So Trump dipshit of dipshits is insisting that his signature appear at the bottom of all the relief checks going out.  That is our fucking tax dollars it isn't coming from his pocket, but people especially ones that are really struggling financially are going to think Trump saved them with his own money or whatever.  He is a rich man after all!

He's taken millions of dollars of tax money to his properties and now he is going to fool a bunch of people into thinking he is the one paying out these relief checks and get a big political push.

Hopefully, he gets voted out if his incompetence continues and cause shit to hit the fan.

Look, if you're going to be outraged over something this political, you're in the wrong thread.

@XRay if Thursday was any indication, that's iffy.  70 citations for people who violated the lockdown in one day.

I think the honor system is fine. If I go outside right now, the cops are not going to stop me and question what I am doing, as long as I am not doing something dumb like hosting a party or something. I have faith that the average American is civilized enough to follow instructions and take care of themselves and their community.

This is partially a matter of culture. In Asia, even if their medical staff does not have enough face masks, you will be reprimanded for not wearing a face mask in public if you are a civilian.

If the mask does not actually offer some form of protection, then the medical community would not need them.

As long as the person is not hoarding masks. I would leave the decision of whether the person should buy and use a mask up to themselves. The CDC and WHO recommends no mask if you are healthy and not working with the elderly and health compromised people, while Asian countries who took the brunt of the outbreak advocate more people wearing them.

First off, honor system quarantines are being ignored with some regularity.

Second, wrt the face masks. Healthcare personnel and first responders need those masks because they're likely to be up close, dealing with infected people. You're not. You're someone who should be sitting at home as much as possible, washing your hands and staying 6 feet away from anyone who doesn't live with you. As long as you do that, the chance of you catching the disease is very small. Wearing a mask isn't going to change that for you. Furthermore, if you are infected but asymptomatic or not sneezing, coughing, atrophied, fevered or similar you're not a particular risk to anyone as long as you do aforementioned things.

Regardless of your yammering about Asian countries and cultural differences, the bottom line is that there's a dramatic shortage protective equipment for people who are actually at risk. People like you and me, who really aren't at risk shouldn't be wasting precious resources for marginal at best effect.

If Asian countries who took the brunt of the impact are recommending face masksdespite facing shortages themselves, then I think there is some weight to their advice. COVID-19 also is not their only experience with disease before, and they have more experience with diseases like this first hand, such as SARS.

The stigmatization also goes both ways. There are better things to publicly shame people for, and facemasks is not one of them as long as the person is not hoarding them.

Wearing masks is 100% something to shame people over right now.

I'm going to disagree here.  Yes, the coronavirus is the big thing now, but it doesn't mean that other diseases suddenly disappeared.  If you're coughing, it's much better to keep that to yourself.  The common cold still sucks, even if it's nowhere near as headline-grabbing.

Asian countries could just as easily shame the WHO and CDC and say those two organizations are absolutely stupid for not promoting the use of facemasks for everyone. Asian countries are also the ones who got hit with flu like diseases the most with SARS and now COVID-19, so from their view, it makes no sense to ignore their advice since they are societies with the most experience in handling this stuff.

Their are better things to shame people for, and arguing about masks is unproductive unless the person is a hoarder or something.

It's not about whether masks offer some protection; it's about the fact that ordinary people using them are unlikely to use them in a manner that gives them that protection. Culture is absolutely irrelevant.

As I said earlier, if a healthcare professional gets sick, it weakens the ability of the healthcare system to deal with other patients. They should therefore have top priority for any PPE. When there's a shortage of PPE, it is extremely irresponsible to take that away from people who actually need it.

I was slightly wrong before when I said only to wear them if you have COVID-19. You should wear them if you are coughing or sneezing, too, since that's the main method of transmission. Just remember to use and dispose of them properly.

I agree with @eclipse, too: it's not right to shame people for using masks, because you don't know if they're sick. I think it's fair to shame people for spreading misinformation about when you should use them, though.

EDIT: If there was infinite supply, masks probably would be recommended for everyone, along with training videos on how to wear and dispose of them. There is not. Social distancing and hand washing are two things everyone can do without preventing people who need it more from doing it; thus, they are recommended for everyone.

I have two disposable masks which I bought prior to the quarantine which I'm trying to milk for as much as I can use them. I always wear them when I go out for groceries or to the pharmacy (I live alone and sometimes leaving the house is inevitable, even while working at home). I feel no shame for wearing them when I go out, because I feel that's the absolute minimum I should do when going out to the public. I also have enough soap and cleaning materials for a couple of months. I don't consider any of that hoarding, just basic precautions.

I got a few dozen masks and I only been leaving the house like once a week for grocery runs for the past two weeks now.So yeah—masked up every time I leave the house, and can keep that going for months if I need to.

I was at three different airports last week (which are going to be some of the most infectious places outside of hospitals). Wearing masks on the flight was mandatory. A random stranger gave me two of them because he saw I wasn't wearing one (that was in Australia). For the next week at the very least I'm going to damn well make sure I'm going to wear a mask whenever I'm out in public (it being hay fever season means that's doubly so). Anyone who's been through a hospital or airport recently absolutely should imo. Doesn't mean hoarding a hundred of them, we shouldn't even be going out in public enough to even need that many. Those of us who aren't healthcare professionals also stand risk of contracting the disease.

Allegedly this is still a first world country. Sure doesn’t feel like one when the only way to get medical face masks is to have your Taiwanese brother-in-law bring them in from an international flight (He got back from work in Colombia and was just like here. Have a box of them. No shortage there). Obligatory reminder that Project Runway Winner Christian Siriano was able to retool his workshop to produce face masks instead of designer brand clothes + high fashion. And that if we had competent leadership in the White House right now, we could have used the defense production act to do that throughout the entire industry weeks ago.

Keeping in mind I'm in the serious discussion section I say this not in a joking manner, but for us to pause and contemplate something. Here it goes.

Leaders in the porn industry across multiple sites like Pornhub, Fakku, and so forth are actually trying to encourage people to stay home. It's on various ads as well as crowbarred into the side panels of the websites. Furthermore they are offering free subscriptions during this situation that is unfolding. Think about that. People whose sole job is to sell sex and porn are rising up to make a contribution in the name of keeping people safe by telling them to stay home and masturbate. I mean, I get it isn't like these business officials are doing it completely 100% in good faith and that their is some kind of benefit, but wow. This has such long reaching effects that even industries you wouldn't think would even be touched by Covid19, are actually reflecting the change in behaviors and patterns of the consumers.

After seeing a few ads with the offers talking about sign up now, and pornhub even having a box where you have to check off TWICE that you understand you need to play your part in social distancing and wash your hands, I can honestly say I'm amused. Like wow ya know. A porn site is telling me to be safe and not go get infected and die on them. Sites like Fakku must really value their customers. It's either that, or I'm missing the real motive and intent behind these decisions.  I am thoroughly impressed.

If there's a profit motive to it, it is likely that they anticipate some of the people using what is currently free but normally premium will pay to go back to the "premium" stuff after things are back to normal.

On the rare occasion I go out these days, I'm not seeing people wearing masks at all here in Austin Texas.

I see a few other people (mostly Asians) wearing them at the grocery store and saw one guy using a bandana as a homemade substitute, but most people even in New Jersey (as hard as we’re gettubc hit) aren’t trying to cover their face with anything.

I have read of porn sites doing stuff for good charities before. It tends not to work out in the long run, because few charities want to be associated with adult entertainment.

As bad as the US is getting, at least the president is in a state of constant vacillation concerning Coronavirus. It sounds like Brazil is going to have to pray to God and Pedro II if they want to get through this remotely unscathed. It's president Jair Bolsonaro dismisses it as a mere cold, and refuses to shut down the economy at all over it, even though he declares people will die of it -but man up because we all die eventually. It's possibly how Trump would behave if the institutions of government didn't exert any measure of restrain on him. We're relatively fortunate.

PornHub flexing better leadership and judgement in a crisis then a sitting president. Crazy times.

Good for PR, and possibly profit too down the line. It is like there are good and ethical ways to make money off of a bad situation that Trump does not seen to understand. Throwing others under the bus, not paying people back, bribery, diverting taxpayer money to his own businesses, etc. are pretty unnecessary dick moves.

Well, I hope Brazil's self sacrifice being the control of the experiment would not be in vain, cause the rest of the world can see the full extent of what would happen if the government does nothing. Brazil's population is much younger than the US though, so hopefully they are less affected by the virus.

Really value potential future customers more like it I'd say.

Australia has the advantage of being about 1-2 weeks behind everyone else and have already introduced some tough restrictions and lockdown policies. Our infection rates have started to decrease but I'm worried this is just the lull before the storm, especially considering how appalling airport health regulations are right now
