Ike-Mike
I'm trying to put an unique spin on Fire Emblem that borrows from the sort-of new and special challenge that many people do in Pokémon. The rules I'm using are as follows: Only the first character(s) that join in a chapter will be used. No chapter reset when an unit dies, the exception being when a Lord does so. Only one of each item can be bought in each shop. You may only deploy 6 units in a given chapter. Feel free to suggest more rules that are in spirit of the original Nuzlocke challenge while I'll continue my playthrough as well as try to do your own FE Nuzlocke runs. I've currently stopped at chapter 4 and all I have to say is that I was suprised that Wil automatically joins you a few turns later if you haven't visited his village. Since Florina joined first that means no Wil for the rest of the game, or at least Lyn's Mode. I didn't send him out to die but I stripped his bow off and let him vegetate around in the sidelines. Tables
Perhaps explaining the Nuzlocke challenge in Pokemon might be a good idea? Then we have a better idea what the challenge is like.
Ike-Mike
Pokémon Nuzlocke comes with two 'official' rules: You may only catch the first Pokémon of each area ('Area' meaning each new route, town, cave, etc.). If a Pokémon's HP drop to zero then it's permanently dead. Not mandatory but everyone does it anyway: Nickname your Pokémon. There are a lot of other unofficial rules to make it even more unique and challenging more but those 2/3 are the really mandatory ones.
Tables
Hmm... I'm not sure how well these kind of rules apply to Fire Emblem. It's not like you don't get enough characters and not restarting shouldn't be a problem unless you get RNG screwed. Only one of each item might make things a little more interesting but there's probably enough shops throughout the game.
Ike-Mike
I felt that Nuzlocke shouldn't be exclusive to Pokémon, so I decided to try it out with my next favorite video game series. That, and I wanted to replay FE7 since I haven't played that one in a while. There really might be enough shops throughout the game but at least it'd teach you not to overstock on everything. I suppose the 'nickname everything' rule could apply to FEs with forging where you have to buy forges in every chapter (or in RD exclusively forges) and name them, even if it means that you don't give them any stat boosts. Ike-Mike
Just like in Chapter 2 I was also slightly surprised that Matthew joined you either way in Chapter 6 no matter if you visited his village or not. Naturally, since using him is against the rules, I stripped him off his Iron Sword and Lockpick and went on by killing those few units who drop Door Keys. I had to miss out on the Angelic Robe though. In Chapter 7 I had to drop Lucius in favor of Nils. As a member of the Lucius Fan Club this aggraviates me but the purpose of Nuzlocke is to find new merits in units that you don't really like using or wouldn't even have thought of using in the first place. I tried to kill off the normal Shaman on the lower half of the map with Florina which turned into a battle with both a low HP and Florina's next hit deciding whether she will survive or not. Seeing as she had 96% true hit I decided to do it ... turns out Florina died. The rest of Lyn's Mode went along very smoothly, though it took me a while to take Lundgren out. ---- Lyn's Mode Results Fallen Units: Florina Forbidden Units: Wil Matthew Lucius ---- With Hector's Mode I'm adding a new rule that should be in spirit of Pokémon Nuzlocke: You may only deploy 6 units in a given chapter. I'm also thinking about adding a "The first 6 units you choose are permanent and will be replaced with someone else if one unit dies" sub-rule but I'd like to hear feedback on that one. Either way Chapter 11 was a very straightforward affair and I was happy to be able to use Matthew now. I'm quite unsure on whether Oswin and Serra technically join you at the end of Ch11 or at the beginning of Ch12, so I wasn't using them so far. Ch12 was straightforward enough to only use Hector, Matthew, Marcus and Eliwood. ---- Current Status (Chapter 12) Fallen Units: None Forbidden Units: Oswin(?) Serra(?) Ike-Mike
I figured out with Dio that it's alright to use Oswin and Serra so ... I managed to visit Merlinus' village and recruit Guy in chapter 13. However, in the rush to complete the chapter quickly and recruit him at the same time Matthew died in battle. In 13x I went with Marcus to the upper right village while Hector, Eliwood, Guy and Oswin protected the three (four) briges surrounding Merlinus. If there were a little more of those 4 guys needed to protect a specific bridge I did send out the remaining units as a replacement. Dorcas died that way. In chapter 14 I had somewhat of a dilemma on whether I should've chosen Erk over Priscilla or not. In the end I decided for Erk since I already had a healer and was in dire need for a mage. Ch16 was pretty easy in that next to the 6 units I deployed I was also able to use all of Lyn's army, except that Florina died ... again. I replaced Marcus and Oswin with Erk and Sain from Ch17 onward. I found it really fun and interesting to play Ch17 without being able to open everything with Matthew and recruit Raven, so for extra shits and giggles I decided not to fight the reinforcements that came from behind and made it a race against time until they arrive to the throne room instead. I leveled Eliwood up in the arena in 17x since he was Level 11 and not 15 like everyone else. I had Eliwood and Hector block the right side of the map in chapter 18 while Lyn and Sain went to snatch the Guiding Ring and defeat the boss. Now onto the Dread Isle ... !! Current Status (Chapter 18) Fallen Units: Matthew Dorcas Florina Forbidden Units: Erk Priscilla Raven Lucius The bolded units are the ones I decided not to use.
