The whole point of the game is having to make these choices. A golden route where you get everyone invalidates those choices. It's not about whether they can write it well, it's about not wanting them to cheapen the experience of EVERY OTHER ROUTE.

Then simply don't make it cannon. Make it the Gold ending that some want an option for. I don't think having a route where you manage to get all the characters would be a bad option for those that want it, and if you have to play all the routes to make sense of the story then, having one that sort of merges them wouldn't be a bad thing. It's done in various visual novels that have a ton of routes, and having a final ending doesn't invalidate the others nor does it tend to cheapen it, at least from my experince playing them.

How would having a route where you can get all the characters really cheapen the other routes exactly?

Why are people saying that your choices matter in 3H when every single route ends with the "and they all lived happily ever after" epilogue?

I think it's the same thing that happened with Mass Effect. Honestly, outside of the house that wins and who ends up with whom and so forth, you're not really making that many choices, you're basically being the tactician.

  2. I'm on the opposite end of things here I think, I like the Avatar Ideas as to me it makes it easier to get invested in the story for some players. I'm fine with the idea of the character being Alm or Marth or who ever as the main character, but at least give me the option to interact with them in a way that's interesting and not like "Cool if I move this character here I get a rank with them." and then that's it. I actually liked the three routes options, but I do perfer the idea of a cannon ending happening in some way.

New FE, maybe suprise us with a character that comes from a different country entirely and gets embroiled with the confict. Maybe bring back the Laguz or something like them, Panne was an interesting character but I would like to know more about races like that.

  3. Agreed with Eryon, at the momenent El has a compelling reason to do what she's doing and yet we know that there's still sense of reason to her actions. Making her just the big bad will make her into a character that has to be unrepentent.

The issue with making a villian that's not some big evil being is that you have to consider how sympathetic you need to make them. Too little and you have to wonder why not make them full on evil and one dimensional, which isn't bad in my opinion, we need more of those in games honestly. Too much and players will be left wondering why they weren't on the good guy side. El would fall way to much in the latter catagory, more so than she does now. By having her where she is, it let's you sympathize with her and yet still want to beat the baddies.

Interesting take. However, allow me to expound an alternative interpretation.

Firstly, I believe Thales fully expected to find either the Sword of the Creator or the Crest Stone of Sothis in the Holy Mausoleum. He's utterly unsurprised when the Flame Emperor reports what was there. I definitely agree that they were trying to get a weapon for Edelgard, but I think they wanted her to wield the Sword of the Creator, given they implanted the Crest of Flames in her. Aymr just feels like a backup plan.

I also don't think Jeralt's death was planned. Kronya just stabs him on a whim because he's a "beast" who stopped one of her plans. Thales outright tells her that he only saved her so she could fulfill a purpose, which I took to mean that he would have left her to die in Jeralt's place if he hadn't needed her to fuel the Forbidden Spell of Zahras - thus, Jeralt's death wasn't an integral part of the plan. I personally believe that everything the Slitherers did after Byleth got the Sword of the Creator was aimed at killing Byleth. I mean, they hate Sothis, so once Thales figured out that Byleth had Sothis's Crest Stone, I imagine Byleth would've been a "kill at any cost" target for them.

All in all, I don't think that the Slitherers were trying to alienate El and Byleth; it seems more like an unintended consequence of their increasingly desperate attempts to kill Byleth.

I have to wonder though, even if they killed him would that have fixed the issue? The Crest would be a pain to remove, and if they killed him they may have destroyed the crest in the process. Not sure on Jeralt's death. Why would they let him live if he's the thing that is the most connected person to Byleth? Wouldn't you want that person out of the way to make Byleth act more rashly and make it easier for Edelgard to kill him, or vice versa. Even if they hate Sothis, they want that sword, and if you could corupt Sothis, why wouldn't you try for that and use the powers to benifit your plans?

  5. I'm seeing a lot of nos, but I'm going to go on the Yes path here.

It's not as hard as people are making it out to be to create an ending that could be seen as a "Good" or "Cannon" ending. It doesn't have to be happy all around either. I've been thinking about how to do that for a while and in creating a fifth (I consider the branching option of the Church to be ther fourth option) ending that can tie up things and leave people satisfied. And honestly I don't think you would have to do too much to get that.

I'm going to use Blue Lions for this example, since it's the route that I'm the most aquainted with.

Firstly during the Pre Time skip, what could be done is (given you can talk to and get points with and return lost items to characters) is bring up say Claud, Edelguard and Hubert by talking and getting the right answers. I don't know if you can give them gifts, can't remember at the moment, but I know that in answering right their trust in you goes up. You gain their trust. Second is post time skip, You'd have to wait till the battle of the Egale and the Lion, and talk to them. I don't think you could recruite the Lords then and there, but you can get their bodyguards.

Here you could have Dimitri and Blyth talk to Claude, or if you're doing Golden Deer, have it be Claude and Blyth talk to Dimitri, then you have the three of you talk to Edalguard. You can't get the lords then, you'd have to wait till later chapters, but you use that to gain their trust.

Also the main villains would then be Those who Slither and you'd get more lore out of it.

I would also say in regard to the issue of the multiple units, I don't have an issue with having a whole bunch of them. However if that's really an issue for players, then units that you didn't recurit previously could be used as Allies in the other rounds and you just have to keep them alive.

As for how you end it in regard to the three lords? Have the church reformed, Rhea giving her post to Blyth, and the trio, rather then rule as different kingdoms, have them act as a council where Blyth acts as the final vote. You don't need to have them romance one another unless you want to, and you can set it up where each works with the others. Edel can get her church reform, Claude can get what he wants, and Dimitri's madness goes away for the most part.

I would think you would only need to add maybe a few chapters after Chapter 22 or something.

I like the idea of having an option where you can find a peaceful solution and at the very least clean up the cliff hangers and other aspects. Hell, one part could be where Edel and Dimitri have to confront Lady Pratricia about her connections to TWSITD.

When you think about it, if Edelgard has Byleth with her, he would really pose a threat given how Byleth can use the Sword of the Creator, which would allow him to be a one man army. If we consider when Byleth doesn't side with Edelgard, Edelgard suffers a lot, becoming more and more reliant on the slithers to fight the war, making it far more easier for the slithers to have control over her, and much easier to eliminate once she is no longer useful.

And despite Awakening's cheerful tone most of the time, the fact that we have a world that actually loses and Grima turned it into an apocalyptic world really is pretty insanely dark.

And that's part of the whole thing with this story, and probably one of the factors that Jerlt helped create with his role as a leader to him. Blyth grew because of the love that his father gave him, he wasn't someone that could be easily manipulated because of the foundation that was laid with his father. Not only is he a threat because of Sothis powers, unlike the other three lords he doesn't have issues that would cause him to fall prey to their whims. He has his father, and then he has the students that he teaches. Even during the attack before with the theives, they were already planning something when Blyth and Jerlt walked in. I get the strong impression that they probably were looking for him long before Edelgard was chosen to act as puppet ruler, and then he landed in their laps so to speak.

Also given that they went after Dimitri, and cause issues in the Allience, it's clear that they're not just thinking of one goal in mind when they want the war. I have to wonder if part of their hopes is turning Blyth dark to lead them as a reborn form of Nemisis with Sothis's powers.

And even in Fates, with all the issues, that's some pretty heavy story telling in regards to being taken away from your family, then foreced to fight the people that raised you or the people that you're supposed to be blood related to. Then there's Eilwoods story and Roy's. As you said Awaking has this dark undercurrent to it of, if you don't get this right everything goes to hell and there's nothing you can do to stop it. FE Games are all dark in their own way.

  7. Interesting theory, I'd like to add more to it. I've assumed from the start that the only reason they're using Edelgard is because they didn't have Blyth, or know of his/her existence. Honestly, it seems that they're interested in more than simply blocking Edelgard from talking to the Professor, I think they want him/her to eventually replace Edelgard and use him/her for whatever reason they have. They're trying to pit the two against one another so that Blyth has reason to kill her and probably eventually become a dark version of Sothis.

In regard to getting a good ending. You don't make them all lords. Or rather once they join your team, two of them lose that position for another unique one that's lesser than lord but high enough that it could be seen as something special. It's not undoable, and I would say you would have to have it more towards the end of the game rather than at the start. You have to get the other two after the time jump. That's at least how I see it.

I don't know...FE9/10 was pretty dark too. Genocide and the whole world is at war. Yeah, Jungrel has a lot of dark aspects to it, but so do the other titles. I mean Sacred Stones fore example, even when you win, the empire of Gradeo gets wrecked by a natural destructive force. So there is that.

  8. Can you be treated like a thief when you had created those mechanics? I mean, it's more about trademarks than stealing...

Well that depends on the issue of who created what, and how many people were involved when the mechanics were altered and fixed. Game programing, when it comes to certain design elements can be seen as a group effort over an indiviuals. Someone can come up with how a character jumps, but another might alter that so that the jump works better, or the math equasion for the points gathered, or what's expected of having a character move across a chess board. In honesty, most strategy games can date their mechanics back to Risk and Chess, so I guess they're all stealing from those two now.

If it is trademarked as IS's intellecual design, then yeah I think it counts towards the idea of stealing as the company owns the rights to the set up. You can make a home brew D&D game but you better not sell or market that item becuase Wizards of the Coast own the mechanics of the game and how it works.

Well, Inafune didn't create Mega Man; he didn't have any real involvement with the franchise until X1. And I'm of the personal opinion that Capcom has more than enough grounds for a lawsuit.

Second point: considering his quote about "no player avatars", once can start to imagine... .

Yeah that's part of the hard thing to figure out. He's playing on the cusp of close to lawsuit territory as he's not directly useing the actual set up for megaman, nor the direct mechanics, but it's damn close.

See to me the first few FE games always felt more like a VNSG rather then a straight on RPSG because most of the time you wern't playing as marth, you were watching his story rather then, you know, being involved in most of the choices in the same way you chose for a RPG.

I don't know much about the Capcom/Inafune drama, but let's make another example: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Let's put aside that Konami is crap now: the game is pretty much Castlevania in the style of SoTN, a game made by the same dude who is making Bloodstained.

    Would you call it theft?

^^^ Yeah, this is what I mean ^^^

You mean Igarashi? Again that depends on how much his work is using the mechanics from Castle and how much is new. I mean there are always going to be some aspects of gameplay that are the same across the board when developing a game, but other aspects are specific to a series and could get called into question if the game is playing too similar to another game. It could be seen as such if BSRoTN is too close to Castle and thus Konomi may get ticked and go after him.

We know too little about the game overall, and it has its structural differences (the game is using rogue-like procedural generation); though not-Shanoa is not-Shanoa, that's about it. The story also has a theme of alchemy, and doesn't really use Dracula.

Mighty No 9 is structured like -along with having a setting and characters- a Megaman game. A virus released by a mad scientist has caused robots to run amuck, and it's up to one of them made to look like a young boy to fight them and absorb their powers over 8 main stages. That's Mighty No. 9 and Megaman Classic.

What it comes down to is that Bloodstained is a spiritual successor, while Mighty No 9 is much more blatant at its copying. It's the first (and really only) major criticism I have of the country.

Yeah Mighty No.9 has a lot of similarties to Mega, we have to see how it plays out and if Capcom will get annoyed or not.

  9. I think they did this on purpose so players do have to think about their units and figure out the best supports rather then running around willy nihilly and just basing it on who's hair color will look better on what kid. Sadly that's how one of my friends played the game of Awakening.

  10. Being an ass can still be a detriment to the character. Severa is a tsundare character and her supports always get on my nerves because we never see her show any other side. Too much of being an ass will make players see the person as unlikeable.

As for the avatar. I think giving the character a personality, and more towards the idea of letting them be their own character rather then just an avatar would help players a lot more then a blank slate. One thing to do would be to have the player have the option to name the character and maybe traits as well as maybe positive/negative/neutral responses based on how the player is playing the game. Like for example if the Avatar is with a character and they constantly do the fighting or use the other character as a meat shield then the other character will have a negative response to them, but if they do well, share the fighting with the other character then a more positive/neutral response will occur.

  11. In regard to Valm having worship of both Naga and Mila, it could be that, like most religions, worship spread as commerce and trade were done. Given that Validar and Aversa mention that Gangrel was told of Valm's invasion, it could be that both Ylisse and Plegia have trade ties or did at one point, to Valm. Missionaries from the Church of Naga could have gone over and spread the word around creating the worship of both Mila and Naga to happen. Word of Naga could have happened prior to that as well. I'm guessing given that the Nada Kayu (or however you spell that character's name) from Magval's history could have been a relation to Marth (the whole fang being possible the falchion) it could have lead to some nod to Naga being a minor god there as well.

The Demon King (Fomortiis) could easily be just a demon brought about after the Tellius stories via magic mixed with dragon and other creatures given birth and that thing spawned other things. Grima's design reminded me a lot of Fomortiis as a whole, except in Dragon Form. I'm assuming whatever host it takes, it will take on some of the creature's form so in the case of Grima, who probably was a dragon, it made itself look like that. Anyway off topic, as for the Valentia Gods, I'm wondering if Duma's (Doma) appearance comes from the fact that he's been corrupted? I think back to Shino religion and how in some cases when a spirit gets corrupted it mutates to look horrible. So maybe that's the case here and we only see the corrupted version of him and not the true appearance?

  12. (For whatever reason the quote system is not working for me here so forgive me for doing responses this way.)

@Hardin: I'm glad to hear that Narihiro and Tsujiyoko are both interviewed, at least we get to hear some information there. Wasn't it that Kaga usually gave all the info and they didn't get a lot of say about what happened in regards to things in the story? It's been a long time since I read about early fire emblem development interviews.

@ Freyjador: Gotta agree with you on your comment. Yes having Kaga have some info might have been interesting, but since he's had no connection to the FE series since his departure, I'm not sure he could give anymore insight into what was said other then what he's said before in other interviews. Also at the time with the whole disk system with the PS1 it was a case of issues between Sony and Nintendo, I kind of have to wonder if there was more with kaga leaving regarding connections to Sony and the situation there then what we as consumers know. Given that the whole backwash with Sony came from them getting into a fight with Nintendo over the disk system in the first place. But now I'm getting off topic.

@CrimeanRoyalKnight: Well that depends on two factors. Are the assets in question owned by Nintendo and IS specificially? If so then yes, how dare he take something that is copyrighted and owned by a company and use it to make other games. It's one thing if he's building from scratch it's something totally different if he took material that, by law, would be owned by the company he sold the rights to.

And why is there no proper credits for TRS in the first place? It depends on the people involved in the situation. There are some members of Capcom that left with Inafune but they left for their own reasons and have a beef with the company for some reasons. As the guys from Ubisoft that left stated, they each left for their own reasons and not because their buddy was having issues. Working in the industry is not easy, so you don't want to burn a lot of bridges when you leave, that's dumb. But Kaga wasn't the only one that made the game. Sure he helped design it, but there were two others that helped it along.

The issue becomes who's the one that's holding the grudge? We know that Square for a while had issues with Nintendo and has since worked it out and now works with them to create FF games. Could it be from his side and not Nintendos? Maybe still issues with IS in particular? Unless both sides are willing to come out and talk about it, or we get court documents that go into the details of the suit, which I don't think will happen, it's going to be a while before things simmer down.

This has happened before with other games. There are only some creators that you can most assuredly say have to be mentioned about in a book because they played a part all the way to the programing of the game. Others you can get away with if it was more a group effort. Final Fantasy has that same issue that FE does due to the fact that the creators were more in a group then a single person. Megaman on the other hand had Inafune doing not only art but also helping with level and I think some programing. Would it have been nice, sure. But the question remains on, who's not extending the hand. I mean they could have said, "We tried to get in contact with Kaga but he refused to do an interview for the book." and that would come off as rude.

I think about what happens with the Watchmen, DC and Alan Moore. He wants no connection to the movies or other things to do with the Watchmen, so they really don't talk to him about it.

I don't think anyone's holding a grudge on him, I think it's more an Alan Moore/DC situation. Both sides might be bitter about things, but in their old age they give up caring in some ways.

  13. Just a Quick question in regard to original content as far as story development goes for this contest.

    1. What would be seen as "recognizable Fire Emblem" type material? Are we talking as simple as the triangle weapons, the locations, or does there have to be a direct tie into the past? I.e. Characters from the series must have direct ties to the story?

    2. Will the story be checked over for grammar and editing, in regard to how perfect it's written given the short amount of time for writing?

    3. You said there can't be more then one submission per person, so no second story then could be submitted after the first one is put up?

Just want to make sure I have all the rules in regard to the set up.

    Thanks!

  14. So I was perusing through Anime Insider way back in the day and I happen upon this ad with this blue haired girl with a rapier, her brother with a spear and this awesome looking red head with a sword, and I wanted to know more about it. Sadly I couldn't get the game because, at the time, it was sold out of the local game stop. So I chalked it up to trying to find out more about the series, and then I got to see Marth and Roy in action in Melee and I wanted to actually play the series where they came from.

So basically I just point to Joshua whenever anyone asks what got me into Fire emblem.

  15. In regard to the issue of the number of games not being listed in the book itself, this isn't really that unusual with anniversey editions of series focusing on the newest released games. Dragon Age did something very similar where they only have brief bites about everything before Inquisition and then most of the book is on Inquisition. As for the issue of Kaga not being included in this, there's probably several reasons for this, including the fact that he and IS's group aren't really talking as far as I've read (Much like Ubisoft and the former head of Assassin's Creed series), and he may not have wanted to do an interview for the series at all. There are creators that are very much like that after they leave a company.

What I would want to know is why the other three developers that worked with Kaga don't get any mention at all, if ever. We never hear their side of the story and it would be nice to hear what they have to say as well about the creation of the games.

As for the book, it's nice to have the behind the scenes stuff, but what I would really like is more an in game sort of book that actually fleshes out the worlds and discusses the gods and creatures there.

Over all it looks pretty. Will it comes State side, we shall have to wait and see.

  16. I think the social links idea would work, but the character needs to be defined rather then just a blank slate. Each of the persona protags tend to have their own personalities and specific ways of looking at things. I'm a bit worried about the whole "Let's do the bioware tree" option thing. One of the major problems people have with that is that you tend to have three choices, and of those you have the paragon (good), the neutral, and the renegade (evil) option. Then there's the whole thing that, based on this, you earn your companions love, which can be problematic because some of the time certain characters won't work with you if another character is in the party. And if you don't earn enough affection with the character they leave. So you have to always monitor where the love level is with your character.

I would think something more like the persona route could work? Maybe scenes happen if you do various tasks. As for the Avatar's customization, I would think that clothing, looks, some aspect of their personality, could work for this, rather than them being too customizable. Even with Bioware and other games that let you go hog wild with designs, you still have aspects that are preprogramed into the character.

  17. Confessions:

-I tend to like to grind a lot in casual mode to bring all my characters up.

-I think Casual mode is okay, I usually play it when I want to see the story.

-I haven't yet finished Shadow dragon as I keep having to restart because I keep losing units and I refuse to lose any unit unless it's Death by Plot.
-I haven't finished RD because of same thing above.

-I'm not big on roms so I haven't played any of the games outside of the ones released here in the states.

-I've been a fan of the series since first seeing Sacred Stones in Anime Insider as an ad and found Joshua very cool looking and seeing Erika got me excited to play.

-I don't own sacred stones due to a friend refusing to sell it to me along with their Rekka. (apparently I wasn't offering high enough for them.)

-I'm not a huge fan of Michah and Sothe as an item.

    Head cannon:

-All continents are on the same world the difference is the time period.

-The Dragon Gate actually acts as a portal between times not worlds.

-AU's exist in their own plane and are on top of the time frame that actually happens and are running parallel to one another.

-Ike returned to Tellius later in life after traveling and realizing that what he wanted was at home.

-Soren eventually learned of his family and blood line.

-Palles is directly related to Marth and Chrom's family line.

-Mark is an ancestor to Kris, who is a ancestor to Corrin and Robin.

-Priam is related to Ike, but it's not as direct as most would think.

-Robin's mom is from Magval and she's a decedent of Erika and Ephraim.

-FeRobin marrying Chrom means that Kris and Marth's families are now connected.

-Robin has connections via family tree to a number of past branded and dragons meaning that their blood is more susceptible for Grima's use.

-I have way to many head cannons for my pairings.

  18. The thing about the Shepard insert is that no matter what your choices you always wind up in the same situation throughout the game. Sure you can get more allies, but it's not a perfect situation either because some situations are not of your choice, or they only give you A or B, there is no C option that you would normally do.

I think the Avatars do work it's just a question of how to define them more in a way that people can enjoy. I think making them co protagonist works far better then having them be the main lord in this case because of what goes on in the story. Having a character rise in the ranks, or be someone's childhood friend works better because it makes you an outsider looking in and allows the other characters to explain things that are going on better then if you're the main insider and should know all the info that you're getting.

For the next protagonist, I would think a female, maybe someone like Mary Queen of Scots. Have her be in a situation where she has to rival someone in her family and is dealing with the fact that others are trying to put her on a throne that she may not be ready for. Your character could be there to help her or harm her actions based on if you are for Mary herself or if you're for her rival Elizabeth. I would say the person is good, decent, but still has issues as she tries to figure out what to do.

As for the Avatar, I would say that the person you play could come from a lower house who was friends with Smallfolks and Nobles. This person knows about the different aspects of the world but is still learning to handle court as well as the political aspects. Their family has had ties to both sisters via their father or Mother and they have loyalty to both technically as they grew up with both sisters. You have to base your choices of support based on what you learn as you navigate between the two royal houses and decide which would benefit the people more.

  19. I could see a war of the roses type story going on. It would be kind of interesting if they decided to do it as a generational thing eventually ending up like the History plays of the Henry's and Richards. You could easily have it where you play a Palles like person who is an orphan that is believed to be the heir to the throne, and the opposing side has the "Real" child there. Endings could end up where you rule alone, or together, or something else based on the actions in game.

Or how about a Mary vs Elizabeth sort of story where the two sisters are trying to take control of one place while there's a war being waged around them with a third or fourth party. In this case you move up the ranks to help either side.

I'd like to go back to Elibe or magval actually for a story, or Jungral since that one is supposed to take place in the same world as Archania. Or maybe where Say'ri came from and have a more pre meji era sort of game. Something after Awakening or between Awakening could be nice as well to clear up things.

If you really want to play as a conquer maybe have the story of Chrom's father and show that story and how it got to be the way it did and why he seemed like such a war monger.

  20. My top five as of right now:m

Fe!Robin x Chrom, just for the sheer fact that it's one of the few times Chrom comes off as his age rather then trying to be older then a older teenager. On top of that the supports in Summer Scrambler and their interactions in the main story come off as sweet and honest, and I like the fact that he wants to stay friends even if she rejects him.

Virion x Tharja, not sure what drew me to this pairing but I like the fact that he actually can get under her darker aspect and it's one of the few supports where Tharja's legit worried about someone other then Robin.

Gaius x Lissa, the fact that he's willing to teach her all these things and that they become friends and she doesn't care about who he was. Not to mention the S support is really sweet, that she pretty much tells him she loves him in a way that just feels very natural for the two of them and they seem to have fun being around one another makes this one of my favorite pairings.

Donnel x Sully, He treats her like a hero, never once wanting to challenge her but to swap stories and she's interested in learning about his life and it seems like the type of life she would prefer over the whole courtly thing.

Cynthia x Inigo, I think the fact that she cheers him on rather then cuts him down about his flirting and later seems to be willing to listen to his complaints and still view him with a happy sort of optimism is sweet to me. Also, given that I see them as both in their younger teens their actions following the S support seems about right. also I figure out of all the girl's she'd probably be the one totally supporting him being a dancer and helping him find ways to stand out with all her heroic aspects (Like a huge explosion on stage or something like that).
