Whatever "edge" I seem to have in my 101 class in pronunciation or reading ability is just a complete fluke from years of watching animé or playing games. Like I mentioned to Miyake-sensei on our first day of class, I used to watch a lot of shows as kid like 名探偵コナン or ドラえもん. Later, I would begin to play imported Japanese games like ファイアーエムブレム: 聖戦の系譜 and watching shows such as のだめカンタービレ. In the end, I did pick up a couple of phrases, and I have a lot of auditory experience with listening to Japanese, but since I'd just pay attention to the English subtitles (or, in the case of the games, ignore the text entirely), it's not like I actually learned anything. You can confirm with Miyake-sensei that my hiragana handwriting leaves much to be desired, which, I believe, should be as good as any reason to prove I've never taken or studied Japanese before. It's my first time studying this language with a teacher or a textbook, and I'm just really happy that I can pursue Japanese at Emory. FUCK EVERYTHING.
