Okay, I'm sorry for being so persistent, but I need closure on this. The site's loading issues are getting worse and worse, and it keeps sending me to this screen that says that the host is down, not me. And yet, I see nobody else mentioning anything of the sort. Is it just me, or is the site falling apart for everyone? Please, do let me know.

I think it's definitely on your end.

I'm not having any issues, in all honesty. Sorry it's giving you issues.

no issues here either

Right, thanks. I'm on my phone now, works okay here. No idea what's up with my computer... I mean, every other website and every other application works all right. It's just Serenes that's been flipping out all day. Weird.

Anyway.

Alright i gotta respect this, you're committed to the character.

I mean, I am rather proud of it, it came out great.

...though it rather annoys me, because now that I've let my hair grow long it no longer looks like me. Meh.

Everything about him screams recruitable and then he just.....isn't.

Kaga pulls a few of those in Vestaria, yeah. I like it, it paints enemies in a different light.

Ufotable is doing the cutscenes for Tales of Arise? Dope.

Yeah, they have been for a while. Ever since Zestiria, i think.

I only noticed this one example, what are the other ones?

Actually, i may recall some named enemy units protecting some houses in Ch......i forget the chapter. But the only one you can recruit in that chapter is the Est of the game and that's assuming you met the requirements (which, tbf, you can only fail to meet those requirements if you're a dick).

No problems on my end. A late response but a response nonetheless.

For instance, there's the guys in the chapter where you escort Athol. Two brothers vying for the attention of a female knight. They're given a Johan/Johalvier sorta setup in their character bios. Then all three of them die.

Also, there's a shitton of thieves and bandits with names, faces and funny dialogue. I think it's neat. FE should do it more often.

...then again, Three Houses already struggles to have a boss or two per chapter and has to resort to reusing Hubert and the DK 10 times each, so perhaps it's for the best not to ask it of them... Not even trying to be a dick this time, it's just a shame that they don't have the budget or the time for little stuff like this, but an old retired guy can pull it off...

This must've been post route-split because i don't remember this.

You say this but Kaga didn't do it until Vestaria either.

SRPGs in general don't bother giving character to units unless they are

  • Playable
  • Bosses
  • Important NPCs

Valkyria Chronicles has named enemy units whose sole purpose is to be killed so that the enemy phase has less actions (they are commander units, less commanders=less CP to use). Said named enemy units don't have portraits like playables and bosses do.

Reminds me that's basically one of SRW's shticks.

SRW 4 is notorious for having a map with like over twenty named characters.

Uh, Berwick Saga got like a million mini bosses.

I played a total of six maps (first two chapters+their side stories).

Also the difference is that in Berwick, it was obvious they were bosses, from what i played.

As Brightbow said, this isn't quite true. Berwick Saga doesn't go into quite as much detail about it as Vestaria does, but there's still named enemies around every corner.

Okay, Serenes is fixed. Turns out the solution was the classic "have you tried restarting your PC?"

Well, even then, you should've seen the two brigand friends in 2-1 that randomly had battle and death quotes even though they were completely generic. Benner is a miniboss in the very first map, which is rather uncommon. Fuva and Zalius, too.

Ahh, this is what you meant. Sorry, I didn't get what you were trying to say.

Well, there's a couple of exceptions later on in the game, I think. There's Trimier, for instance. That woman is a mystery. But well, I did say that Berwick isn't quite as detailed as Vestaria in that aspect. It's sort of the beginnings of what he later developed further in Vestaria.

I mean, I've seen people try to recruit Zalius. Not that he looks any less recruitable then Amundsen.

Chapter 2 main has that horse archer mini boss, the Swordbreaker guy, the bulky guy next to the Swordbreaker guy, Zalius of course, that one asshole Rouge with a Blood Knife, that guy who shows up at turn 18 with Vengeful and of course the boss' buddy. Though I suppose that one happens to be a bounty target.

Yeah, Berwick has no shortage of minibosses. They do tend to have less unique portraits (though some do have them), but they're there.

I'd argue it's precisely because Kaga is retired that he was able to do it. He made Vestaria simply because he could, there was no deadline, no requirements from investors or publishers, etc. Vestaria's only true limits were the fact that it was being made on a barebones version of SRPG Studio.

This is a fair point.

Of course, i don't think Three Houses is the best example here since, assuming you didn't recruit from other houses, those characters will show up as enemies at least once. But that is cheating ngl, they aren't random-ass enemy units that just happened to be named.

I mean, that's true, but when half of them retreat at least once (and let's not even bring up Hubie and the DK), and some of them can randomly be spared if Byleth kills them, the whole thing loses its impact a bit. It's like they only die when the script needs them to (or, well, rather, when the script doesn't need them for anything). If they had been able to make a few unique bosses, they could've used those instead of the same students over and over again.

It plays a fair bit around with the concept too. Like how there are several side objectives revolving around finding people who look like generic enemies. Where you just have to deduce by AI behavior or other factors that they are the people you are looking for.

Or of course there is that one guy who has a unique portrait but otherwise a generic descriptor and stats who is not mentioned as part of any side objective at all. So you are not given any direction in regards of how you should deal with him.
