Florete
For things like this we're usually given words to remember the order of things. In this case, it's "PEMDAS". The only thing that remains after that is to recall that M&D are equal in precedence level with the same being true for A&S. I wasn't taught PEMDAS until about a couple months ago in my current college math class, oddly enough. I was actually taught it as a mnemonic for "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally." Though I've known order of operations for years anyway, so it's not like I needed it. And yeah, I got 288 on my first attempt.

Paperblade
My trolling attempts were more transparent than I thought ;/ Nah I just see this kind of shit all the time. ;/ Normally it's for people who don't even know PEMDAS and just put Multiplication and Addition on the same level though. Edit: if you want to troll with this successfully try WoW Edited April 12, 2011 by Paperblade

Parrhesia
I got two. It wasn't so much thinking Division went before multiplication (I don't think I was ever taught that) but...well, Grade Ten was extremely heavily saturated with algebra, and so I thought of 2x12 as a composite entity already. ...That and I'm pretty mediocre with math to start with, so... Fenrir
you do the operation in parenthesis first, then 48 divided by 2, then the number in parenthesis is treated as a multiplier. so it should be: 48/2(9+3) 48/2(12) 24(12) which is treated as 24 x 12 = 288 simple math. at least that's how I was taught to do it. agreed
