And a couple days later:

GEOSCAPE: THE RETURN

----------

geoscape_176.png

We leave Oklahoma, a proud people.

geoscape_177.png

geoscape_178.png

geoscape_180.png

Fucking FINALLY. Congratulations, Kitty, you've been promoted to Heavy Plasma. This shit is basically the best man-portable weapon you can get your hands on without going explosive.

geoscape_179.png

Going to divert the research towards, y'know, game-winning prospects. Plus, I don't remember what we decided on researching next so I'll call the vote again. Weapons? Armor? Propulsion? Tanks?

geoscape_181.png

Ah, there we are. I only have AVALANCHE missiles stocked at Echidnation.

geoscape_182.png

geoscape_183.png

While refitting INTERCEPTOR-1, I remember to restock the Ranger. Heavy Cannon out, Heavy Plasma in. Furet is also added to the crew hold.

geoscape_184.png

Alien interrogations are generally fast.

geoscape_185.png

hee hee, he's naked

geoscape_186.png

I get started on that, too. The reason I'm doing this is there's a certain point in the research (I believe it's after Alien Origins) where you need to get a Commander or Leader to continue the end-game research. I also need a Commander or Leader for Psionics, so I may as well double it up.

geoscape_187.png

Looks like your first assignment, Furet.

geoscape_188.png

Right next to us, too.

geoscape_189.png

geoscape_190.png

dun dun dun dundundundunnan DANANA

geoscape_191.png

fuck you, gulf of mexico.

geoscape_192.png

Ooh, a LARGE UFO. That means Terror or Infiltration, and likely means Commander.

geoscape_193.png

geoscape_194.png

What the flying fuck? I put like fifteen extra Stingray missiles in Inn'n'Out. Why is this bitch low supplies? Standoff range, shadow him. I'll go get INTERCEPTOR-1 to-

geoscape_195.png

motherfucker.

geoscape_196.png

geoscape_197.png

Terror mission! And don't forget, give me research topics. Weapons, armors, planes, tanks.

Actually, Soren, I'm pretty sure you were joking but researching propulsion and armor results in jetpacks.

----------

So I'm pretty sure I'm going to delve into a LP for the Mission Pack Sequel after this one is over. That will be hilarious, because I've never played it before. :awesome:

----------

This'll take two posts because this is gonna be a fucking gigantic TACTICAL update. Also, Drinking Game! In a Terror Mission, take a drink every time the screenshot consists entirely of an agent panicking/berzerking/being mind controlled. Take two if it's Kitty.

----------

tactical_188.png

Welcome to London, agents.

tactical_189.png

This is a fucking gigantic building to go along with the fucking gigantic update. Yeow.

tactical_190.png

And we open with Hoverdiscs. Hoverdiscs means Sectoids. Sectoids means psionics. ugh. Fun times.

tactical_191.png

Skitarii manages to blow up the gas station at least.

tactical_192.png

tactical_193.png

tactical_194.png

Even if he, Baster AND Balcerzak manage to not kill it.

tactical_195.png

CONTACT: PRIDE.

tactical_196.png

pew pew

tactical_197.png

Baster got it this time.

tactical_198.png

Tank makes a loooooooong damn shot.

tactical_199.png

Soren blows open a wall and finds out it's just a fucking gigantic fence. Plus, enemy.

tactical_200.png

LIGHTNING. BZZT.

tactical_201.png

and the Psykers act. Fun times start!

tactical_202.png

Well THAT was quite the run. Her gear is up by the tank near the top.

tactical_203.png

hmm. Let's save this guy for stunning!

tactical_204.png

Balcerzak scavenges Kitty's Heavy Plasma. Incidentally, now that we've researched Heavy Plasma we can loot it from aliens in the field. You get everything that's dropped automatically if you win, but if you grab it during the battle, well, you can use it before then.

tactical_205.png

HO NOW that was close.

tactical_206.png

Evidently the civilians decided they were safe in here.

tactical_207.png

SHIT SOREN

tactical_208.png

...

Well. FURETCHEN, WE NEEDS YOU

tactical_209.png

AHHHHHHHH

tactical_210.png

What's with our agents surviving with One Fatal Wound To An Arm?

tactical_211.png

tactical_212.png

Baster takes some shots, to no effect.

tactical_213.png

tactical_214.png

Ah, the third stage of psionics. Fortunately, the AI won't get gear off the ground and Kitty already Panicked and dropped all her shit. Notice how she's now flagged as an enemy. If she survives this turn and the mind control is not renewed, she'll return to our control in whatever state she's in, minus a bunch of morale. There's also a bug where agents who are actively mind-controlled at the end of a mission, even if victorious, will be flagged as MIA and you lose them forever. XCOMUTIL might patch that, but I dunno.

tactical_215.png

Lightning, blocked by the crush of people, makes himself a door.

tactical_216.png

Baster spots the aliens for...

tactical_217.png

Balcerzak and his new looted Heavy Plasma.

tactical_218.png

What the fuck? I can see him but there's no line of fire?

tactical_219.png

tactical_220.png

Backed off a square and fired a Snap Shot. It's good.

tactical_221.png

Well, we know the commander's still alive. We'll try to stun him!

tactical_222.png

Balcerzak appears to have panicked. :(

tactical_223.png

You know, guys, let it be said: I fucking HATE Cyberdiscs. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate CYBERDISCS!!!!!

tactical_224.png

Perfectly predictable.

tactical_225.png

FUCK. DID NOT EXPECT.

tactical_226.png

...

OH GOD SKITARII MAKE A DOOR AND RUN

tactical_227.png

Skitarii makes a door and gets shot at. EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE WALL HE'S HIDING BEHIND gets destroyed. That's unnatural.

tactical_228.png

Well I hope that guy wasn't the commander, because he just died to the tank's reaction fire.

tactical_229.png

tactical_230.png

holy shit this guy actually hurt the tank.

tactical_231.png

Ah well. Lightning was nearby.

tactical_232.png

What's this, three?

tactical_233.png

YEAH BABY

tactical_234.png

Balcerzak gets a new alien heavy plasma. It's not his old one, but oh well.

tactical_235.png

Feeling tipsy yet?

tactical_236.png

lul his luck was too much for his fragile little head

tactical_237.png

tactical_238.png

I have the awesome idea to make Furetchen run over and grab Skitarii's plasma rifle.

tactical_239.png

He panicked into the line of sight of a Cyberdisc. Well fuck me.

tactical_240.png

OH JINKIES

tactical_241.png

it's cool. Soren takes the shot and it's good.

tactical_242.png

tactical_243.png

So many aliens in this corner.

tactical_244.png

So THAT'S where Kitty's been running to.

tactical_245.png

oh God. Fatigue is starting to set in. This is where I stop downplaying Stamina as an attribute to you guys.

tactical_246.png

...

I could just cry right now.

tactical_247.png

Inevitable reaction fire on the tank.

tactical_248.png

tactical_249.png

Lucky civilian and unnaturally lucky Skitarii.

tactical_250.png

:awesome:

tactical_251.png

AHAHA they blew the poor fucker up. Adios, civilianos.

tactical_252.png

bzzt

tactical_253.png

Let's try to handle these Cyberdiscs finally.

tactical_254.png

First, though, Skitarii runs away. Now I explain a problem with XCOM's pathfinding:

When you order somebody to run through a room in a multi-story house, and there are stairs in the way, they will fairly often decide to go up a floor and run to the equivalent stair up a floor instead. This wastes tremendous amounts of energy and time units and, well, leaves a unit where you don't want them. Tarii did this.

Well, actually, it took three. Sorry, you have posted more images than you are allowed to.

----------

tactical_255.png

Whew.

tactical_256.png

I don't even remember how many of these I took.

tactical_257.png

WHAT. THE TANK DIED?!

tactical_258.png

Ah well. It spotted for Baster's EXPLODING ALIEN TANK shot.

tactical_259.png

Godspeed, Balcerzak.

tactical_260.png

That did NOT work.

tactical_261.png

Furet shoots through a wall and sees aliens and kills them dead.

tactical_262.png

So does Pride except for the through a wall business.

tactical_263.png

Tarii is armed again!

tactical_264.png

...

Well, that's Pride.

tactical_265.png

tactical_266.png

Lightning makes a window and spots everything.

tactical_267.png

Then he avenges Pride for good measure.

tactical_268.png

Baster avenges Balcerzak. We're even now.

tactical_269.png

That was an even more impressive explosion than the last one. It even set fire to the house!

tactical_270.png

Lightning and Furetchen ruin the walls so I have a place to look in. I see nothing.

tactical_271.png

Lightning goes up a floor and sees...nothing. Then I have him look out the window. Seems one of our stunned aliens woke up minus any gear.

tactical_272.png

Kitty finally arrives at the action and loots poor dead Pride's stun rod.

tactical_273.png

hi.

tactical_274.png

bzzt

tactical_275.png

Lightning makes himself a hole in the wall, floor and ceiling of the next floor...

tactical_276.png

and falls through it. Shortcut!

tactical_277.png

I bet you didn't see THAT coming. Smashed yet?

tactical_278.png

I spend the next ten turns (no, seriously) trying to find the last alien. He could be hiding in here...

tactical_279.png

...but he's not. Yes, those waist-high hedges block movement. Tarii had to kill one.

tactical_280.png

Turn 18: THERE HE IS

tactical_281.png

bzzt

----------

geoscape_198.png

Gyeh. So many dead civilians ruin our rating but at least we got three live aliens.

geoscape_199.png

...

AND I MISSED THE FUCKING COMMANDER. AGH

Yes, I was actually.

And let's count the number of drinks.

Furet- 1 drink from him.

Skitarii- 1 drink from them.

Spectakitty-16 drinks just from them.

So I'd say everyone would be out of it for a couple of days.

Holy crap, I'm getting everyone totally smashed. o:

You all can thank me later.

You have one, Integer. He was idling in the base due to lack of space on the 'Ranger, but now that people have died ... :P

So anyway, for reals an update!

----------

geoscape_200.png

geoscape_201.png

First step: success! Building complete!

geoscape_202.png

Just looks so pitiful, you know? Five guys and no tank. :(

geoscape_203.png

Levin, Integer, welcome to eternity.

geoscape_204.png

geoscape_205.png

Things arrive.

geoscape_206.png

on the first of April! We did EXCELLENT this month, X-COM!

geoscape_207.png

Ooh, it's a day of pleasant surprises.

geoscape_208.png

I dunno, we seem to mostly be winning.

geoscape_209.png

The voting pretty much said Planes, but I'm taking a quick diversion to get the Mind Probe. The Mind Probe allows an agent to see the stats of any alien any other agent can see. This is only marginally useful, except that you also get their class. Next Leader I run into after researching this bitch I'll be able to snag. I should have gotten this WAY earlier.

geoscape_213.png

eh, small UFOs.

geoscape_214.png

...over...Nigeria.

geoscape_215.png

geoscape_216.png

dun dun dun PSHEW BOOM

Now, I'm going to leave the crashsite because it's in the daylight and by the time I get there it'll be night. I don't want an Arabian Night, so if we leave the US in the day we should catch Nigeria also in the day.

geoscape_217.png

We get the tank back while we wait.

geoscape_218.png

geoscape_219.png

A NEW CHALLENGER APPEARS

geoscape_220.png

geoscape_221.png

Close to home. By the time the Ranger gets back and refuels it'll probably have disappeared. Ah well.

geoscape_222.png

tactical_001.png

----------

EDIT: Oh yeah, stats!

[spoiler=this "D" character]geoscape_210.png

I named him MID-BOSS, saved, and loaded because that's what you need to do for UFO Classes. Somehow, in the process, his name got changed to D. Weird.

Poor to average everything, with bottomed Bravery and one point of Firing Accuracy above bottom. Hoo boy. I'll be throwing this guy at shit for fun.

[spoiler=Balcerzak's new stats]geoscape_211.png

Marginally better than D. At least his Strength is REALLY good, but he's not winning me any battles.

[spoiler=the new Pride]geoscape_212.png

VERY above-average. I'm reminded of Kitty's original stats here. He could use a little Bravery is all, but still.

:D

I'm glad I can finally give back a little morning amusement to you, Eclipse. Of course you can have a redshirt.

Can't promise his stats'll be bad though. I mean, look at JOEY ffs.

----------

Update time!

----------

tactical_282.png

Good news, X-COM. We landed in the green part of Africa.

tactical_283.png

I love reaction fire while I'm still on the 'Ranger's offramp, don't you?

tactical_284.png

tactical_285.png

Oh, SHIT. These motherfuckers are Snakemen. Snakemen, honestly, aren't all that bad. They seem to have higher durability than Sectoids and they use the same weaponry, but their terror weapon is vastly, VASTLY worse than Cyberdiscs could ever be.

VASTLY.

tactical_286.png

tactical_287.png

pew pew misses. Welcome to combat, Integer and Levin.

tactical_288.png

While they're at that, Skitarii decides to professionally miss the lower Snakeman.

tactical_289.png

Dear Pride, on the other hand, hits him square in the back.

tactical_290.png

Unfortunately, he SURVIVES, turns around, and fires a reaction shot.

tactical_291.png

It missed and Baster walked casually off the 'Ranger to kill it with lasers.

tactical_292.png

Lightniiiiing, my man! I knew I could count on you!

To give you a short indication of Lightning's awesome, holding a two-handed weapon in one hand and another weapon in the other gives you a decent accuracy penalty. Rifles are two-handed weapons. Lightning hit with one hand what Levin and Integer couldn't with two each. Booyah.

tactical_293.png

A dramatic shot of the Imperial Stormtrooper Marksman Brigade, backed up by Sergeant Kitty.

tactical_294.png

Holy CHRIST Furetchen can run. He went from inside the 'Ranger (pictured lower-right) to his current position under the floating arrow in one turn.

tactical_295.png

Breaching time! That's a job for the Level X Shock.

tactical_296.png

Oh, FUCK.

tactical_297.png

Go out with a bang. Godspeed, my friend.

tactical_298.png

Well hey at least he killed one before he --

tactical_299.png

IT MISSED

tactical_300.png

Levin scoots out of the way, Lightning runs in. You know what time it is.

tactical_301.png

bzzt

----------

geoscape_223.png

BOOM! A perfect mission. Obviously, there wasn't much to perfect so "perfect" is actually just OK, but still. GOOD JOB.

geoscape_224.png

Congratulations are in order, Sergeant.

The so-called doglike creature is the terror unit for Floaters, as I recall.

The terror unit for Snakemen is the Chryssalid.

----------

I've now hit 500 pictures uploaded into the LP folder. I misplaced one of the early updates, so it's actually a few more, but hey. Milestone!

----------

geoscape_225.png

I was curious and checked. We picked up the Snakemanses Navigator! We can research him for the ultimate radar anytime.

geoscape_226.png

That crash site's still there but I don't really care. Frankly, we're doing well enough for money I'll probably start leaving aliens to crash and die more.

geoscape_227.png

Still there in the morning, tempting me.

geoscape_228.png

geoscape_229.png

ooh! This is Inn'n'Out's second Hangar! That means they get a 'Ranger for the B-Team.

geoscape_230.png

hmm

geoscape_231.png

Okay, SOMETHING'S up with the Middle East. I've got to learn what.

geoscape_232.png

geoscape_233.png

geoscape_234.png

I shadow it for a while and learn absolutely fuck-all. It landed outside of Ankara and waited for about three hours then flew off.

geoscape_235.png

Now the B-Team can mobilize!

geoscape_236.png

fuck yes. Research and manufacture are determined in Man Hours. Actually, Research is measured in Man Days, but it's the same thing times a few. Anyway, each Scientist assigned to a project adds one Man Day to the total at midnight each night. Each Laboratory has the space to allow 50 Scientists to research - that's 50 Man Days. By building another Laboratory, I've doubled our capacity for research! Actually, Scientists cost a fuckton, so I can only get 25 right now, but the point's made.

geoscape_237.png

25 Scientists, as promised.

geoscape_238.png

OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK

geoscape_239.png

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

geoscape_240.png

This is what it looks like when you pile two Interceptors onto a single alien ship. You can get up to four at a time and this is necessary for Very Large ships - also know as Battleships. I'm afraid of Battleships because their primary function is Base Raids. Yes. THEY ATTACK YOU.

geoscape_241.png

It's still alive. It takes three Interceptors to reliably take a Battleship down with conventional weaponry. I need new craft.

geoscape_242.png

geoscape_243.png

geoscape_244.png

We chase it around and lose it over the Atlantic. The things are also God-awfully fast.

geoscape_245.png

hm. That's awkward.

geoscape_246.png

what.

geoscape_247.png

geoscape_248.png

Either they come in peace or they're buying a government. Only the first of May can tell.

geoscape_249.png

geoscape_250.png

geoscape_251.png

...or they're flying over Vancouver for some reason.

geoscape_252.png

Refueling.

geoscape_253.png

geoscape_254.png

Missile and Scientists. Yeah baby.

geoscape_255.png

A Large UFO!

geoscape_256.png

:(

geoscape_257.png

Inn'n'Out is being set up as my manufacturing capital.

geoscape_258.png

Medium!

geoscape_259.png

...

Of COURSE I shoot it down over Tehran. Why the fuck not.

geoscape_260.png

geoscape_261.png

A Very Small UFO I can't even catch.

Some savescumming was used in the production of this episode. Kitty actually died a few times and the tank did once, but they kept getting saved because there was one turn that would cause the game to hang on the EP. I had to have Kitty make a kill on an alien that would kill her if she missed (this was the savescumming) because if he was still alive at the end of Turn 15 or whatever, the game hung. So, uh, yeah.

----------

tactical_302.png

Always good to come off the 'Ranger and see smoke.

tactical_303.png

Smoke and Floaters!

tactical_304.png

Man, we fucked that UFO right up the wrong way. Incidentally, that red square is an alien elevator. This is a two-story UFO.

tactical_305.png

tactical_306.png

well fuck. should've turned south with the tank. Levin died. Look on the bright side: your next incarnation will be better than a Level X Shock!

tactical_307.png

Yeap, there he is.

tactical_308.png

gg integer

tactical_309.png

Tarii knocks off the first spotted one.

tactical_310.png

tactical_311.png

Pride makes a friggin' epic shot.

tactical_312.png

tactical_313.png

EP: One alien moves around and another narrowly misses somebody.

tactical_314.png

tactical_315.png

tactical_316.png

Tank spots this guy and blows up the hedge. Pride puts some plasma through the new hole and kills the Floater.

tactical_317.png

tactical_318.png

Baster takes a reaction shot and kills a guy. Score.

tactical_319.png

Bet we can stun that guy.

tactical_320.png

tactical_321.png

Perfect toss!

tactical_322.png

tactical_323.png

oookay, there was another one. Kitty hightails it out of the UFO while Lightning fucking kills them both.

tactical_324.png

tactical_325.png

Baster takes another reaction shot at another Floater and...he survives?

tactical_326.png

Turns out he had an alien rocket launcher. FUCK. Nothing to be done about that. GG Baster. :/

Good news is I had no other agents near him, so it's only one casualty.

tactical_327.png

tactical_328.png

tactical_329.png

Tarii (yes, the sniper) fucking misses twice. Furet (the drunken medic, we expect it) also misses. EVEN FUCKING LIGHTNING misses this guy.

tactical_330.png

Kitty's second shot in a burst of three gets him.

tactical_331.png

Integer scouts all the buildings and finds a third alien. Bet we CAN stun that guy.

tactical_332.png

Unfortunately, the poor dumb bastard put his back to a door on the next EP.

bzzt

tactical_333.png

tactical_334.png

Tarii takes a reaction shot and hits once. The Floater survives. Oh, fuck.

tactical_335.png

I think we know where this is going. Goddammit. :(

tactical_336.png

Integer survives the trip up the alien elevator! The bastards like to camp the top side so that when you come out, they take free shots.

tactical_337.png

He does not, however, survive the mission. Okay, Floaters officially SUCK.

tactical_338.png

The dude did, however, squirrel himself away in a corner so

bzzt

tactical_339.png

Remember this poor fucker who already got shot by Tarii? The tank hits him TWICE directly.

tactical_340.png

And then misses a lot more. It takes a surprise maneuver from

tactical_341.png

Pride to kill it.

tactical_342.png

lol he woke up

tactical_343.png

bzzt

tactical_344.png

Now this is the aftermath of the aforementioned savescum. I save at the beginning of almost every turn because DOSbox's screenshot key is CTRL-F5. The "immediately close all DOSbox" key is CTRL-F6. I've slipped up and lost progress on a few updates before.

Anyway, Kitty has a 26% chance on each shot of a 3-round burst to kill that dude behind the chair. If she misses all three - which is actually unlikely and I'll explain why in a minute - he takes reaction fire and likely kills her. The problem is, for some reason, if he was alive at the end of the turn the game would hang on the EP and I didn't have a save from before that turn to go back to. Answer? Park Kitty in the door, save, reload until I kill him. Dirty and shameful but necessary.

The reason the 26% is more than it sounds is because that's the chance for a perfect hit. In other words, if the roll is below 26 the shot is guaranteed to fly straight to the target. If it rolls anything else, the shot is still ballistically modeled with a random offset from slight to massive. At a short range like this, several of the offsets you roll on a miss will still see the shot straight into the target. This is why at point-blank range, it's almost impossible to miss even with something pathetic like a 14% to hit: because even if you miss, the shot is very very likely to miss straight into your target anyway.

tactical_345.png

Anyway, our final alien is spotted and the tank lands a damn fine shot.

----------

geoscape_263.png

That DIDN'T go as well as I'd hoped. I lost two of my best shots until Joey's out of rehab, I lost some inconsequential Shocks (you're replaceable.) and many of my rolls were...fucktarded. Oh well, live and learn.
