If Three Houses had a competitive mode...

If three houses had a competitive pseudo war game mode that you could play against other players:

same turn base gameplay as you'd expect but each phase no runs a timer which will automatically end the phase if it runs out even if you haven't moved all your pieces

like in hearthstone and similar games they'd be some mechanic deciding who gets first turn.

units for competitive play would be at the same average level and total weapon exp, thus each char "build" would be assumed at the same avarrage effort to create (making a flyer Dedue would limit the amount you could customize other characters, creating opportunity cost)

In such a situation what units available to the player currently  would be the best? How would player strategies change to account for the fact they're no longer facing dumb AI? Would it only reinforce flyer emblem or would counter builds finally put an end to it?

I think it would be similar to Fates, somehow. In which hyper offense wins. Or strategies with characters with high crit.

Battalions will just make things more interesting, what with gambits like Retribution, Impregnable Wall, and Sacred Shield.

I think it would make for partially very toxic gameplay unless both players receive meaningful objectives other than "kill every last one of them"

Potential strategies:

  • Rushing in with a strong Sniper or Grappler, ORKOing an enemy unit with your class combat art und then Rescue'ing your unit back to your lines
  • Stride and Impregnable Wall become must have batallions to prevent the enemy from getting the first strike and to safely engage
  • Restore receives massive value to allow your units to still move after getting hit by an offensive gambit
