One Piece seems to have heavily inspired Path of radiance

Recommended Posts

So I’ve been reading through one piece again recently and I just finished whisky peaks and uhhh is it just me? Or does anyone else get one piece vibes from PoR’s story? I mean hell Ike and Luffy are extremely similar personality wise. They’re both blunt, headstrong, and fight for the sake of their friends. They’re also hard to anger but when they do get angry it’s usually in defense of a friend or someone close to them. They’re stories also deal in similar themes regarding racism, classism, Freedom, and familial ties that extend beyond blood. The story structure of PoR is also pretty reminiscent of the Alabasta saga in which they need to escort a princess back to her kingdom in order to restore it while having an adventure or two along the way.

Now I’m not one to say oh PoR is garbage because it ripped off one piece because I understand that the two stories are indeed different stories with their own ideas and messages but the similarities are apparent. It honest to god would not surprise me if Ken Yokoyama and Kohei Maeda(the lead scenario writers) are big one piece fans(or in the case of Maeda just a big shounen jump fan in general). I dunno what do you guys think

That's basically every shounen protagonist.

PoR's story was never exactly original. I don't know much of anything about One Piece, but it's entirely possible they feel similar because they're just using common themes and characteristics.

Ehhh I wouldn’t describe Naruto or Ichigo as blunt or carefree like I would Luffy or Goku but I digress.

Well One Piece came about in 1999. Path or Radiance came out in the year of 2005.  PoR  was more inspired by  concepts from Kaga's Berwick saga than One Piece. Such as: a power enemy in black armor with relations to the main character, pair of divine swords, a dark and a light goddess, and apostle that cannot speak to the goddess despite it being her job.  Sure there are some common parallels in the themes. But the stories goes in widely different directions.

I never meant to imply that one ripped off the other just the two have enough similarities between them that I wouldn’t be surprised if the writers took heavy inspiration from one piece when filling in the details of their story from Kaga’s notes. I completely understand that the two stories are wilidly different despite their similarities. I’m not one to compare stories anyway but I just like looking at the similarities.

Also, looking at Kouhei Maeda’s other works(Namely FEs 11, 12, and 13) in the franchise as a scenario writer, it’s very clear to me the man likes shounen jump.

I think that might just be you noticing both stories using some of the same tropes, which makes a lot of sense. That's not a bad thing; tropes are tools; it's how they're used that determines a story.

I think people have been saying, "Ike is a Shonen Protagonist" for at least some time on this forum and, to be honest, it is rather accurate: blunt, socially-awkward, reckless, charismatic, determined to get stronger and reach their personal goal (in Ike's case reaching his father's level as a swordsman), all the things you mentioned, etc.

Probably more Shonen in general rather than One Piece in particular. One notable difference is that no matter how dark it gets One Piece has a very wacky sense of humor while Tellius barely has a sense of humor at all. Ike in particular is probably too stoic and stone face to have been directly inspired by the childish and hyperactive Luffy.
