Galenforcer
I've always been hearing how sequels are worse than their predecessor, but are there sequels that are better than the original? I'm making this because my friend argues how the original's always the best, and everything after it is just not as good.
Nightmare
Megaman Legends 2, Terminator 2, Mortal Kombat II, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 2, etc. etc. Those are all god sequels.
NinjaMonkey
I've always been hearing how sequels are worse than their predecessor, but are there sequels that are better than the original? Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations is a lot better than the original game (and is considered by many to be the best in the Ace Attorney series - including me). I was under the impression that he was mostly talking about sequels to the original. In which case, Justice For All sucks ass.

Fixed. Oh and Donkey Kong Country 2 is unquestionably better than the first game because of the pirate theme. Nightmare
Fixed. Sorry Apollo Justice is way better than JFA, your fix doesn't make sense.
Florete
I don't think anyone would give the original FE the time of day anymore. Personally, I get sick when I hear people talk about how "originals" are always best, liking old stuff for being old, and that sort of thing. Oh and Donkey Kong Country 2 is unquestionably better than the first game because of the pirate theme. Too true. Strawman
Just games, or movies too? I would argue Toy Story 3 is the best Toy Story.
NinjaMonkey
Sorry Apollo Justice is way better than JFA, your fix doesn't make sense. You're kidding right? AJ is way too easy, the last two cases are full of plot holes and the tutorial case is considered to be the best case in the game...

EDIT: I guess I phrased this badly, but I actually want to know since I didn't notice any. Also, AAI is easier and yet, it's a superior game. Emeraldfox
An example that I can think of sequels being better than the original is Pokemon.
Excellen Browning
In movies and books, usually the first is OH MY GOD I CAME, the second is utter shit and the third is a return to form.
Just call me AL
I'd say it depends on the saga in question. If it's something like The Godfather, the sequel could arguably be as good as the original. With Valkyria Chronicles 2, it's a YMMV thing. (I personally think it's better in most aspects except for the effort needed to to get every hidden class potential and the permadeath removal.) The original TLOZ, while a good game, is rather outdated. (But I think its difficulty makes up for being outdated.) Alttp, and OoT are better than it, that's certain. Same goes for the original SMB, good game, but it's pretty much outdone by now. Dragonball? DBZ helped popularize it, but DBGT stank. So much so that an MMO is now considered to have the events of what happens after DBZ ends. Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Prime 3, and Metroid Fusion are all better than than the original Metroid. But I think Metroid Other M is a YMMV case. But really though. It all depends. In some cases, the original is better. In some cases, sequels are better.
NinjaMonkey
What plot holes? EDIT: I guess I phrased this badly, but I actually want to know since I didn't notice any. Just taking case 3 into account: The prosecutions case is that Machi Tobaye struggled with Romein LeTouse, stole his 45-Caliber gun, shot LeTouse, escaped through the air vent and sometime later dragged LeTouse's body over to the stage area. Now first of all, LeTouse is a very big guy and is a lot stronger than Machi is (who by the way is only 14). Ergo, there isn't any realistic way that Machi could over power LeTouse. Secondly, the gun used to kill LeTouse is a 45-Caliber revolver that delivers a large amount recoil when fired. Now, Machi has no experience of firing weapons, so if he did kill LeTouse he would seriously injure himself (You remember of course that the true killer, who does indeed have experience with firearms, injures himself whilst shooting LeTouse). Finally, according to the prosecution, Machi is supposed to have dragged LeTouse to the stage in order to make it appear that he was following the lyrics to 'The Guitar's Serenade'. Now as I have previously stated above, LeTouse is a behemoth of a man, whilst Machi is only a boy. There is no way in hell that Machi could do this, yet the prosecutions thinks that this is entirely possible. Also, AAI is easier and yet, it's a superior game. That's because playing as Edgeworth is awesome! Edited August 5, 2011 by NinjaMonkey
Nightmare
*stuff* I want to know the case 4 plot holes, actually. The case 3 one is obvious, though I don't remember anything about dragging LeTouse's body, but never mind that.
Anouleth
I think that's mentioned a few times, but it's considered that Malachi is the "only one who could have done it" more than anything else. Weak, I know, but the Japanese justice system seems to be really screwed up in those games.
Original Alear
Mario 1 is good. Mario 2 is kinda crap in the US, more of the same goodness in JP. Mario 3 is, IMO, the best in the series except perhaps Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island. In movies and books, usually the first is OH MY GOD I CAME, the second is utter shit and the third is a return to form. I believe many people believe that Empire Strikes Back is better than SW1. But of course this is an exception to a rule that may well hold true more often than not. Still, your statement seems kind of non-evidenced. I would personally say that Judaism and Islaam are both shite compared to Jesus son of god on the cross, note I'm a jew not a christian and I don't plan to convert. Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Prime 3, and Metroid Fusion are all better than than the original Metroid. But I think Metroid Other M is a YMMV case. Metroid 1 is just too hard for me to ever get into it IMO. It's a very interesting, excellent game. Metroid 2...now Metroid 2 I have heard is not so good, so don't forget about that one. The prosecutions case is that Machi Tobaye struggled with Romein LeTouse, stole his 45-Caliber gun, shot LeTouse, escaped through the air vent and sometime later dragged LeTouse's body over to the stage area. Now first of all, LeTouse is a very big guy and is a lot stronger than Machi is (who by the way is only 14). Ergo, there isn't any realistic way that Machi could over power LeTouse. Now as I have previously stated above, LeTouse is a behemoth of a man, whilst Machi is only a boy. There is no way in hell that Machi could do this, yet the prosecutions thinks that this is entirely possible. In the beginning, the prosecution is merely unable to believe that anything else could have done it, given a preponderance of the evidence. After that, the prosecution is just doing it's job to chase the tail end of a dream as Apollo takes things away. It's called Turnabout Courtroom for a reason. I think that's mentioned a few times, but it's considered that Malachi is the "only one who could have done it" more than anything else. Weak, I know, but the Japanese justice system seems to be really screwed up in those games. It's not weak given what seems to be the preponderance of evidence against him at the start... MasterJP28
Megaman Zero has a good story and difficulty. Zero 2 was alright, Zero 3 was better, and 4 was just bad IMO. Also FE Mystery of the Emblem >>> Shadow Dragon, in both original and remake. Pokemon G/S way better than R/B, then it just declined. Melee way better than SSB, and Brawl was slightly better than Melee. It depends, sometimes the sequels are better and sometimes the others are better. Fenrir
TL;DR the whole topic FUCK NO ORIGINALS ARE NOT THE BEST! I've been in this argument so many times, being the original does not make it best.
The Envoy of the Beginning
I just noticed the disturbing lack of Prime 2, which I feel is better than Prime 1 and 3. The masses of Metroid fans think it's garbage. And for some of the silliest reasons ever (limited ammo? That's something to complain about?) Pokemon G/S way better than R/B, then it just declined. Generation V is superior to any other generation.
