I started with the first gen when I was like.. 5 or 6? I have fond memories of beating Brock with Pikachu's Quick Attack on Yellow. Not like competitive battling and etc. In that case, I don't see how the 2nd gen can lose. Competitively, 4th gen wins. 2nd gen battles took like an average of 200 turns. Aside from some music (Champion Battle and Victory Road/Pokemon League and a few Pokemon, in RSE). On a side note, the first one was known to be glitchy. I know it isn't much of a difference... and besides, I seldom have patience to build teams now, since I play solo. So, the fact you can get both Charmander and Squirtle doesn't really matter.
