Eliwood Normal Mode Draft

1. This draft is for 5 players.
2. Eliwood, Marcus, Merlinus, Ninian/Nils, and Athos are free for all to use.
3. Geitz and Wallace are drafted as a pair.
4. Marcus is banned after Chapter 15.
5. The game will be played on Eliwood Normal Mode (skipping Lyn Mode)

Rules:
1. Undrafted units may recruit characters, rescue undrafted units and NPCs, trade, visit Shops and Armories, and dig up items in the desert.
2. Undrafted units may not do anything not listed above, including but not limited to meatshielding, building Supports, opening Doors or Chests, and talking to Fargus in Chapter 16x.
3. All Gaiden Chapters except 22x and 26x are required to be visited. 22x and 26x may be visited at the player's discretion, and don't count towards the total turncount up to 20 turns taken per chapter.
4. Other units may do as they please without penalty.
5. Defend chapters count the last played Player Phase for turns if the timer is waited out.

Penalties:
1. Undrafted units have a 4 turn penalty, per unit per chapter.

Exceptions:
1. Meatshielding is allowed for Chapter 13x.
2. Lyn, Kent, Sain and Wil are free for Chapter 14.
3. Undrafted Thieves may be used to obtain necessary Promotion items.

Ah that's a good point - we can do discord if it works for all of u 🙂  Maybe you can set up a server (I don't really use Discord lol)?

CH11- 5 turns

I made my tactician give supports to Kent, who I suspect is going to see a lot of combat. 

Bartre was useful and visited village. Is 4 turn even possible without Lowen?

CH12- 6 turns?

Forgot to record turns sadly. Marcus rushed first north and then back south while soaking all of the exp. Eliwood gets the energy ring and dragon shield. Bartre was surprisingly decent with ok hit rates. I could have probably improved the turn count but didn't care to. 

CH13- 5 turns

Bartre, the MVP, destroys log with the steel axe in one hit. Luckily logs can't dodge. Bartre also gets to visit the village. Marcus 2 turns the boss and levels up only hp. Happy to see all that exp is going to good use. 

Total 16 (?) turns

E: Gonna take a bit of a break before continuing. I just found a 10 year old FE8 draft I haven't finished :).

Posting this for record.

Finishing this run I realized I definitely could have done better early game if I was more willing to reset. Overall happy with my picks, especially Hector and Pent (Florina should go without saying).

  • Florina is what you'd expect from an early Pegasus knight - great utility and eventually a flying monster. Not too great early on for combat, but she more than makes up for it.
  • Hector was a great boon early game and continued to stay relevant. Combo-ing him with Florina was great since she's the only person who can carry him.
  • Pent is... Pent. What's more to say, this absolute unit comes with great bases and weapon ranks. He was the main staff user.
  • Serra had much less utility than I hoped. I think when I drafted her I imagined being able to do some neat Rescue/Warp chains with her and Pent. Never happened. She ended the game with B Staves and not even close to level 10.
  • Hawkeye helped with some routes, but by the time he showed up Florina was already in action. Honestly forgot I had him a couple of times.
  • Jaffar was what you'd expect from a sword-locked unit with good kill power - great for clearing out hoards, but only if there's no 1-2 range enemies (shame FE7 loves 1-2 range).
  • Nino was actually great for a unit that required 20 turns of optional babying. She really shined in Ch27 where every unit matters and the Final due to her kill power.

I took some notes, but I did this all in two sittings so they're pretty short

Damn, you guys are pretty fast with these.

CH13x- 7 turns

Just tried to give Eliwood as much exp as possible. Pretty hard when he hardly 2 hits anything.

CH14- 5 turns

4 turn was very possible but Eliwood needed to gain speed (to 10) or get a rapier crit.

CH15- 5 turns

4 new units oh boy. Then again I lose Marcus; worst deal in history as Trump would say.

CH16- 10 turns

Pretty hard with all the archers when no one doubles them. Boss kill strategy was risky but worked out first try. Got unlock staff and hero crest  - i forgot you could get a knight crest as well. Well I'm sure my boy Bartre will start pulling his weight at some point.

CH16x- 3 turns

Had to rely on misses to make this work. Didn't get sleep.

CH17- 3 turns

Why would you defend your ship with a hole in it when you can just take theirs? Eliwood is a freaking tank with 12 def and 26 hp. Slow as a tank too with 10 speed at lvl 12. 

CH18- 6 turns

Honestly pretty fun chapter. Rapier crit would have saved turns on the boss. 

CH18x- 6 turns

Hardest chapter thus far. Promoting Kent would have probably saved turns here, but then again the boss is such a pain to kill without crits. 

CH19- 5 turns

Lyn prays to the godness icon and somehow survives against all odds. Got luna for Arthos (or whatever he is called) but no other treasure. 

CH20- 3 turns

Will promotes mid-chapter making him the first promotion. Pretty annoying to plan to finally came up with strategy that didn't rely on crit killing the boss. Got pure water and the horse whip. Barst is so close to lvl 10 and had gained a 1 speed! Up to 4 so he can doube enemies at 0 speed. Thats my boy! Priscilla in lacking in levels as she is only lvl 5...  Even mend staff just gives no exp in this game and she is often busy doing other stuff. Has B-rank in staffs tho. 

I just realized my Kent is pretty RNG fucked. At lvl 18 he has 12 str, 12 speed and 8 def.. Still carrying most maps tho. 

Total up to ch20: 69 turns :p

CH21- 2 turns

Kent rushes to Eubanks and promotes mid-chapter with the help of Ninian. Could have gotten the brave axe if I had two promoted units but sadly Bartre was 6 exp short of lvl 10.  Bartre promotes after the chapter but misses on the brave axe. 

CH22- 3 turns

Luckily I got luna ealier because it's easy to miss here. Heath gets angelic robe to help him catch up.

CH23- 3 turns

Heath shows his worth by carrying Kent to lloyd. Kent gets doubled but only faces 70 hit. Wallace gets lost and is never seen again. 

CH24- 11 turns

I focus on getting exp for Heath. Not much happens. 

CH25- 8 turns

Hardest chapter for a while. Lyn and Heath promote, Heath only at lvl 11... Kent rushes for Jerma with help from Heath. Will solos the archers and snipers up north. After carrying Kent, Heath carries lyn to the hero and goes after the general himself. I would have cleared in 7 turns but Heath misses 80 hit on the last enemy. Didn't feel like resetting after decent lvls. 

CH26- 15 turns

This chapter has an decent concept but the design just sucks. Just grinding exp.

CH26x- (6 turns)

Got my speedwings and exp, and got out. I know I could have spend some time here but why thought. Pricella is promotes after chapter. 

CH27- 7 turns

Heath carries Kent over reinforcement zones. Kent kill everything north. Heath kills the sword-using enemies and visits village for warp! Vaida gets to visit the shops. 6 turn was probably possible but I would have had to plan stuff more carefully and get kind of lucky, I think. 

CH28-  6 turns

Pricella warps Heath to help Eliwood. Kill every enemy but the boss. 

CH29-  11 turns

Holy fuck,  why is this here!? Got all treasure at least. Heath uses the dragon shield. 

CH30- 4 turns

Heath carries Eliwood to the boss and kills her with 8 brave lance hits including 1 crit. 

FINAL- 6 (5+1) turns

All my units except Heath and Kent suck so I give Athos a body ring and luna, and watch him go to town. I make Arthoes die to the dragon to honor the canon. 

Total 149 turns

Rating my units:

Eliwood- Truly a tank: slow as fuck but indestructible. Promoted way too late to be useful late game. Got doubled by most enemies in the final chapter: including the dragon. 

10/10: Only unit who can seize.  Guide this tank to the enemy gate and profit. 

Heath- Obviously saved a lot of turns due to being able to fly. Base stats suck in normal mode, but luckily there are multiple defend maps in which Heath can catch up.  Although I promoted him early, his combat was still very good late game.

9/10: Needed some help to get going but after that truly irreplaceable.

Kent- Carried the combat mid to late game. 1-rounded most enemies with any weapon. 

9/10: The personal mount of Eliwood before Heath. Best combat unit by far. 

Pricella- Good utility but honestly having a warper didn't save too many turns (compared to FE8, for example). Decent combat too after promotion against certain enemies. 

6/10: Eh it's nice to have a medic. Warp saved some turns at least. 

Lyn- Decent combat unit mid game due to being the only one doubling enemies. Fell off late game though: in the final chapter she only tickled enemies with her 12 strength. 

4/10: Killed some tough bosses and enemies. Died more than anyone else probably. I would have rated her even lower if Kent had leveled more speed early.

Bartre-  Saved surprisingly many turns early game. Great availability. Actually doubled some enemies in the mid game. 

??/10: Early game MVP and the brains of the group. Immeasurable value.  

Wil- Not great by any means but not terrible either. Reliable damage and decent utility.

4/10: Similarly to Lyn, saved turns at couple points and offered reliable damage. Will use again.

I made it in 149 turns (171 according to the final screen but minus 19 turns for 26x and 3 turns for the 3 defend maps).

 

Unit Analysis:

Eliwood: Was actually quite useful in the beginning once he was able to double stuff but his mid-game and end-game were pretty poor - his speed was just too low (I guess they made him too balanced) because of his late promo.

Oswin: Because I had so few good early-game units, he was crucial. But when the maps got too big, he really did suffer. In mid- to late-game, he wasn’t able to double a large portion of the enemies and so his combat wasn’t great. I early-promoted him for the move and speed.

Fiora: Not as good as Florina due to availability but still the most useful unit in my team. Once she got going (a few chapters in + with all the useful early-game stat boosters), she was unstoppable. First unit to reach level 20

Raven: Useful, especially once he gets hand axes but his low move holds him back.

Lucius: Surprisingly useful because of his combat and staff utility! But his low defence made it hard to put him in range of multiple enemies. From reading everyone else's commentary, it seems we all overestimated the power of Warp lol (but I think it did end up saving at least 4-5+ turns for me).

Ninian/Nils: Super useful.

Isadora: I felt she was super useful and her combat is quite good thanks to her speed.

Vaida: Better than I expected because of her move but her low aid is a bummer. I don't think she helped save any turns but I could be wrong

 

Generally, most of my units were able to ORKO most of the enemies by mid- to late-game so combat isn’t that important. My early-game was weak though and I think that was what held me back...

Marcus blitzed the left-hand side, Oswin helped with the right-hand side (Merlinus was not deployed so that the enemies attacked Oswin) and got the boss kill, Eliwood took the bottom. Recruited Erk to get Priscilla (I actually had to restart the whole game because I got to Chapter 16 and forgot that I needed Priscilla to recruit Raven and Lucius - two of my draft units lol).

Marcus had to equip Steel Lance to kill the cavaliers at the top and the Silver Lance to kill the boss. Fed Kent all the kills on the right to get him some level-ups for the next chapter. Bought a lot of Door Keys and weapons and managed to save both houses

Used Kent in order to fulfill all the side objectives (chests and recruit Raven + Lucius) in a reasonable timeframe. Also deployed Florina, Lowen, and Sain to ferry Matthew and rescue Lucius and the soldiers. Oswin went to the bottom-left room, while Eliwood and Kent took the rest of the map. Managed to feed two Shamans to Lucius and rescued all three soldiers. Managed to get the Knight Crest, Hero Crest, Silver Sword, and Unlock Staff (the latter was a waste of a Chest Key in hindsight but I forgot that I would not have access to the Member Card)

Just for completeness, Akrasia85 finished in 267 in-game turns (need to minus 3 for the defend maps and an unknown amount for Ch. 26) and Randle finished in 190 turns (need to minus 20 turns for 26x and 3 for the defend maps).

Do you guys want to do another draft? I'm happy with FE6-10.

@KP 2010 I'm not sure but there is at least 13x that you are not counting. I believe Crimsonvolt counted 5 defend chapters, and I copied that. 

Anyway, because I counted 5 defend chapters and you only 3, looks like you won by 2 turns! shit i should have rigged more crits Congratulations ! 

EDIT! Stop the count!  If I am not mistaken, @KP 2010 did not count the penalty he got from chapter 16, which means I won by 2 full turns! And yes, you might find it strange I recounted the votes turns and edited my comment almost a month after the race had finished, but cmon we are talking about the number 1 spot, the gold medal here.
