Hard subtitles: Subtitles merged into the video images. Therefore, a hardsubbed video file will be composed of only the video itself and one or more audio tracks; you can't disable those subtitles even if you wanted to. Soft subtitles: Subtitles are loaded from a different file. A softsubbed movie file will be composed of video, audio and subtitle tracks. Because the subtitles are loaded separately, they can be disabled or even not run at all if there are software/codec issues. This thread is never getting renamed back.
