PS5: 'The Future of Gaming' June 11th event discussion

There was some disappointment to be had at the announcement of E3's cancellation, particularly on this year - the eve of a new console generation. Thankfully, Sony has decided to give their own sort of presentation online at 1PM PST, June 11th. You might be wondering why you've heard of such an event scheduled for last week, and that is because it was postponed a week from its intended air date to "step aside so key voices can be heard during this important and historic time". The presentation will be approximately one hour long and focus on PS5 games, which no doubt means trailers and announcements rather than just specs.

What do you hope to see? And please look away as I make some ill-advised bets

Quote
  • Will the PS5 system have a flat top surface? No.
  • Will the old lady character in Watch_Dogs Legion return in a new trailer? yes
  • Will Parappa the Rapper reveal himself? Yeah! You gotta believe!
  • Who are the first revealed newcomers for Playstation All-Stars 2? Aloy, Crash Bandicoot, and Knack
  • Which new game announcement will really steal the show? Bioshock 4
  • Which already announced game will also steal the show because everybody forgot its announcement? Godfall, maybe?
  • Between the Spider-man sequel and that Avengers live service game, what's more likely to show up? Neither
  • Bluepoint remake of Demon's Souls? No.
  • Bloodborne 2 tease then? No. Did you forget about Elden Ring already? If so, a delightful surprise is coming.
  • What's the price tag? A cool 400.
  • Anything from Capcom? A teaser trailer that is basically the first minute and a half from this but replace the zombie with a raptor and Leon with Regina

They better show us something about Beyond Good & Evil 2, been waiitng for an announcement for years now, and revealing it as a PS5 launch title (and possible timed-exclusive) would be a great idea to get people hyped again. And I mean it, as much hate as timed-exclusives get, if media starts to talk about it, more people will get to know it. Thing is though, that still wouldn't make me think about buying the console. Now if it was a new Rayman game announced, you bet I'll preorder it on the spot!

Spoiler

For anyone who's wondering why do I want BGE2 news, when I actually want a Rayman game, well, it's because Michel Ancel said he will only consider working on a new Rayman game, after they are finished with BGE2... I actually kind of want to play BGE2, don't get me wrong, it's just, I'm not as hyped about it as I am about a possible sequel to my all-time favourite series. You really can't blame me for it...

I'm kinda wondered if the stream is going to be showing what Exclusive games that they are going to be on the PS5 since it's going to be at 8K? And I do want to see what the console looks like since they did showed off the nice DualSense controller earlier.

I updated the OP with links to all the trailers.

That was a heck of a show, worth the wait. Bugsnax is very funny to me because isn't the idea of becoming what you eat a very common nightmare for people? Kena looks like a fun game, and a lot of sequels I wasn't expecting so early. Also I'm sorry but the PS5 looks like a vagina.

I got spoiled on new R&C and Spiderman (AW SHIT INSOMNIAC SON)

Spoiler

So GTAV gets a PS5 port and some exclusive bits I suppose. So then we're going to be watching a bunch of trailers and no more words, eh? We'll see if they avoid putting feet in their mouths. Next is Miles Morales as Spiderman (Nice, I will have to take a look), with a montage of movement and combat, confirmed for this year (So PS5 is coming this year). Next is GT7 which apparently will have a campaign mode they want to sell. It goes into quite a bit but I kind of have the trailer hang on me here so I can't say as much as I'd like. Next is R&C (YAS) where it's revealed we've got dimensional rifts everywhere and I'm wondering how it'll affect gameplay, before they get separated (Oh no, it's happening again) and Clank meets a new character (who might be Lombax? I will not say for sure because these games have kind of said otherwise before). They straight up say the dimensional shifting is going to be instantaneous (PLEASE BE NOT JANK) and in gameplay it'll be in places for you to mess with as well, with it being pre-alpha I wonder how it'll turn out and it won't be before Miles Morales for sure and there's also straight up dodging now. Next game is a trailer alright, focused on a woman from "our world" (I have to suppose) who can run and jump far and summon plants in a game called Project Athia (which'll be an exclusive), we really don't see too much here. Next up we see a robot -inhabited city following a cat around as they all seem to be in a crappy place, just trying to get by. The game's called Stray and it's 2021. SSD's confirmed, Dualsense's default white and black is certainly not my favourite look. Next we have a space game where the heroine is forced to relive her last minutes and she is supposedly being changed by the looping as well and after a montage we get the title Returnal which is for 2021. Next up we get a tiger which reveals itself as a Sackboy, which is revealed to move in three dimensions (IT HAPPENED) and with the trailer we get to see the usual mechanics working with up to 4 players and it finished as Sackboy A Big Adventure (So it's not a game creating title?). Next we see a wehicle combat game where people can fight outside the cars as well. The presenation's so annoying though, so at least I can enjoy killing the lot of them and the game's called Destruction Allstars (HMMM). Next up, Ember Lab's Kena Bridge of Spirits, Where we see a bunch of cute critters and two then we see a girl with a staff that can fire a magic bow and facing some larger being who looks to be corrupting the world and then we see Kena in gameplay with a bunch of puzzle platforming and combat and it looks like there'll be purifying of the forest as a mechanic. Next up is a trailer with a bunch of monsters in high school and one narrating about their issues and we see the seeming perspective character in a band and it's actually about moving beyond High School, it's listed on steam so not exclusive and it's also 2021. Next up is Oddworld (Oh?) with a new Abe's Oddysee game after so many years with him having to help his people again as someone's attacking them. The game's 2.5D and there's a bunch of perspective shifts and apparently he'll be taking too, with it titles Oddworld Soulstorm. After that we see a Tokyo with otherworldly stuff (headless girls included) and all through a guy who can fight the supernatural in first person. There looks to be a bunch of close combat and the title's Ghostwire Tokyo. Next up is a dusty plain with a load of hatted people, from Superbrothers, where we then see the hot apparently enter a space station which flys off and move to another planet- I'm not going to lie Jett The Far Shore lost me, but it's coming this year. Next up is a third person combat title where everyone's gotten at least something that lights up and there's a lot of them just slashing at others (the music did distract me so I'm just lost), but the game's this year and called Godfall. Next up we see some figure over a black hole dive in and enter it dimension and get thrown into another dimension. They run forawrd for a bit before the title Solar Ash shows up and it ends about there. Next is a a trailer with a montage of stuff before a sequence where some guys are looking in a forest and get taken out by who it turns out to be 47 I think, because it's Hitman 3 and it's out early 21. We get gameplay in Dubai which looks neat and it ends soon after. Next we get a weird sequence with the menu before moving to Astro Bot 2 which shows it trying to expand on itself and also it's actually Astro's Playroom. Next we get a game with a guy who seemingly hunts monsters on land and in the sea, which dealing with a bunch of challenges in a chibi enough style. An old guy going about his day is juxtaposed with footage of the monster hunting and we eventually see an army and a dragon as well. It's called Little Devil Inside. NBA2K21 next, so where the microtransations at? Next we look at a living strawberry. Not a typo. Turns out there's a bunch of living fruit that an explorer eats and it's Bugsnax, where you can turn into what you eat (I see) and some of these bugsnax aren't so much bug-like. Turns out you can try to hold a lamp with weiner hands and burn everything down (hopefully, this is the Octodad people after all). Next up is a series of landscapes, then we see a massive bird carrying a dead guy (I bet it could carry multiple), then a massive army of the dammed montage (with an AoT reference for the likely big bad) and it turns out it's Demon's Souls (Wait, Demon Souls sequel ? What?). Next trailer has a casino paradise has a woman looking to get some guy shot on the street and we see him sneak around, teleport up a room and fight a bunch of enemies like it's Dishonoured (it's made by the same devs so yes) and die before looping back where it turns out that's the name of the game, just everyone trying to kill the protagonist as he tries to get all eight of his targets while the woman on the intercom is also gunning for him. That's Deathloop and I hope it turns out good. Next trailer is a dark looking forest setting where someone is telling a story of a girl running into the woods before it turns out an old man breaks in and some monster followed. It cuts to a montage of stuff in the game including a bit with a bunch of bugs flying around a woman and some wolfman near the end. It's RE VIII it turns out, called the Village. I don't know that it should be though.  Next trailer has a guy with a speac suit and an armoury on his back looking at afterimages and a child sitting down. A cat turns out to be a robot and then it reveals that there's a bunch wrong with this picture including a satellite falling down, the girl having hacking powers, them shoehow ending up in space and them ending up on the moon, it's Pragmata for 2022. We then see a bunch of forested islands, over a ruined city where we look at some animals and then it cuts to Aloy riding along and Horizon Zero Dawn 2 and we see a large montage of the mechanical animals, the red infestation and with her exploring more (I wonder how much she'll be able to get to) and we also see a couple of enemies as well for Horizon Forbidden West including a Robo-Elephant. There's a montage of devs hyping the console so that'll matter in the future. Then we get a look at it and I can see why Glennstavos say it looks vaginal, oof. Who designed this? Don't do close-ups guys, come on! Then there's some accessories and that's it.

TL:DR: I have waited so long for a new Ratchet and Clank guys, Abe finally got a sequel, LBP3D is here, Demon Souls got a sequel, I hope some of the new IPs work out, the inbetweens were that weird surreal that's been a staple of playstation advertising for a while now and it didn't wow me.

I'm a little bummed that all games from the devs I looked forward to most seemed kinda underwhelming.

Housemarque's PS5 title, Returnal, looks like they slapped in single player + narrative onto their battle royale game. I was getting my hopes up for another twin-stick shooter.

Ghostwire's art style isn't doing it for me.

Square's next gen game is probably at least a couple of years off.

The Capcom titles were nice tho.

What I liked:

  • Showing off different kings of games with various genres.  Spanning from AAA to indie stuff
  • Outside of those rendering transitions that presentations was straight to the point.
  • Nice to see Ratchet and Clank still being supported after all these years.
  • Good to see "gameplay" even if it's from the pre-alpha footage rather than all cgi footage.

Cons:

  • PS5 base design is more form over function. I know Sony wants to avoid the boxy vcr appearance. But it is the opposite extreme.
  • Not showing the price has me concerned. Probably going to be in the range of 600=800 dollars. Better Sony tells the audience that now than having to risk the backlash closer to launch.

We don't know that this is form over function. Unless you happen to be an engineer with confidential experience with the PS5, how would you have any knowledge on the technical function of the system in regards to how efficient it is, how it cools, etc.?

The PS5's appearance bugs me because the "Digital" version is symmetrical. You can tell the digital is the actual PS5 design they went with, and the disc drive version just looks like it has a cancerous tumor. A lot of us predicted for years that the next playstation might just become a streaming box for games and that game discs were going to disappear. I'm glad that's not the case, though I assume like the PS4, PS5 games discs will continue serving as unlock keys to download games rather than holding any game data. And realistically, they need to keep a disc drive version of the playstation so that retaillers have something on shelves to sell. Can't just ignore the money to be made from the physical market.

I think Sony might try to go for the route of selling the Digital Edition console for the Digital Download only Gamers since there are some Gamers wanted to buy digital downloads and don't have to bother getting physical discs.

I am pretty sure that Sony might have planned on to wait for announcing the price and see what Microsoft putting up the price for selling the Xbox Series X consoles before they announce the price for the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. Because, I think Microsoft is probably going to get screwed by Sony for the reveal of the PS5 system.

From what I saw of the presentation so far (I haven't seen all of it yet), my reaction is... eh. To be honest, I was more excited by the Paper Mario game trailer, and I don't even play Paper Mario. That's not to say the presentation was bad; far from it. It's just that nothing really caught my attention either way.

It was alright I suppose. The new Ratchet and Clank is looking interesting and the game having a different lead developer than the PS4 game is also good news but Ratchet isn't enough to buy me over and most of the other stuff while nice didn't impress me enough.

---

I skipped the XboxOne/PS4 so I might get either the Xbox Series X or the PS5 but it will depend on the price tag. The Xbox currently has my preference if only because they have full backwards compatibility. I've always been somewhat upset with Sony went they got rid of their backwards compatibility with the PS3 and I really appreciate backwards compatibility for every Xbox generation.

I'll have enough time to think it through because I'll wait to see if we get more news about a new Switch (there have been a lot more rumors about a "Pro Switch").

Well, that's the thing with the (hardware) backwards compatibility that the first models of the ps3 had is that everyone says they want it until they had to pay extra for it, kind of how the price point of 599 US dollars was memed. They needed to remove the extra cost for it to become even market viable.

Surely there must've been a way for Sony to have backwards compaibility and not have a PS3 that costs €600 at release?

Even putting the PS3 issue aside Sony hasn't given me much faith with the way they handled backwards compatibility with the PS4. I think Sony's way of doing it even involved a paying streaming service? Which is a big no for me. Not just because of the money but because my country doesn't have great internet to begin with.

The long and short of it is that there is two ways to have (traditional) backwards compatibility: hardware and emulated.

Hardware is putting a physical chip in order to separately run older system games. What Sony did was put a physical PS2 chip in the first models PS3s in order to run backwards compatibility from a hardware standpoint. Since this is a physical component, this costs money to do for each system.

Emulation on the other hand is how pretty much every other console does it including the Xbox. Emulated is the same as you would do on your PC in order to emulate a game.  The reason why Sony couldn't do this is because of the strange architecture and the non-standard processor they used for the PS3 that gave them a lot of problems, nevermind being able to emulate games from the PS2 using a more standard processing architecture. Basically, even if they could design the PS3 to emulate, it would likely take more than a bit of development in order to do it properly.

You could blame Sony for having such a difficult time designing the architecture for the PS3, but what this meant is that a) they eventually removed the physical hardware PS2 chips so hardware backwards compatibility was no longer possible because it was costing money for each first generation PS3 they made, and b) because of the strange design of the PS3, the PS4 would not be able to emulate games from this era without running into the same problem with having to install a PS3 chip, which would increase costs as well and may have perhaps made the PS4 not as popular as it is/was.

The PS5 should have more luck with emulating PS4 games, I'm not sure it will be perfect (as emulation often isn't, it's just more convenient), but there are news articles about how Sony are testing emulation of PS4 games on the PS5 currently and they plan to have the PS5 able to emulate PS4 games.

Makes sense.

I remember the PS3 being really difficult to make games for because the hardware was so different.
