Three Houses Headcanons

Three Houses has been out for a while now, so now's the time for another headcanon thread. My tendency to make long, rambling headcanons continues! This ended up being longer than I expected...

Anyway, I divided my writings into parts:

Was Rhea always the Archbishop?

Whenever Rhea wasn’t acting as Archbishop, she often placed her intended Sothis vessel in charge of the Church, though she still kept herself in an influential position. The vessels were created by “growing” a body around Sothis’s Crest Stone. Bodies created from only Nabatean genes were unstable, but bodies created from a combination of Nabatean and human genes developed successfully. As such, they possess characteristics of both species. The results weren’t always completely healthy, hence Sitri’s frailty, but most of them were healthy enough to serve as Archbishop. Once they died, Rhea would take the position again and try to create another vessel. One vessel instead became an opera performer famous for portraying Seiros herself (Rhea normally doesn’t think much of the actresses playing her, but she was very proud in this instance). On the rare occasions when neither Rhea or one of her vessels was Archbishop, she had one of her cardinals take the position.

Jeralt's Backstory

Jeralt Reus Eisner was born to a minor noble house in western Fódlan during the eleventh century of the Imperial Calendar, but he lost most of his family in a fire when he was still young. Rather than taking control of his house, Jeralt opted to dissolve it and become a soldier for Faerghus. He was tasked with escorting the Archbishop shortly after, and he was rewarded with her Crest after he saved her life.

Though Jeralt initially accepted Rhea’s offer to join the Knights of Seiros, he soon found that his Crest made him age much more slowly. Since his young age meant that this would be very obvious after a few years, he decided to journey across Fódlan as a mercenary to expand his horizons. Jeralt would travel as a wandering soldier for about a century, and Rhea invited him to serve as a Knight of Seiros once again after she returned to being Archbishop in the twelfth century (she claimed that her longevity was a result of her Crest and a blessing from the goddess). Since his lack of aging was now less obvious, Jeralt accepted.

Though Jeralt rejoined the knights around the time Sitri was born, he never interacted with her much until she was a teenager. Sitri developed a crush on the knight after listening to his stories and did favors for him out of appreciation. Jeralt developed the habit of giving Sitri flowers as thanks, and soon he fell in love with her in return. The age difference between them made Jeralt uncertain about acting on his feelings (and he avoided close relationships before as a result), but Rhea was aware of their mutual attraction and encouraged him to romance Sitri if it made them both happy.

The Four Apostles

The Four Apostles are all humans that earned Seiros’s favor in some fashion. Besides Aubin, they received their Crests as gifts from Seiros in the hopes of using them to perform the Rite of Rising.

Aubin was originally one of Nemesis’s allies who defected once he realized that the weapons he granted were made of bones (the Fetters of Dromi, meanwhile, stayed in the possession of his clan, and they were brought to Dagda once the war neared its end). Once the War of Heroes began, he informed Seiros of his pact with Nemesis, how he received his Crest, and the existence of the Heroes’ Relics. Seiros forgave him for briefly allying with Nemesis and accepted him as an ally, though Aubin did not participate in the fighting himself.

Chevalier was an Adrestian knight and one of Seiros’s most loyal allies during the War of Heroes. He was injured near the end of the war and was given his Crest as a reward for his service. The Altered Golems fought at the end of Crimson Flower are named after him and Seiros’s other allies from the War of Heroes. The source of his Crest happened to mentor Macuil in the art of blacksmithing, which is why his Crest is on some of the sacred weapons.

Noa was Macuil’s protégée in the arts of magic, being one of the few humans who he took a liking to. Following Macuil’s departure for Sreng, she adopted his role of teaching magic to others. Her Crest was granted to amplify her existing magical skill. Her relationship with Macuil is partially why she passed off her Crest as his.

Timotheos, the last of the Apostles to be granted his Crest, was an astrologer and an architect who helped construct Garreg Mach. As time went on, he filled the position of Seiros’s assistant, similar to how Seteth would be Rhea’s assistant later.

Following the Rite of Rising, Seiros allowed the Apostles to keep their respective Crest Stones (again, besides Aubin). Chevalier's Crest Stone was used to create Vajra-Mushti (forged from the bones of Demonic Beasts), while the Crest Stones of Noa and Timotheos were stolen by those who slither in the dark.

Headcanons that slither in the dark

Fortunately for the people of Fódlan, javelins of light can’t be used willy-nilly because the Agarthans don’t have the resources to make more than they already have. To ensure that their uses are conserved, only the leader of the Agarthans (Thales in the present) knows the spell to activate them, and the spell can only be performed in Shambhala. There are documents detailing how the spell works, but they are kept strictly hidden unless the previous leader dies without passing it down, in which case a new leader is chosen and given access to the secrets. They don’t want some apprentice mage to use them all at once, after all. The Agarthans also use their technology to augment their bodies; this is the "secret of their bodies" that Thales alluded to.

Solon was placed in charge of the Crest experiments on House Ordelia. Once it was confirmed that implanting two Crests in a person is possible, Thales summoned the Crest research mages to Enbarr for the experiments on House Hresvelg (the official story was that the royals were all died from a deadly disease, and that Edelgard’s hair color change was a side effect of the disease). With his job done, Solon returned to Shambhala to record the data he collected until he learned that Flayn began living at Garreg Mach in 1179. Solon adopted Tomas’s identity (who was killed following his return to House Ordelia in 1172) to gain access to Flayn, Garreg Mach’s library, and Abyss’s library. After obtaining Flayn’s blood and planting Kronya as a spy, Solon used the blood to create a magic poison that was tested on the citizens of Remire Village.

Following their deaths, the bodies of Nemesis and the 10 Elites were collected by the Agarthans, though it took several centuries for them all to be found (their blood was still powerful and was used for the experiments on Houses Ordelia and Hresvelg). Following their retrieval, copies of their Heroes’ Relics were constructed from Agarthium; the Dark Creator Sword is powered by the Crest Stones of Noa and Timeotheos, while the rest use artificial Crest Stones created during the timeskip. As the Agarthans never obtained Maurice’s body (as he was still alive as the Wandering Beast), the copy of Blutgang was broken down and used to construct Aymr instead. Thales’s plan was to revive Nemesis and the Elites, with a combination of the Crest of Flames and dark magic, as a last resort against the people of Fódlan, in the event that Edelgard was defeated before fulfilling their goals.

More on the Saints and Nabateans

Due to Fódlan's turbulent history, the Nabateans created by Sothis can be divided into "generations." The first generation Nabateans were created before Sothis’s conflict with the Agarthans, and the second generation Nabateans were created after. Indech, Cichol, Macuil, and Rhea (created in that order) are all second generation, and as such they don’t know much about the world was before the Agarthan conflict. Most of the first generation was killed in the conflict, so much of the knowledge from that time was lost even to the Nabateans. Cethleann, being born after Sothis went to sleep, is currently the only third generation Nabatean.

The first of the second generation Nabateans were the originators of the Crests given to the Four Apostles. They were created by Sothis with the intention of using their Crests along with the Chalice of Beginnings to revive those killed during the Agarthan conflict. However, Sothis soon realized that reviving so many lives would require killing them, so she relented and instead opted to restore the land herself. These Nabateans were killed alongside the rest at Zanado, and one of them was used to create the Fetters of Dromi and the Crest of Aubin. Seiros preserved the blood of the other three in the hopes of eventually performing the Rite of Rising herself.

Though most Nabateans did not encourage humans to worship them, some human settlements built churches to honor them anyway. Cichol met and fell in love with a woman in an Enbarr church, after she was forced out of her home of Rhodos Coast due to instability caused by Nemesis (she is another namesake for one of Rhea’s Altered Golems). They and their daughter, Cethleann, enjoyed visiting Rhodos Coast during times of stability.

As for the other two Saints, Indech was a rugged manly man who was Dedue-tier in height, while Macuil was a pretty boy around Cichol’s height. Macuil also had luxurious long hair and Cethleann often asked him for hair-care tips. Following the Battle of Tailtean that resulted in Nemesis’s death and Cethleann and Cichol going into isolation, Seiros and Macuil argued on what to do with the Elites and their families (Macuil wanted to kill them all, Seiros wanted to spare the families). Not wanting to be involved and saddened by the departure of Cichol and Cethleann, Indech went into hiding at Lake Teutates, with Macuil leaving Fódlan for Sreng shortly after.

Additionally, while the source of the Crest of Ernest is unknown even to Rhea, legend has it that "Saint" Ernest is an immortal trickster who helps and harms people seemingly at random. It is said that Ernest grants his Crest to people who catch his interest, but nobody can agree on if his Crest is supposed to be a blessing or a curse. This version of Ernest is an apocryphal figure with no support from the Church’s writings, but the legend is the most popular story about the mysterious Crest.

What's up with Anselma/Patricia in the Kingdom?

We don’t know the circumstances behind Anselma’s exile from Adrestia, but it seems to have been before the Insurrection of the Seven since she basically raised Dimitri and Edelgard doesn't remember her much. At some point after 1167, Duke Aegir thought Anselma was pretty hot and tried to use some of his noble Aegir charisma on her, but she was unimpressed and rejected his advances. Feeling offended, Duke Aegir used his connections to accuse her of being a sympathizer to the Hrym insurrection, though her relationship with Ionius meant that she was exiled from the Empire instead of receiving a worse punishment. Hearing about Anselma’s predicament, her “friend” Cornelia invited her to Fhirdiad and introduced her to Lambert.

When Lord Arundel and Edelgard ended up in Faerghus, the latter was passed off as a relative of the former named Edelgard von Arundel. The names of Ionius’s children were not common knowledge, and since Edelgard was sheltered she didn’t bother using an alias. Lambert eventually learned that she was an Imperial princess, but was forced to keep quiet about it for her protection. Patricia never learned that her brother and daughter were ever in Fhirdiad, and they never learned about her either. Edelgard came to believe that her mother died in some obscure town, and that Dimitri's accusations of her killing her mother were just him being delusional.

Lastly, Edelgard and Dimitri almost kissed once when they were in Faerghus, but they both found it very awkward and agreed to never talk about it again.

 

[Etrurian emperor]

I like to imagine that Dedue is responsible for Dimitri's awful hairstyle. Whenever we see Dimitri as a child he has these long blonde hairs that make him look like a complete girl. Tired of having his new lord constantly snickered at Dedue took some scissors to ''help'' Dimitri. He's just not good at it. Once Dedue is done people no longer snicker at Dimitri because he has the hairs of a girl. They now snicker because Dimitri has the hair of a mop.

Here are a few of mines

Rhea and Wilihelm:

Rhea was possibly the first queen of Adrestian Empire as spouse of Wilihelm the Great. Both Church official history and the forbidden novel claimed so.

It makes total logical sense to me since they had mutual benefits for each other: Rhea needed an army to avenge for Sothis, while she could grant Wilhelm a mate, a future heir, superhuman power, long life, and most importantly a legitimacy to rule, which is important in the ancient world. (Rhea is also considered one of most beautiful female in the game, even by Sylvain and Lorenz, then there is the student suitor quest...)

All great dynasty fathers in the real world created some kind personal cult/founding myth to justify their ruling: Alexander the Great claims he's ancestor was Hercules thus divine; Caesar claims his ancestor was Julus, son of the legendary Trojan prince Aeneas, supposedly the son of the goddess Venus; Octavius followed the same lineage and great heir of Caesar; Constantine the Great claims he was visited by Jesus Christ, Emperors of Japan traced their lineage to Emperor Jimmu who claimed to be son of Amaterasu

...and Wilhelm Paul Hresvelg has Seiros (Rhea).

Wilihelm was not one of the elites, so he's probably not a leading figure before Seiros showed up. He was at best a warlord but no claim to the throne. By marrying Saint Seiros, he now could claim kinship not just to the great Saint, but to Sothis the Goddess as well, allowing him to justify his dynasty with divine right to rule.

This would also explains why female crown of the empire (used by Edelgard) looks so much like Immaculate One, because it was Rhea's back in the day.

 

Jeralt:

Spoiler

- The relationship between Jeralt and Rhea must be very deep if not romantic at some point:

For over 1200 years, Jeralt was the only person known to have Major Crest of Seiros (Not even Wilihelm's crest was confirmed). All the Cardinals only got minor crests. Interestingly, while Rhea and Seteth address Alferic and other minor crest holder as "children of Rhea", she never address Jeralt (or Wilihelm) as such, making him even more standout.

In the opening there were soldiers blocking attack for Rhea, they didn't seem to get blood from her, so why only Jeralt? Rhea is quick to carry out harsh punishment for traitors, but instead of punishing Jeralt, she even promoted him back to the captain of KoS despite knowing well he set the fire 20 years ago while lying in front of her face, without even testing his loyalty. There must be something really special about Jeralt.

- Jeralt Reus Eisner might not even be his real name.

For all we know, Jeralt was at least 120 years old, but he never specific how old he really is. He told Alois that Rhea's blood literally stop his aging. He mentioned about ancient great war in the opening (implied to be War of Eagle and Lion), he could just be well versed in history, or that he was actually alive 300 years ago. Like Rhea, he might have switched many identities over the years to hide his secret. Especially being the captain, he must have more interaction with public and rank soldiers than the Archbishop.

TWISTD, Demonic Beasts, and Sothis

The true cause of ancient war might have to do with inhumane experiments on artificial creation of crests by Agarthans

In the Agarthans version of story, Sothis declared war against them to defend "beasts". The beasts here are likely not actually animal but other humans. In the game TWISTD called Fodlanian as beasts multiple times, implying they consider other humans as subhuman.

One thing that struck me was how Sothis actually has knowledge of fighting demonic beasts (even Byleth could question here this when fighting Miklan, but she would not answer). This implies that she has fought them before, and most likely during the ancient war against Agarthans.

Combined this, the "beasts", and Agarthans using artificial crest stones (dark stone), my headcanon here is that

"In the ancient time Agarthans desire the power of dragons, so they used technology to create artificial crest stones, then they conducted human experiments by using other humans they considered sub-humans, and created many demonic beasts and other monsters. Either one or both acts were intolerable by Sothis thus the war began between the two. Sothis fought many demonic beasts in the past thus knows well about their weakness."

I'll share some Sylvain headcanons since he's my favorite and I love him a lot. ❤️

- Sylvain's kind of like Frederick as a father, overprotective (especially of his daughters), but sweet and quite doting. It IS confirmed that he dotes on his kids, but not to what degree. That's all we really know about how he is as a dad. Also, I like to think he has more daughters than sons because I just find that idea amusing. lol

- Unfortunately, he also winds up cleaning up more of his brother's messes even after Miklan is dead and TH's story is over. I don't think poor Sylvain's seen the last of his brother's bad influences and deeds. Sylvain finds Miklan fathered a son with some poor girl he roped into his thief club and has to help the boy after he mistakes Sylvain for his father.

- Also, at least once, Sylvain is framed for cheating on his wife and he has to clear his name because his past makes it easy to set him up for such a terrible thing. Either some girl who his parents might've considered arranging him to marry did it, or girls he might have dumped in the past want revenge. Ingrid did say Sylvain's behavior could come back to bite him and I believe it did.

- When Sylvain becomes Margrave Gautier, he hates that guys who cheat are nicknamed "Sons of Gautier" and just wants the past to be the past already. Still, he's thankful for the respect he does still get for how he leads his people, and he's regarded as the best leader Gautier's had in a long time. 🙂

As far as Seiros and Wilhelm are concerned I view them a little differently then most. 

The idea of them having been an item seems pretty popular. I prefer the scenario of Wilhelm being a more fatherly figure for her who took in a grieving and slightly feral Seiros, sheltered her and protected her. Rhea does tell Edelgard that her ancestor ''saved'' her and if the Adrestian Emperors really were related to Seiros, the most holy figure in Fodlan they'd have shouted it from the rooftops. I'd say more points to them not being romantically involved.

To add to the Macuil part of your headcanon @Lightchao42, one of the key moments in Macuil becoming disgusted with humanity was, amongst many of his brethren dying, seeing a loved one be murdered in the war against Nemesis. When that Nabatean was later turned into Failnaught, to be used by Riegan, that rubbed salt in the wound, and is the reason why Macuil took the Sword of Begalta with him to Sreng - as a reminder of that person.

• Kronya is actually Monica and the Von Ochs house was Agatharian run (they mixed in with normal people over time so they actually are less visible), and based on this, I can safely hc that she's a little bit older than Cethleann but not as old as the other 3 Saints
• Their technology was actually meant to put less strain on Sothis, in order to thank her but it fucked up bc someone killed some innocents and it all went to shit
• Sothis actually does have her own preferences that don't align with Byleth, including an extreme obsession with Guac

Bernadetta's dialogue during Chapter 6 has her wonder where Flayn's room is, so I headcanon that she's Seteth's roommate. That is, Seteth moved a second bed into his room after she started living at Garreg Mach. Flayn would rather get her own room near the students, but Seteth doesn't trust them around her. We see that Jeritza's room is in the knights quarters, even though he's a teacher and not a Knight of Seiros, so Hanneman and Manuela's rooms are probably around there too. Since he's Rhea's assistant, Seteth's (and Flayn's) room might be on the second or third floor. Lord Arundel stays in Garreg Mach for some time according to his conversation with Dimitri, so I wonder where the guest rooms are...

The sauna building also doubles as a bathhouse, with separate compartments for men and women. The baths have stalls around them so bathers can have their privacy, but Bernadetta still wakes up early so she can wash herself before anyone else gets there. Rhea has her own bathroom on the third floor and Seteth has Flayn wash there instead. Though Rhea is normally wary of technological advancement, she was merciful enough to allow the invention of plumbing.

Jeritza definitely got hit on by Manuela shortly after he started working at the Officers Academy. He's been mildly intimidated by her since then.

If Female Byleth marries Ashe, they leave three of the seats in the front row of the cathedral empty out of respect for Geralt, Christophe, and Lonato during their wedding. At the ceremony, Dorothea and Caspar were delighted to discover that rumors of Linhardt surviving the Battle of Fort Merceus were indeed true when he attended.

Lastly, "the queen" Dimitri marries in his and Felix's ending (at least in my playthrough) is Marianne.

There is a completely unused east wing section of Garreg Mach, including several bedrooms and two towers.

The path leading to the east wing is blocked by a tree next to the graveyard.

 

I was expecting they would open this section, and the gate blocked by a solider next to Cathedral in DLC, yet turned out they never used these sections.

Sacred weapons are forged by adding the blood of a Nabatean to metal blessed by Sothis (Mythril). Sothis originally created Mythril for general use, but its toughness and power meant it would end up being smelted down for weapons and hoarded. Making sacred weapons is a pretty exhausting process, and only the Nabateans most committed to helping/being involved with humanity (Seiros and Cichol) bothered to make two of them. Cichol, however, gave up war when he buried his wife, and gives away his shield to his dead wife's family (where it eventually drifts into Hrym territory). It was only the inner circle of Seiros who were allowed to have sacred weapons at all (the Four Saints, and the Nabateans killed by Riegan, Fraldarius, Gloucester and Lamine) - most of the Nabateans weren't fighters and didn't have their own weapons anyway.

The regalia weapons were created from leftover Mythril discovered here and there, and combined with normal metals (which is why these rust, but the sacred weapons do not). The Blessed Lance/Bow have monster effectiveness due to being separately blessed by white magic - they were originally created by the Church with the Mythril they had as an exclusive resource to make nobles reliant on them for help in killing monsters, and are normally kept locked away in Garreg Mach. 

The process of creating Agarthium involves dark magic, and is what gives it a purplish dark miasma - it is discovered that without stabilising the material with Crest technology, this miasma harms its user over time (where the Devil Sword and Axe come from). They discover, however, that by decreasing the proportion of Agarthium used in forging (thus lightening the weapon) it can be made safe to handle. Experiments on this first created the prototype Crescent Sickles, and then eventually the more refined Scythe of Sariel.

He's one of the humans but due to the conflict at the time, they never told him

I headcanon that all non romantic endings happen even if I didn’t see them, but only one romantic one does of course. 
 

Dedue is Dimitri’s royal retainer, who is also working with Mercedes at an orphanage  

Felix is his shield 

but Felix is also a noble, and he and Sylvain are the best of friends in their territories. 

Felix And Anette teach at the academy for sword-classes and magic classes for 2 months out of the year until Felix gives the title to his son, and becomes a full time Blue Lions teacher  

Sylvain is with Ingrid who is a knight for Dimitri, which leads to a lot of friendly reunions. 
ingrid and ashe were Dimitri’s first official knights, trained by Catherine. 
 

Dimtri is romantically involved with Marianne, and Hapi’s ending where they hunt and kill TWSITD is a group event (All 8 BL, Hapi, And Byleth snd Shamir go!) 

Hapi ends up with Ashe and has her teatime with Dimitri as Ashe lives near him. 
 

Byleth reforms the church greatly, ensuring they aren’t based around secrets and fear. Byleth married Shamir (both grew up as mercenaries and are the strong silent type. I can’t help but love it even more than I love FemByleth) 

actually I thought kind of a lot about the future of this version of Fodland hehe

Byleth and Flyan have twins that their Grandpa Seteth and step-grandma Manuela love and spoil

Holst have mixed feelings about Claude marrying Hilda, with she becoming Almyra's second Demon Queen

Yuri's children with Bernadetta helped her overcoming the trauma her father instaled on her, and reconciled with her mother,

Dedue rebuilds Duscar with Byleth's blessings, and his firstborn is Named Dimitri

Petra and Caspar are a very happy couple and their child is the first person in Bridigd to bare a Crest

Mercedes, Sylvain, Constance and Ferdinand became a very close after their double marriage (Mercedes and Sylvain, Constance and Ferdinad)

Balthus was both Hilda's and Lysitia's best man

Balthus and Hapi's children were known pranksters during their time at the Officer's Accademy

Lhysitia married Lhindhart, and made sure to treat his chronic fatigue

Lorenz married Marianne, and she helped him clear his father name about the death of Claude's uncle

Ingrid ans Ashe had a couple children, their first son was Named Cristophe Glen

Why do you have to take a certification exam to promote? It's simple, really - the Seal itself is a kind of puzzle. Each one contains power to reclass (and get the appropriate skills), but it's gated behind questions that test whether you can wield such skills responsibly. Knowing the proper way of striking with a lance, or how to ride safely, help you answer the questions to become a Paladin, for instance. I'm thinking of the seal as having buttons, that you press or don't according to the relevant answers, like a Scantron. And if you fail the exam, the power contained within escapes into the aether, rendering the Seal useless.

During her imprisonment in Enbarr, what stops Rhea from transforming into a dragon? And why was she kept naked?

 

My headcanon is that Nabatean like other Fire Emblem dragons, also requires a dragon stone like medium to transform between shapes. Edelgard might not know exactly what allows Rhea to transform so they just strip her belongs to prevent it, it's likely not so obvious as a dragonstone in Awakening, but that pendant she's always wearing except during imprisonment.

My theory is based on the obscure conversation between Byleth, Seteth and Flayn in Silver Snow Chapter 13-14

What could be so important for Flayn and Seteth that he allows Flayn to sneak behind enemy lines? Consider Flayn never denies her ability to transform, it makes me to conclude she must have hid her "dragonstone" inside the casket she used in the past.
