If you're good with the buttons the level and equipment won't be missed that much, but with Mario as a burden avoiding attacks will be more of a pain. Or do whatever you like as long as you don't abandon it halfway through the game. Speaking of which, I beat the forest. 100%ing it was actually not too bad, since I found most areas (and the earth dragon) myself, I just looked up a map to get the remaining few areas, which were all on the way to the Dark Crusader.
