Although Kill 'em All Tomino did direct it... The kid was shot in the head with a beam weapon. Or a rocket. Jury's been out on that one for decades. Any Giant Robot anime from the late 70's and early 80's looks like that, and Tomino was FAR more brutal with Ideon than he EVER was with Gundam. Plus there are no Gundams in the entire series.
