  1. So as most of you know, the final two DLC packs in Fire Emblem Fates were never officially localized and released outside of Japan by Nintendo Treehouse or otherwise. And while I've personally seen a fair amount of demand from fans for an unofficial patch that allows them to play said DLC packs in English, said patches have never been completed to my knowledge, though there have been a few previous attempts.

    The last person I'm aware attempted to create one goes by the name of Silent Hell, and you can find the post about it here. It actually got fairly far for this sort of project – he managed to accomplish just about everything on the actual hacking side of things, and most of the preliminary translation was already provided to him through this Tumblr blog, used with permission. The problem he ran into was on the editing side of things, which is where I first came in to help. We struggled to make all the conversations sound natural and like a professional localization, and despite our best efforts some of it still came off sounding a bit stilted. In the end Silent Hell had to abandon the project due to other commitments, but he allowed me to pick up on where he left off if I wished.

    As for why I wasn't able to act on that until now, a few reasons. First, I had personal commitments of my own. Second, I was pretty much by myself after Silent Hell left, and while I don't lack confidence in my own editing skills, I do have to admit that the sheer amount of conversations that still had to be given that job – as well as previous ones that I felt could use some extra polishing – was daunting to me. I did try to seek out help from places I frequent more beforehand – such as GameFAQs, Reddit and GBAtemp – but not many people were willing to make that commitment. And that's how I was led here. Not just because this place is composed of the largest Fire Emblem fanbase on the Internet, but also in light of the Thracia patch that was recently released; while unrelated to Fates specifically, it does manage to demonstrate your support for even more niche fan projects.

    So what would I need to complete this patch? Well, some willing writers and editors, for sure. I don't need the most talented or dedicated bunch, though I do want the dialogue to sound at least genuine. Anyone willing to help out test this project on a modded 3DS would also be welcome. I can do that part myself, of course. But with the many different save files and parent-child combinations I'd need to jump between especially on the Hoshidan festival side it would take a lot longer than it needs. Anyway, just wanted to put this out there in case anybody was still interested. If you aren't, that's fine, but I'm definitely willing to finish this if the demand and support is there.

  2. All the voices fit their characters perfectly IMO. There are a few lines I feel could've used a second take, but the English VO in this game still gets a thumbs-up from me.

    Xander/Marx reacts exactly how a person in his position and of his character should. If you think the writers were "smoking something" when writing that scene you probably haven't read his supports to understand his character.

  3. People talk about licensing issues for particular voice actors, but if it were only a few couldn't nintendo have re-dubbed (in Japanese) those few characters? It wouldn't be exactly the same but at least the whole ship wouldn't get sunk by some anal licensing studios.

    But then what's the point? People are upset because they want to play with the original voices.

  4. You're assuming that there's an "extra mile" to be had in this case. At this point I highly doubt that NoA "didn't try hard enough" and that NoE supposedly cares more. Seems more like the agencies representing VALSHE and Renkah simply don't want their work outside of Japan.

    But here's the thing. Nintendo of America has never included dual audio in games they've localized. It's always been 8-4 or NoE.

  5. Me too. It is likely that Europe will suffer the same fate (pun not intended) and I am not at all looking forward to it.

    It could be that solely the Special Edition which has a lack of dual audio due to the fact it has all three games on one card and not enough space to include a Japanese option. I sincerely hope this is the case.

    NoE did go the extra mile to add dual audio to their version of Rhythm Heaven Fever and fix the glitches involving it in Fire Emblem: Awakening though.

    So it's possible.

  6. Radiant Dawn comes to mind. That game got slaughtered in the localisation and I'm pretty sure there wasn't anywhere near as much backlash.

    NOA probably won't come right out and say it, possibly because of an NDA, but it's very likely that it was a licensing agreement that prevented dual audio. Hitori Omou was Renka's debut single, so her agency would've been very interested in licensing it and then there's VALSHE and her agencies. Still, even without that, Japan takes VA work much more seriously than the West does, to the point where some contracts forbid the use of their work outside of Japan at all.

    Funny you mention Radiant Dawn. .It also had no dual audio.

    What else was "slaughtered" in the localization? News to me.

    This is just a guess but maybe it's because many more people were looking forward to the game (with there being new fans and all). And the fact that the game isn't cheap (and most are probably buying the three paths to enjoy the whole story) might had fueled their outcry.

    I think it's more that the Internet is much more developed nowadays, to the point that even the tiniest minority can make their voice heard, as well as the fact that people were following the Japanese version of this game much more closely.

  7. It's too bad that Nintendo suddenly changed from dual audio to no dual audio. If awakening did not have dual audio, salt would been less salty.

    Taking away is so much worse than not having it from beginning.

    To be fair, as I've said, Nintendo of America has never done dual audio on its own. It's always NoE or 8-4, as was the case with Xenoblade and Fire Emblem: Awakening, respectively.

  8. No dual-audio is a shame. I still hope it can return in the Europe version, but I think, unfortunately, it'll not be here too... I was really hopping to hear Kaji Yuki... Oh well, I think I'll be able to get used of the english voices of everybody... Except maybe Effie...

    Come to think of it, none of the Nintendo games Nintendo of America localized included dual audio. It's always been either 8-4 (Fire Emblem: Awakening), Nintendo of Europe (Xenoblade Chronicles, Rhythm Heaven Fever, Bayonetta [2] and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water) or Square Enix (Bravely Default). The closest thing I can find to NoA including dual audio is Super Smash Bros. Melee, and even then it's more of a general Japanese language option (text is affected too) and only Jigglypuff and a few of Fox, Falco, Mewtwo, and the announcer's lines (the VAs are the same) are actually affected by it.

    Nintendo of Europe, on the other hand, has had a great track record with dual audio, even going as far to add it in their version of Rhythm Heaven Fever (Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise) and fix the bugs involving it in Fire Emblem: Awakening. Nintendo of America is Atlus-tier with their dual audio at best. So I think you can get your hopes up for dual audio in the PAL version.

    So it might not be licensing or space issues after all. It could be NoA just not giving a hoot.

  9. Well there's been quite a few comments since my last post. Anyways, in response to that English-centric person that wrote a heated comment on my ruminations about why I would not buy anything anymore from NOA, it's not that I hated Awakening or Xenoblade's dub. In fact, I LOVED the British in OG Xenoblade (preferably more than the Japanese, which is rare for me on English over Japanese) and as for XenoX, I don't have the full game but what I've heard by far is mediocre at best. What I was complaining about is that a feature that was present in previous titles (AKA Dual Audio) was removed from later releases as the franchise left the niche territory and became popular. This ticks me off, especially since I'm accustomed to having Dual Audio in at least half of the niche titles that I have played (everything localized by NISA.) It's pretty much the principle that localization feels they should hand-feed us when they're getting more in return, yet they didn't practice this earlier when they weren't getting as much or didn't get as much. If you don't believe, just watch and wait for a single Fatal Frame release to be as much of a hit as Awakening was. I'll bet you that the release after that hit title will include much much less than just a few costume changes.

    For a better analogy, it's pretty much like having a father that's never there for you while you are young, and then all of a sudden you get older and more responsible and suddenly he wants to start parenting you. That's really an asshole move, even more so on the fact that personally speaking, that's exactly the deal with my own father. So yeah, when I feel like I'm being hand-fed something now, but wasn't before, I get skeptical and angry.

    Xenoblade 3D and Xenoblade X only lost dual audio because of space limitations. Nothing more, nothing less.

    I was one of the people positive there'd be dual audio from the start. I thought it was unrealistic to lose expectations based on just Xenoblade X.

    But for the doubters' sake, I asked. And I received an answer. And it was disappointing.

    That was enough for me to crack and realize it wasn't going to be there. And that I should have had less idealistic and more realistic expectations.

    Don't believe me? Fine. But if you e-mail them yourself, you'll get the same answer...

    XCX's dub is top-notch.

    You should honestly just accept that some people aren't going to believe it's real, until Nintendo comes and officially makes an announcement about this. I personally don't doubt that it's a real email, but as it hasn't been announced by them themselves, I still hold doubt as to whether they're actually doing it.

    I mean, people are always going to be skeptical and I don't blame them for being skeptical - back when the whole skinship situation happened, there was a slur of emails that people got back from Nintendo that either said they didn't know anything about whether it was in, or they stated that it wasn't. During that time, it's hard to tell who was telling the truth because it sounded like some people knew and some people didn't. Obviously we know the truth now thanks to the IGN podcast.

    So in this case, the email could very well be legitimate, but who's to say this isn't another case of he said/she said? There's only so much you can prove based on the email that you provided, but people will inevitably still be suspicious.

    Eh I never used it in Awakening, and I doubt I'll use it here if it exists.

    I'm almost certain it's a hoax tho, because US Fates is larger file wise than Japanese Fates.

    Normally I'd wish it was out, so I could watch the world burn, but I got enough of that with the Skinship removal reveal

    That's a shame. I hate knowing something is true and not being believed just because someone else cried wolf.

    And it's not a hoax; I promise you. I just wish there was something I could do to prove it.

  12. I wasn't going to use the JP audio either way, but i'll wait for the release/an official statement before making a judgement.

    Sorry but a random poster from gamefaqs isn't a good source, and given the misinformation and confusion about this freaking game we have already had I reserve the right to be skeptical.

    Look, I understand why you are skeptical. But I want to give proof. Please tell me what I can do.

    Uh, what?

    Awakening, Xenoblade, and Xenoblade X have godly voice acting. Why would you even want dual audio for them? Adam Howden could carry an entire game by himself, much less with a rockin' cast with him. In X, Caitlin Glass brought her total A game. Why would you want to wish that away?

    Now Fates? It isn't looking amazing, but it's still serviceable. I on principle disagree with dual audio though. English voice work is pretty much always better except for something like Sword Art Online, which had a laughable dub. Bringing something like Xenoblade up only hurts your argument.

    EDIT: it's also why PxZ2 has me on the fence: no English voices afaik. No Carina Reeves as Fiora is a pretty big deal breaker, as is no Mercer or Bailey, and it had Igiari instead of Objection.

    Because some people have gotten it into their heads that all subs automatically > dubs. Not that I can blame them, with all the subpar dubs that have been handed to them for about a decade. But times have changed. Dubs have much higher standards now. And not just in video games; in anime too. FUNimation and Viz have been top-notch as of late.

    I agree: the dubs of Awakening, Xenoblade and Xenoblade X are of that quality. And as you said, while Fates' dub has indeed taken a noticeable drop in quality, whether because of budget cuts or otherwise, it's still serviceable.

    So while I don't think we should judge people if they would like to listen to the original Japanese audio, I also don't think they should make this much of a fuss if it's not present. Perhaps look at the dub with an open mind instead of comparing it to the Japanese audio or the dub days of old?
