Hopes/Predictions for 2022 games?

2021 saw some fascinating games released, but because of *gestures wildly at everything still going on in the world*, a lot of things got pushed back to 2022. That makes for a pretty juicy year for some high stakes bets:

  • Pokemon Legends: Arceus is the buggiest Pokemon game ever released, and yet also the most interesting in decades, with several youtube video essays along the line of "this is what brought me back to Pokemon". The actual quality of the game is contentious, even among critics, but everyone agrees the DLC is ridiculously scummy.
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land lore implies that Kirby or something with the same origin as Kirby is the biggest threat in the universe.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X gets ported to the Switch. Yes, really. AND the next Monolith Soft game gets teased - it doesn't have Xeno in the title.
  • The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Sequel is slated for release in spring of 2023. But everyone agrees that trailer was really good
  • Grezzo's next game is another remake. But hold your groans, because it's either Super Mario RPG, or a Mother game in the style of the Link's Awakening's remaster.
  • Bayonetta's nintendo costumes in the third game include Pyra/Mythra outfits.
  • No 'Switch Pro' released, but we start getting credible rumors of a more powerful Switch in development. I try (and fail) to convince everybody it's the next nintendo platform and I call it the Super Switch because nobody can stop me.
  • The Second Sonic movie has a scene where the Cop Buddy is calling Sonic from an Olive Garden. And there is where we get our Jaleel White cameo.
  • Kratos dies in God of War Ragnarok and I cry like a baby.
  • Sony launches a subscription service to rival Game Pass that includes a tier with classic PS1 and PS2 games boasting full trophy support and peer to peer online multiplayer. The emulation is real bad and the lineup is particularly light on JRPGs, but everybody agrees it's better than the Switch's Expansion Pak through sheer volume of titles.
  • The Dead Space Remake not only releases but the unkillable Necromorph has a much greater role in the story, behaving like Mr. X in Resident Evil 2 Remake across most of the latter half of the game.
  • Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has at least four confirmed kills of classic DC superheroes. None of whom are Batman because he's helping you do it.
  • I was about to bet on no release of FF16 in 2022 until we got an update a few days ago almost confirming just that. So instead my Squeenix prediction is that, months after the release of Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster, they'll tell us "by the way we heard you and we decided people DO want these on consoles. So you may buy them again there"
  • Square Enix releases no new trailers for FF 7 remake part 2, or FF16, but does teasers of remakes for other twenty year old games. Including a remake of Kingdom Hearts.
  • You still cannot walk into a store and buy a brand new PS5 or Xbox Series X off the shelf at any point of 2022.
  • Microsoft announces a new Killer Instinct and I buy an Xbox Series X as a show of thanks. Heck I probably buy one regardless.
  • The Game Awards 2022 ends with Josef Faris presenting Elden Ring as Game of the Year.

Update Jan 26: It has occurred to me that the previous Pokemon game is already the buggiest entry ever released. So I'm very disadvantaged in making a bet on Legends. I'll keep the bet, but this is just an acknowledgement that I now know why it was a bad bet. Furthermore, I added a bonus Square Enix related bet

And just for my own gratification, how did I do with my 2021 predictions?

Spoiler
  • God of War Ragnarok has a cute wolf pup following you around just like Atreus that is eventually revealed to be Fenrir. There are in fact friendly wolves pulling your sleigh, but I did not see them during combat or walking around in that trailer. I did notice Atreus is riding a ghost-looking deer into battle that he presumably summoned. Maybe that's the way we'll get Fenrir? Either way the jury is still out.
  • Fire Emblem Echoes of the Holy War is announced and has ditched 3D models in favor of 2D visuals. Yeah, I should probably get off this hype train. It's very suspect how much of FE4 is in Three Houses, but I guess it wasn't teeing up a remake after all.
  • Let's try this again: Capcom's next fighter is announced. The character models are sprites. Not even a tease. Capcom's fighting game division is a big question mark right now.
  • Nintendo launches a new service centered on retro games that is separate from NSO on April 1st. Oh good god. Listen, before you rake me over the coals for this, the idea of the "Expansion Pak" being separate from the subscription service was the right call. There was no incentive to add more games, let alone more platforms. It had to be its own thing in order to make money. But I NEVER would have signed off on including a twenty five dollar DLC for Animal Crossing, or any individual game. That is 'Xbox Kinect is integral to the Xbox One experience' levels of bad idea.
  • E3, EVO, Gamescom, and Tokyo Game Show are deemed safe enough to reopen as in person events. EVO was cancelled. But the others I think had some in person component. Either way I'm going to count this as wrong because I know how optimistic I was about people getting the damn shot once it was readily available.
  • Grand Theft Auto 6's first trailer takes place in a city not seen in any previous entry. But the game is also revealed to have many cities, one of which is Vice City. Incidentally we did see a new version of Vice City this year, but I should probably stay away from any GTA6 predictions. It's not happening anytime soon.
  • No More Heroes 3, a game about unchecked adoration for super heroes, features the same expanded universe full of cameos of other Suda characters we saw in Travis Strikes Again. Because EUs have pretty much been synonymous with the superhero genre. Right on the money. I guess they could have done more specific parodies of superhero universes, but the Sudaverse is looking bright. Even non Suda games made an appearance like Daemon X Machina and Smash Bros.
  • Halo Infinite overcomes the memes and ends up being the highest rated game of the year, outside of Breath of the Wild 2 if that happens. Halo Infinite did overcome the memes. But I think 2021's highest metacritic rated game is Forza. And maybe some others that ultimately scored higher than Halo.
  • The Uncharted Movie doesn't suck. The Uncharted Movie isn't out. But we did get the first trailer last week and it looks okay? I still think the casting is too young for both characters, especially since the story seems to take more from Uncharted 4 than the original trilogy.
  • Nintendo does SOMETHING to regain some goodwill. Because at the time of writing, they've slipped past EA, Bethesda, and Konami and are fighting Activision for largest blight on the industry. This was the year of the Switch OLED, the trailer-less Chris Pratt Mario, the NSO Expansion Pak, another million joy cons are drifting somewhere in the world, Fire Emblem 1 was returned to the 'Disney vault' alongside several Mario releases, what else did I forget? I only commend them for one thing: letting MercurySteam and Sakamoto make Metroid 5. I was expecting a needless Super Metroid remake out of that partnership, but they skipped ahead three years which is excellent.

And as a special bonus, here's me willing Metroid Dread into existence at around the same time. You're welcome, by the way.

What are your hopes and expectations for 2022? Did any of yours for 2021 come true?

I try not to make predictions, because companies love throwing us curveballs. But I'm happy to share my hopes:

  • Chocobo GP turns out to be as fun as it looks.
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land continues the mold-breaking trend set by Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild.

As for games that haven't even been announced, but I'd love to see:

  • New Super Mario RPG - For the first time since 1996, Square Enix presents us with a Mario RPG that pays homage to the one that started it all while also adding several exciting new twists, like summonable allies, combo specials, and separate parties for Mario and Bowser. That's right, Bowser gets to team up with other bad guys on his own mission to defeat an enemy that threatens their world.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages & Oracle of Seasons Remakes - Remakes in a similar fashion to Link's Awakening.
  • Hyrule Calibur - A Soul Calibur-esque fighting game for the Zelda series developed by Namco.
  • Donkey Kong Country Raremaster Trilogy - A remaster trilogy of the first three Donkey Kong Country games that adds new twists like co-op multiplayer, banana coins, item shops, collectible DK Medals, and new Time Trial Medals across all three games. Featuring HD 3D graphics and a remastered soundtrack by David Wise.
  • Star Fox Adventures Remake - A remake of Star Fox Adventures that brings it closer to what Rare originally intended for Dinosaur Planet, like a fully playable Krystal and a proper battle against General Scales. Maybe even reinstate Drakor as the main villain.
  • Star Fox Origins - A prequel title starring James McCloud, showcasing the foundation of the Star Fox Team.
  • Star Fox Universe - An expansive sequel featuring different characters as the focus of their own storylines, as well as a player-created pilot whose path is yours to choose.
  • F-Zero SX - A brand-new F-Zero installment, featuring for the first time in the series powerup panels to add a strategic twist to the race.
  • EarthBound Future - The long awaited sequel to Mother 3, featuring a story that spans centuries and features multiple possible futures.
  • Final Fantasy Warriors - A Musou title for the Final Fantasy series.
  • Chrono Trigger Remaster - A remastered release of Chrono Trigger with HD, maybe even 3D graphics.
  • Mega Man Legends HD Collection - A remaster compilation of Legends 1 & 2 as well as Misadventures of Tron Bonne.

Hopefully the localization of Vestaria Saga II can be done this year, as is the intention.
Considering they are apparently using the remade version as a base and the remade version is not actually done yet... well, it wouldn't exactly surprise me if that 2022 release window won't work out. But I most certainly hope for the best.

After many, many years, Freedom Planet 2 also finally got a release window. So I hope this will finally be the year.

Console Ports for Grapple Force Rena have also been announced, but no release window yet. Most certainly wouldn't mind seeing them this year.

My biggest hope is of course is that companies will finally face consequences for their abusive working conditions and for turning video games into unregulated casinos. But that's an unlikely scenario indeed.

I am going to go ahead and predict that there will be a new Fire Emblem game. Since the series began, the longest gap between two consecutive games has been a bit over 3 years and 3 months, between Genealogy and Thracia. If we go through this entire year without a new Fire Emblem, then it'll be a new record for longest dry spell in the series history. And yeah, if any time was going to break the record, covid time could easily be it, but I'm going to choose to be optimistic instead over this one. I also think that there will be a short window (less than 6 months) between announcement and release. I think that Nintendo and IS will want to avoid a repeat of how the release date of Three Houses kept being pushed back, so they won't announce it until it's very close to being done.

More speculatively, I'm going to predict that it will be announced in a Nintendo Direct in February, and then released in July. I think it will be a brand new game with a brand new setting, rather than a remake or a direct sequel. I think that it will use a modified version of the engine and mechanics from Three Houses, similar to how Fates shared a lot of DNA from Awakening. However, I do think it will be a less ambitious game than either Fates or Three Houses, and will only feature a single route.

I'm certainly curious to see how Victoria III will end up being. "VICKY 3 CONFIRMED" has been a meme in the PDX fanbase for a loooooong time, so the hype when it was announced earlier this year was real. However, Paradox has had mixed success with their recent publications, so it's not going to be a day 1 purchase for me.

Not gonna make predictions but as for what I'm hoping for.

New FE. Don't care if its a remake or a new FE, just want one. Am thinking it will be a new game, using the Echoes title. I would love to see GotHW or PoR tho I think BB is also a possible one.

A new nintedno warriors game. Would be cool if it was a Three Houses Warriors in the same vain as Age of Calamity, taking place during the War of Heroes however, a nintendo warriors game regardless of the franchise would be cool. A Kid Icarus Warriors would be amazing, tho a bit unlikley.

Xenoblade X ported to Switch, pretty please.

Wind Waker and Twilight Princess also ported to Switch. They are like the last few of Wii U games to not have been ported.

A Mario RPG in the vain of Super Mario RPG.

FF Pixel Remaster on Switch.

Would also love a FF 13 trilogy collection... Feel like I am one of few and it probably would not be on Switch but.. I want it

Otherwise... I really hope PL: Arceus is good (I have it preordered so...), am excited for BotW 2 however not sure if it will be released next year. Recently played through Mario + Rabbids so the sequel has me excited. Also recently finished both Bayo games so Bayo 3 has me massively excited. Am apprehensive about Triangle Strategy after the demo but am still hopeful, the idea of a more choice influenced SRPG is exciting. The new Kirby looks exciting too.

Here are my hopes for 2022, in no particular order:

1. Pokémon Legends Arceus is actually good.

2. Xenoblade X ported to Switch.

3. Grezzo remakes the Zelda Oracle games as a bundle of three games: Ages, Seasons, and the cancelled third game. Since I quite liked Link's Reawakening's art style but I know that not everyone did, I also hope there's an option to use the original 8-bit graphics if the player prefers that.

4. Nintendo announces a new Hyrule Warriors game that is actually a prequel to Breath of the Wild instead of an alternate-timeline game masquerading as a prequel in the marketing.

5. Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection.

6. An FE Genealogy remake, and this time they actually know what kind of remake they want it to be, unlike Shadows of Valentia.

7. A Metroid Prime Trilogy remaster. I recently bought the Metroid Prime Trilogy on my Wii U for $20, and I've been enjoying it a lot. It's very likely that Nintendo will do something Metroid Prime-related before Prime 4 is released, so I hope that they do a proper remaster: update the whole trilogy, and sell the whole trilogy as the whole trilogy. They don't need to do much at all to bring the games up-do-date; just make it HD, use the gyro for the pointer controls, and add some QoL features like an indicator as to whether or not there are still hidden items to collect in an area (like what Metroid Dread has). I just hope they don't do something extremely anti-consumer like a full-price remaster of only the first Metroid Prime game, or a full-price remaster for each game separately.

Hopes:

A Fire Emblem game (ideally a Genealogy remake or a new game...or really anything but a Tellius remake.)

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is really fun and works well. But let's be honest, even if that's the case, Pokemon fans will still be unhappy.

Xenoblade Chronicles X port (if only so I can watch Chuggaaconroy play it)

Forespoken is a really good game

The game Brandon Sanderson is helping with is announced, and we see good gameplay. (I think it's gonna be Soulburner, but we'll see.)

X-COM 3 announcement

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order sequel announcement and release date

More Mass Effect news

Let's get another FEW before another Hyrule Warriors.

I don't think so; I mean, I'm sure you'll find some, but if the game is good and works well, I think most will be happy with that.

I certainly hope so, and I'll definitely be in that category. Maybe I just need to see what a "win" for the Pokemon fandom is like. I feel like I haven't seen one for them in a long time...

My predictions for 2022 might going to have:

  1. An announcement of new Fire Emblem news like new game or remake needs to happen.
  2. More news of Splatoon 3
  3. More news of Final Fantasy XVI and Dragon Quest XII
  4. Maybe have new Nintendo announcements in The Game Awards 2022. (Better not be Nintendo Announcement less like in 2019 and 2022)
  5. More rerelease announcements of NES and SNES games for NES and SNES Nintendo Switch Online (something like The Mysterious Murasame Castle, Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, etc.)
  6. Star Wars Eclipse
  7. An Announcement of TurboGrafx-16 Nintendo Switch Online (since the leaks did mention that there was datamine that was going to be third console app in the Expansion Pack instead of the N64 and Sega Genesis Apps)

  • Crash Bandicoot something. Whether it be Crash 5, CTR Nitro-Fueled 2, Crash Bash remake/remaster or that Wumpa League thing.
  • Spyro the Dragon 4.
  • Fire Emblem something. Jugdral/Elibe/Tellius remakes, something new, Warriors 2, whatever.
  • Breath of the Wild 2 to actually come out.

Here are some predictions regarding the few games/series I care about:

  • Pokemon Legends Arceus sells between 60% and 80% of BDSP's total by the end of 2022. The game has some serious day 1 flaws that later get patched. It receives critical praise for "reinventing the formula", but turns divisive among fans who wonder if it deviates too far.
  • Triangle Strategy is very well received among players and critics alike, and has DLC announced within the year. It turns out to be my most-played game of the year.
  • AI: The Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative sells even worse than its predecessor, and remains super laggy on the Switch. Inexplicably, Uchikoshi gets to make a third game in the series.
  • Following the warm reception of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Capcom announces announces an Ace Attorney Investigation Chronicles duo for Switch, which promises to officially localize the whole series.
  • Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War remake is announced. And within the year, we get an English-language digital-only release of Mystery of the Emblem, time-limited for no apparent reason.
  • Masahiro Sakurai retires to his own private island. Smash players want to hold a tournament there, but the wifi isn't great.
  • Sonic Frontiers is lauded as a more faithful follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild than Breath of the Wild 2 is. Sega still refuses to release the Chao, though.
  • Not Tonight 2 comes to Steam, drawing outsized attention from capital-G Gamers on social media. But not to Switch until 2023, so I keep waiting on it.

Y'know for all the talk about the Fire Emblem series having "almost died" at this or that point, it never has gone away, has it? What I find most interesting about Fire Emblem's future is how another company did the bulk of the leg work for Three Houses. Is that the future of Fire Emblem? Relying on KT in between their Warriors spinoff games? IS has pumped out a Paper Mario and A WarioWare in the years since Three Houses' launch, so it feels like their interests lie elsewhere from strategy games. Even the Advance Wars remasters are being licensed out.

Now THIS is a high stakes bet. I'm worried for both of these games. Imagine finding the ingredients to cook a chili dog. Then calling up Tails' plane for Fast Travel.

And where IS the Chao Garden? I mean if Sega were half as bloodthirsty as other publishers they would have released a Gacha mobile game of that years ago.

Honestly, I'm expecting more of the same of the past couple of years:  A whole lot of nothing.

...

That aside, I would like a new FE game (remake of 4 preferred).  And like so many others, I still await Hollow Knight: Silksong (5 years of wait, as of August 23).

1) NisA's localization process is sped up: i genuinely fear i might be playing Kuro no Kiseki in english when i'll be father

2) a new FE game is announced (hopefully a faithful, HD-2D, avatar-less FE4 remake )

3) a FE 2D fighting game à la Street Fighter or Guilty Gear is announced

4) Triangle Strategy is a success, and Square Enix is tempted to make another one, and also another Bravely game is teased (please, i need Bravely Third, i don't care how poorly it was received in Japan (which still sounds so dumb to me))

5) Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Valkyrie Profile (at least the 1st game), Xenogears and Xenosaga 1, 2 and 3 all get ports/remasters on modern consoles (possibly including Nintendo Switch (and i might as well get rid of my wallet right now))

6) the missing SaGa games and OG, uncensored FFVI are added to the Nintendo E-Shop

I unfortunately don't think we'll see FF Warriors this year because they're already collaborating on FF Origins (blegh!)

Very much hoping Chocobo Racing is as good as it looks, as it was such a huge unexpected burst of nostalgia. I played a lot of the original PS1 game.

Anyway, some of my hopes/predictions:

* We get FEW2 trailer dropped this year, in either Q1 for a Q3 release or Q3 for a Q1 2023 release. While most of it will focus on the 3H lords, the end of the trailer will be an Ike mic-drop moment, leading into the next reveal trailer...

* Fire Emblem Echoes: Radiant Path.

* Suicide Squad reveals Mr. Freeze as its first post-launch character. Assuming the game does dlc characters at all.

* Square reveals Chrono Cross Remaster and FF Tactics Remaster.

* Atlus reveals ports of Persona 3 and 4, Project Re Fantasy, and possibly Persona 6 (though it will take a couple years as Atlus games tend to).

* Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

Sales predictions:

* DW9 Empires flops as hard as it deserves to. Honestly, this seems inevitable as it is sandwiched between one of the most packed February release cycles of all time. It's Horizon and Elden Ring's month and everyone else is just living in it.

* Monark unfortunately also suffers for that release window. Saints Row might too, but I'm not confident in any prediction.

* Square's month of madness results in incredible in modest success for Triangle Strategy. Chocobo Racing will be Square's biggest release of the month. FF Origins will sell reasonably, but disappoint by lofty franchise standards. Babylon's Fall gets buried under the weight of the other titles, perhaps intentionally so as Square seems to have little confidence in it.

* Touken Ranbu Musou is a reasonable success at somewhere around 1 million units, held up almost entirely by Japan.

* Gotham Knights initially disappoints but gets some long term positive word of mouth sales. Either way, it will be massively overshadowed by Suicide Squad, which will be the most successful looter shooter since Destiny 2.

For that Chrono Cross Remaster rumor to be true.

A Chrono Cross remaster? I'd prefer a Trigger remaster first, myself. But it'd be great if Toriyama could be brought on for the character designs to give the game more consistency with its predecessor. And maybe trim a lot of the chaff characters in favor of giving the worthwhile party members more development (seriously, why do characters like Funguy and Turnip even exist? Turnip's especially bad as you can't get him until the very last dungeon and he's a strictly worse Glenn that doesn't get Einlanzer or a dual tech with Serge). And maybe handle the game's hackneyed subplots about environmentalism and racism better (especially in regards to those damn, dirty dwarves). Really, Cross needs a remake or reimagining more than a simple remaster. Which would be ironic yet fitting, as Cross itself was a heavy reimagining of Radical Dreamers for the SFDD (which is even alluded to at one point late in the game).

Oh, that Stranger of Paradise garbage? For a second, I thought you were referring to a remaster of Final Fantasy Origins, as in the PS1 compilation of FFI and FFII, but I doubt Square would go for that since they already have the Pixel Remaster collection (as much of a massive disappointment as that was). Way to go, Square. Could have had an awesome Warriors game, but why strive for greatness when you can settle for "We're here to kill Chaos"?

So, here's a wild hope. This year is the year of the SRPG, much like last year was the year of the JRPG. We've got Triangle Strategy, Midnight Suns, and Digimon Survive coming. FF Tactics was leaked, and FE is looking pretty likely.

Wouldn't it be wild if Sega also brought back Shining Force through a remaster to go along with its mobile game? Langrisser did the same thing.
