Which characters make sense to recruit in Silver Snow?

So I'm going to be playing Silver Snow soon and don't know the exact story but I do know that's it's church based and similiar to VW. I would like to recruit some characters outside of my house, but I would like those characters to make sense to join me lore-wise (Such as recruiting Lysithea in CF, for example Ingrid and Leonie would make no sense due to Leonie not wanting to aid people who helped kill jeralt and Ingrid is super loyal to Faerghus.) Who do you think would make sense to recruit story and lorewise?

I would say Marianne from Golden Deer and Mercedes from blue lion because they are quite the faithful ones. Maybe also Petra from Black Eagles as in CF Route the church tried to get Brigid on their side.

I just recruited Mercedes for Caspar’s paralogue (forgot to get Lysithea for Ferdinand’s so no relic for me...) Ashe and Lorenz so I can battle recruit them.

Picked up Marianne for her support with Ashe since I kept missing it in other runs... and Annette so she can be with her bestie.

Lorenz

Spoiler

Count Gloucester leans toward the empire, so I could see him joining the Black Eagles to keep relations up. Also his fellow Noble Ferdinand is there. Once the route split happens, I could see Lorenz siding with the church, especially on the premise that Edelgard wants to remove the concept of nobility.

Lysithea

Spoiler

She's a kindred spirit with Edelgard, what with the experiments and all. It makes sense in my mind for her to side with the church once she realizes that Edelgard is siding with the same people that ruined both their lives.

Leonie

Spoiler

Would make sense after the route split, since it's well established that Byleth would be opposing Edelgard and those who slither. Plus Jeralt was a knight of Seiros, and she did promise to protect Byleth after Jeralt dies.

Mercedes & Marianne

Spoiler

Both are devout followers of the church. Mercedes also gets that paralogue with Caspar if you care about that. You could also make a case for Annette and Hilda respectively as their best friends may want to tag along with them.

I think Ashe could make a lot of sense. Considering his whole story arc is about finding out the truth behind Lonato's rebellion and the western churches influences it would make a lot of sense for him to carry on with the central church as he tries to discover his true feelings about the whole conflict. Plus Catherine will be there so they can have their support chain which is pretty much needed for Ashe's storyline. Plus Gameplay-wise recruiting him gets you 'Falling Short of Heaven' as Black Eagles cannot recruit Catherine while the paralogue is still available, and that paralogue gives you the only pair of boots in the game.

Ashe and Lorenz both are faught as enemies in Silver Snow so i would say both of those fit as you can recruit them after said fight

Leonie maybe if you waited till after edelgard left and revealed her motives would make sense as she swears revenge for jeralt's death

Spoiler

In Black Eagle Route if the player encounters leonie she will say why they side with Jeralts killers and calls the player out for a traitor but considering you would be fighting for the church she would not think that in silver snow

Mercedes makes sense due to her faith as i would say annette would too considering their friendship together .

Marianne since she just disappears if you don't

Sylvain if A- Main Character is Female or B- if i recall Sylvain A ranks with Dorothea which is one of the few and personally just based on Dorothea alone i could see Sylvain joining even if main char was Male

Hannaman and Manuela as both are missible in theory (i recruited them the last month i was originally not going to recruit them in my black eagles run but i messed up and that became silver snow) but i think they are included in story cutscenes? so may as well pick them up too.

Lysithea and Merceds so you can have the paralogues of Ferdinand and Caspar which require them (F and C) to be traitors to Edelgard to function.

This will sound weird, but...none. Why would characters switch sides just to fight the same enemy? Imagine this exchange:

Ingrid: "Professor, I need to speak with you. Up until now I've been happy serving King Dimitri and fighting the empire, but now I think I should join you so that I can fight the empire."

It doesn't specifically have to be Ingrid, but regardless, it just seems silly to me. In WW2 you didn't have American, British and French soldiers randomly jumping between each other's armies. Why would it be different here?

Because Dimitri was thought to be dead, and Kingdom has cease to existed in reality.

Quote

In the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, Imperialist loyalist Cornelia has subdued all regions of the former royal house of Blaiddyd to prevent further revolt. Prince Dimitri has been sentenced. Now, the backbone of the former Kingdom–Houses Gautier and Fraldarius–struggle to continue the resistance. Cornelia–operating out of the royal palace–has accepted the support of the Empire to build an army and plots to wipe out all remaining Kingdom forces.

We have the hindsight knowing that he was hiding away fighting one man's war.

But in the game Cronelia made it like she had Dimitri executed, even Rodrigue was fooled. Except Gautier and Fraldarius, rest of kingdom has been occupied by Imperial proxy.

So for kingdom characters, their choice were either joining  Gautier, Fraldarius or Byleth. Byelth was the only one taking offensive rather the just fighting to survive.

Alliance characters are more tricky, they are more likely either from a pro-empire territory or that they were upset the Alliance wasn't taking active offensive against Empire but in a sitting war. Or that they simply believe in Byleth's cause

Since you brought out WW2 as example, I can offer counter argument here: Many allied personal fought for countries other than their own, either by official orders or volunteered.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Tigers

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Volunteer_Group

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Squadrons

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_volunteers

There are many reasons why someone choose to fight the same front in an allied country other than their own:

- It could be money, such as the in many case sof Flying Tigers, they were paid significantly better than US Army Airforce, with large bonus for every Japanese flight they shotdown

Quote

The group had contracts with salaries ranging from $250 a month for a mechanic to $750 for a squadron commander, roughly three times what they had been making in the U.S. forces.

- Sense of adventure, as seen in many people joining Légion étrangère today rather than their own nation (usually because their own nation hasn't join the war yet). Many citizen of Republic of Ireland joined UK army for this reason, since Ireland was officially neutral so they could only fight by joining UK force.

- Offer of citizenship: For example US provides fast track to citizenship for foreigner legally entered US, Légion étrangère offers the same to French citizenship after 5 years of service.

- Sense of justice, or believe in a cause: believe they are helping out a friendly nation in need, such as those Americans fighting in Spanish Civil War often view themselves as either defending socialism or fighting against fascism oversea. There were also some American volunteer in both Soviet and Chinese army

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Brigades

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_A._Carter_Jr.

(this guy fought first for Chinese, Spanish, then finally US Army, and awarded Medal of Honor for bravery)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauri_Törni

(One of the pioneer of modern US Army Special Forces, he greatly dislike communists, thus fought Soviets first in native Finnish army, then German army, joined US Army as an exile after WW2)

- Faster promotion: sometime foreign military offers faster promotion opportunity than their own military. Eagle Squadron is one of such, before US joinging the war USAAF was very small with obsolete equipment. Due to it's size, it has very high standard for recruits. UK on the other hand badly needs pilot, they would taken anyone who's generally health and speaks English.

Quote

These requirements, with the exception of the flight time, were not as strict as those required for service in the United States Army Air Corps, which was a reason for some of the pilots joining the squadron. Most Eagle Squadron pilots did not have a college education or prior military experience

Marquis de Lafayette joined Continental Army also partially because the position they offered him. On the reverse, many American officers served higher rank in foreign army such as generals after their retirement in the US.

- Their nations have been occupied or cease to be: This is most well known for Polish soldiers and some Czechs. Their nations have been overran by the enemy and could only join an allied national (usually UK or USSR) to continue the struggle. This is most likely reason for Kingdom character fighting for Byleth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Armed_Forces_in_the_West

- Better military: Sometimes allied foreign military offers much better military/training/equipment, thus better chance to survive in combat. I personally know a few guys leaving their home nation to join US military.

- Finally, they could be ordered by their nations to serve other nation in the official capacity. For example, in WW2, every Soviet or Chinese regiment using American weapon has American technicians assists in servicing these equipment since they were unfamiliar with American made tanks or airplane. They were some tens of thousands Americans served foreign nation in WW2 in this way.

I just recruited everyone. My playthrough is going really slow though, because I try to ensure that everyone is always at a certain level and promotion threshold.

Every Church member makes sense to stick around. The potential objections are Hanneman and Manuela, since both come from the Empire; but at the same time, they owe their present employment to the Church of Seiros, and are on good terms with most people there. Shamir and Alois can also go CF, but their only draw to the Empire is Byleth.

Don't let your precious students fight! Just have all the faculty + Flayn (I know she's a student but oh well someone has to fight) take care of the war.

If you have the DLC, you really could do a minimal student run. Just raise the class high enough to get through Chapter 13 "Reunion at Dawn" and then dump them for the rest of the game. This is one idea I have for a Silver Snow run, with my roster looking like this:

Spoiler

1. Byleth

2. Seteth

3. Alois

4. Catherine

5. Shamir

6. Cyril

7. Manuela

8. Hanneman

9. Anna

10. Yuri

11. Constance

12. Balthus

13. Hapi

14. Flayn

11-14 are on standby. They're former students, but not MY (except Flayn) students so they're free for grabs. Flayn is a dancer because she's the only one capable of becoming one here.

I feel that Felix is at least a somewhat fitting recruit in any path other than Blue Lions, considering his faith in Faerghus’s values is pretty low. Maybe better in Silver Snow and Verdant Wind because the Church and the Alliance are both neutral parties in the conflict between Faerghus and Adrestia.
