Total War: Fire Emblem

Recommended Posts

Imagine you are asked to design a Total War game with Fire Emblem lore.

1. What lore would you choose?

2. What factions would you include? What would be their specialities?

3. What features would you have to make it unique, instead of another carbon copy of previous games?

Discuss!

I know of the Total War series and have checked it out before, but I'm not familiar enough with the whole series to really grasp the gameplay and such.

1. The games I feel like would work best with the Total War format are Genealogy, Binding Blade, Sacred Stones, Tellius, Fates, and Three Houses.

2. I'm just going to use one of the games on the list, so I will go with Genealogy Gen 2. Total War games usually have around 12ish Faction leaders right? (I know Total War 2 has a lot more, especially thanks to DLC. I know the Troy game has very few). But the 12 characters I would use would be Seliph (Liberation Faction), Oifaye (Lib), Shannan (Lib), Ares (Lib), Julia (Lib), Altenna (Lib), Leif (Lib), Julius (Empire Faction), Arvis (Empire Faction), Ishtar (Empire), Scipio (Empire), and Arion (Independent). I'll work out the details on what each of them specialize a little later (I'll go do some research)

3. Hard to answer this one, mainly for the reason I talked about in my first statement. I'm sure we could figure out how to put in some sort of Fire Emblem mechanic in there.

Will you support a Day 1 Greil Mercenaries DLC?  🙂

Of course. Even if I don't even use the characters (probably would use Titania, Mist, and Boyd at least once though ngl)

I think a Nobunaga Ambtion-escue Fire Emblem might be a little bit more fitting.

I'd say either Tellius or Fodlan would make the best settings for a Fire Emblem strategy games. Magvel, Ylisse and Fateslandia kinda fall off immediately due to being so bare bones as continents. Archenea and Elibe could work but Tellius and Fodlan seem more based around armies and interplay between states. A Fodlan Total war could even have Rhea act like that annoying pope from Medieval Total War.

But Edelgard will just ignore Rhea!

Question: How about Valentia or Hoshido/Nohr? Haha.

Bit late to the party but I reckon that Fire Emblem: Total War could work in the same way as Total War: Three Kingdoms. I'm not exactly the greatest explainer of things so you'll just have to bear with me.

In TW: TK, there are two different modes: Records; whereby each general is accompanied with a retinue of bodyguards, and Romance; whereby each general is there own individual unit with overpowered stats and skills but can still be killed when overpowered by mass amounts of normal units or better generals. Both of these modes could work in favour of FE: TW due to the fact that each of the games' characters are there own unit on the Battlefield, the exception being Three Houses whereby they can be paired up with a battalion of troops to assist them.

In terms of a Campaign mode, rather than have only only campaign available, there could be the possibility that we can play all the Fire Emblem games' campaigns. This is, in part, due to TW: TK's having only one map but having 4 separate campaigns that can be selected due to them being set at different starting times. A similar system could be put in place for FE: TW but with the addition of each Fire Emblem campaign being set on different campaign maps.

...There is probably a better way to explain it but, for now, I think this will do.

The only downside I see from this venture would be to do with lack of unit variation and diversity. In the Total War games, there is quite a large selection of units that the player can choose to create there armies and to accommodate for certain players strategies. This is, in a way, contradictory of what classes are avaliable to player, due to the promotions system and the specialisations of the player's units in the Fire Emblem games. For it to work, FE: TW would need to flesh out the promotions system and largely increase the number of units available to the player.

I actually can see unit variety working out.

I can imagine Hoshido with lots of archers and a Nohr which is cavalry heavy and wyvern heavy. Tellius factions will have beast units available, ad Three House can up the ante with divine beasts

I'll second this. With loads of scripted events, branching paths, characters moving around, etc. Would be much closer to the fire emblem feel than a TW game.

In fact, I believe Kaga is working on such a game as we speak, related to his Vesteria saga games. Hopefully we will see an english release.

As for total war itself, I see the fates setting as probably the best bet, with its main issue being the distaste people have for it due to how it was presented in the actual 3ds games.

However, you have probably the best instance of visually and musically unique factions, and units that are just different enough. Whereas other games have nations using the same units, or are "the pegasus knight kingdom" or otherwise defined by a single unit.  Looking at mercenary vs samurai, for instance, it's clear that mercenaries get more HP and defence, while samurai are built more around speed. This would translate very easily into giving samurai higher melee attack and movespeed and giving mercenaries better armor and melee defence. Since most of the units in fates are mirrored-yet-different in this way, you could have two factions that may share some similarities, but play quite differently. Plus you could get stuff like faceless, stoneborn, and the history guys would really love 140-man regiments of Butlers.

Unit promotions and having greater variety at the top end worked fine in Shogun 2. You could do something like have Cavaliers be all-around light cavalry, with Paladins as an elite fast cavalry and Great knights as heavy cavalry. 3 different units.

As for everything else, most of what was probably thought impossible has been shown to be doable by the total warhammer with its dragons and fliers and monstrous infantry. Personally I don't dig the hero units but they wouldn't be out of place.

Honestly, from a design standpoint, it would work well, the main issue is probably a lack of interest between the communities. I don't even think you could find people who would make a mod for this. You'd need somebody like the guy who has been working on hyrule total war for the last (12 now?) years.
