are cartoony, so what else would you expect? xP

True. It's just my nostalgia honestly. I just like the original ghost designs more than the Dark Moon style.

I'm starting to find this game surprisingly very difficult... It wasn't too hard in the beginning, but the last couple of boss ghosts I fought had me overwhelmed.

I'm not exactly disappointed, as the first two LM games were kinda easy. It's nice to have a bit more of a challenge. But geez. I just got caught so off guard.

I noticed something neat about the gems though! Each set is themed to the floor that they're found on. That's a really cool touch.

I just beat it. I intend to continue playing for a while, though. I'm not the sort to 100% my games perfectly, but I want to get all the jewels, at the very least. Here, have a small review.

I love this game. The level of interactivity with the enviroment almost rivals that of a lego game. Not only are the areas beatifully crafted and themed, filled with props and items to play around with, but Luigi's own toolkit in this game is the best in the series, which only makes it more fun to explore. Uncovering hidden items, flashing crickets, breaking stuff, sending Gooigi on his own adventures, ruining rooms with the fart (shut up that's what it is)... I swear, I must've spent like half of my playtime just slamming garbage bins to the ground for no reason. It also helps that the game doesn't railroad you into any one direction like the second game did (although I did notice that the later floors were much more straightforward than the first few), and that there's plenty of stuff to find, be it cash, jewels, boos, hidden ghosts, even more rooms! Overall, exploring is really enjoyable.

As for the combat, although it's on the easy side, it is very satisfying and just plain fun. Using the ghosts themselves as weapons is brutal. Brutally satisfying. Nothing like watching them helplessly squirm, begging for mercy as they suffer a fate worse than death. Hwahahahahah... ahahahahahah...! A-ahem. Sorry. The bosses are great fun too, even challenging at times, not because of difficult attack patterns or anything like that, but due to the clever puzzles that need to be solved in order to harm them. My favourites were the musician, the hillbilly from the basement, the two final bosses and the Polterkitty, but I enjoyed all of them, really.

Ghost designs are on point. I'll be controversial and say that I enjoyed Dark Moon's goons a little more for the most part, but the big guys being squares is funny. The bosses are really good, maybe even on par with the original's. It's not an easy comparison, to be frank; the first game's bosses were a big family that, ahem, lived in the mansion. These guys are more disconnected, instead following the themes of their respective floors. They're different styles, and I dig both, myself.
I will admit, though, the DJ boss and her entourage made me cringe. Damn, they're way too 21st century for their own good.

This is probably the prettiest game on the console. The cutscenes are so well done, they feel like mini-movies, and the animations are absolutely godly, just like in the previous entries. Everything feels full of life, which is ironic, given there are exactly seven living characters in the game (and five of them spend most of the runtime in portraits). Even outside of cutscenes, there are so many little moments that break the monotony; like near the beginning, when escorting E. Gadd to the garage, a portrait randomly falls to the ground and startles Luigi. E. Gadd, the asshat, goes and laughs at him. That was not necessary, but I'm glad it exists. Things like that give the game character. And the ghosts are always up to all sorts of crazy antics, just like always.

Now, this game, like every game, has its share of flaws. The game's length, for one. It's better than one (nothing can be as bad as one), but if you just go straight for the bosses, this game can get really short. I did a bunch of exploring, and clocked out at the 11th hour. Not bad, but it could be better. I'll have to see how long it'll take me to get all the jewels and boos.  Personally, I think a few more floors wouldn't have hurt. I was definitely missing a snow themed floor, a chemical plant, a sky floor- heck, a mansion themed floor! This is Luigi's Mansion, but there isn't a floor that resembles a mansion! Still, what we got is plenty great.
Also, as fun as it is, the slamming mechanic really trivializes combat. You can just grab a single goon and ruin everybody simply by tapping A. I wonder what a challenge run, where slamming is forbidden except for when it's absolutely unavoidable, would be like. Without Dark Moon's broken dodge, I'd wager it'd get a lot more challenging. But slamming ghosts into one another is so much fun...

All in all, it's a worthy entry to the series, and a serious candidate for the best one of them. I'm not too sure, to be honest. I love all three games. They all have their flaws, their perks, but also their great positives that make all of them worth playing, in my humble opinion. Yes, even two. I love two too.

I believe this game did a great job at upping the stakes, by having everybody be captured instead of just Mario. Made it feel like the king meant business, this time around. Seriously, my heart sunk a little when I saw E. Gadd's portrait. I was wondering how he'd end up in the hotel-- I was not expecting it to be that (even though I probably should've, by all rights)!

However, that would only make it more disappointing if they used the same plot hook in the next game. I feel like they've already made the most out of the "King Boo wants living room decorations" storyline in this game. There's nowhere they could go from here that isn't down. They'll need to shake things up for the next title. But it's okay, I have faith in them. They clearly listened to the feedback from Dark Moon, after all!

Yeah, agreed. This is basically now I feel too. I don't get why anyone hated Dark Moon though. I absolutely loved it. My only issue with it was the boss ghosts being kinda underwhelming design-wise.

While I won't say I hated it, I did dislike Dark Moon. I found the mission structure to not really fit with Luigi's Mansion. To me, Luigi's Mansion is all about exploring the environment at your own pace with virtually no restrictions. That's what I loved about the first one. Luigi doing missions felt like they should have just kept going with the exploration. Having Luigi do a small task and then return to E. Gadd, and then go back felt like a chore. I also hated that all the boss ghosts were so similar in design, not the objects they inhibited though. I also liked the descriptions each ghost had in 1, it gave a boss ghost some backstory and personality. I'm a bit sad 3 doesn't have it. I'll admit I liked the super suck idea Dark Moon had over the slam. Scarescraper was also a fantastic idea to introduce since some fans might wanted to play with their friends.

Huh, I didn't feel like that with the mission system. I nearly 100%'d the game, all I missed was one gem in Treacherous Mansion. But how I feel won't be the same as others, of course. So I can understand there.

Why don't people like the slam? I think it's way more fun than the super suck.

It's fun, but it trivializes the combat so easily. Slamming into other ghosts is kinda broken tbh. Though, I will say it's fun to slam the Boos. Super suck feels like an upgrade to the combat of 1. That's just my opinion.

I see. I guess that could be true then. Oh well. xP

I finished the game recently. Collected every gem and captured every boos in each floor. Yet to capture a single rare ghost in multiplayer though.

Not as good as the original or even Dark Moon but I sure did enjoy it.

Very good game thanks to the multitude of tasks that can perform Luigi, and a perfectly adapted universe, the gameplay is constantly renewed and we never get tired. Whether solo, and maybe even more in cooperation, a real pleasure.

I've been loving this game. The animation and expression work is just amazing. I also like having more Mario characters in there, though I wonder why Daisy wasn't brought in. She's Luigi's girlfriend, for pete's sake! And the Tomb Suites would have been a good place for her painting, considering the first and most recognized kingdom of Sarasaland is the Birabuto Kingdom, based on Egypt.

Haven't finished it yet and am starting to get bored. First couple of hours were a blast but then it quickly starts to get repetitive and after the realization that all this money you suck up is worthless the charm is kinda gone imo. As clever as the construction of the game with the hotel setup is,  as tiring it becomes, especially when reaching B2. The first Luigi's Mansion might be short but I think that's good, since both sequels overstay their welcome after some time. So, yeah, the 3DS remake of LM1 is still king.

I've finally cleared the game myself! I'd put it down to play Pokemon Sword. And I'm not entirely through with Sword either. lol I only finished the main story there, not the Pokedex or anything.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this game and the ending was neat! I'll have to go back and collect more gems and Boos next time. I also have to say, the bosses got pretty dang challenging towards the end. I got beat a good few times. King Boo himself took me three tries.
