FalconVegeta1986
OK, so i'm not too keen on football and what is allowed before, during, or after a game, I also don't know too much about what constitutes good news on yahoo, but it seems like every other article I see on yahoo is about a player getting fined for some random reason, some kinda make sense, but others just seem ridiculous (fined for wearing a hat? Really?) So i'm just wondering if this is something that's common around the football season, or if there's just alot of players who've decided to do stupid stuff and get themselves in trouble. FalconVegeta1986
Doesn't sound like it. Just sounds like bad decision making.
Snapdragon
I dunno, not being much of a foot ball fan. But, I really don't understand why you would bother fining someone $10,000 for wearing skittles shoes and green socks. Who's looking at their feet anyways? buttmuncher.ops
it's the same in basketball. the commissioner's just a douchebag and will fine a player / coach for anything.
Phoenix Wright
It's usually for violating uniform regulations. A couple days ago, a player was fined $10,000 just for wearing Skittle-endorsed cleats. So fucking retarded.
Deliriyum
Ploys to make money. They're over-payed anyways.
Aethereal
it's the same in basketball. the commissioner's just a douchebag and will fine a player / coach for anything. Including calling out Stern for his crap. Which is my favorite thing in the world.
Shuuda
Ploys to make money. They're over-payed anyways. This is pretty much it, and the reason I really can't stand professional athletes. They're basically people who get ridiculous amounts of praise and reward for being well coordinated.
buttmuncher.ops
i lol @ people who feel athletes don't earn the money they get paid and frankly get tired of pointing out why. they're rich but the real wealth lies with the people who write their paychecks. there's NFL owners who have backup yachts for their fucking backup yacht. shit is ridiculous. long story short, competitive sports is quite possibly the most lucrative consumer market (at least in the U.S.A.) athletes give up almost all privacy in their social lives similar to hollywood celebrities; everything from their practices to community service (i.e. NBA Cares) to who they're having dinner with to their games to who's divorcing who is recorded and distributed through the media. but the most important thing these athlete's sacrifice is their health: injuries are prevalent and their bodies sustain heavy wear and tear that an average layman's body would never be able to endure, much less function on a daily due to constant strenuous activity. they also sacrifice this health through the prime years of their youth that a normal person would spend finishing college, finding a career and starting a family. i'm not saying an athlete doesn't get to do any of those three, just that if they do so, they have much more stress, physically and mentally, to deal with than the normal person. i'm also going to throw in a cliche "money doesn't buy happiness" here for those of you that want to say this extra baggage is balanced by a huge paycheck. money can pay for all the surgeries an athlete will need after he retires but no amount of repairs / replacements will ever truly take away the pain of injury or lengthen their organs / muscles lifespans. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers has constantly needed four knee surgeries / procedures since 2003 and has been 15~16 years pro (20~21 years playing basketball competitively if you include high school.) do any of you average a surgery every 2.25 years? expert opinion is that his knee will never fully heal and he plays and practices with pain in all parts of his body every single day. not to mention that a lot of these athletes come from broken homes or communities and never got a proper education on money management; coming up through scholarships based solely off of physical performance in their related sports. so when they splurge on stuff like thousand dollars necklaces and watches, people think they have oodles of cash to spend and misjudge them for it, when some of them just don't know any better. a lot of the stories you don't hear are about the athletes that went bankrupt and ended up homeless even after having continuous million dollar contracts because they simply didn't receive said proper education. all of this plus the fact that you basically become a commodity for the consumer is enough of a reason for a star athlete to get paid as much as they do. if you don't like it, then don't watch the show they put on a daily for the world. that way you don't feed it and maybe they won't charge millions of dollars for a company to display their ads during super bowls / finals etc. that money has to go somewhere. if some of it doesn't go to the star of the show that you enjoy so much, who should it go to? Aethereal
This is pretty much it, and the reason I really can't stand professional athletes. They're basically people who get ridiculous amounts of praise and reward for being well coordinated. They get paid a ton relative to the service they do for the community, but not relative to the work they put in. To put in a small tidbit on what I mean: Kobe's a player that I know a little about. The guy's daily workout, at least until his body stopped allowing him to do it, consisted of 3~ hours of shooting to make 3,000 shots a day. This was his warmup before he lifted weights for several hours, and cooled off on an hour of cardio. He may be an extreme case, but the ridiculous amount of physical stress put in right there; which is disregarding practices, games, ridiculous travel, and incredibly abnormal sleep, is why they get paid so much. Not to mention it's not really their fault that consumers want to spend money to see them play. But I don't think that's really fair to get mad at them when we're on a video game forum. Do you hate Nintendo because they get ridiculous praise and reward for making games? They're both entertainment as far as I'm concerned, and their success is only as good as the entertainment they deliver. money can pay for all the surgeries an athlete will need after he retires but no amount of repairs / replacements will ever truly take away the pain of injury or lengthen their organs / muscles lifespans. He also contracted arthritis in his dominant hand at the age of 31 because of overuse. I don't know where off the top of my head, but I've seen the list of Allen Iverson's injury reports over the years, it's scary stuff to think about. Dude's broken just about every bone below the neck at some point during his career.
buttmuncher.ops
yeah that's expected of A.I. he's probably my favorite point guard. i don't think there's many players that make it all the way to the finals and lose while making season mvp. the organizations did him real dirty his last two years in the league; he had at least 3 good years left in him if they had traded him to a title contender. AND he breaks kids like no other..that 3 pointer over tyronn lue? hilarious. but yeah, the injury reports on him are high because he's a scrappy player that goes hard in the paint no matter what. a real athlete that wasn't scared of anybody even being among the smaller build of players.
