Dark Sage
Something on the internet's been bothering me lately and that's the prevalence of E-stalking. Mostly what I'm bothered by are the type of people who post threads like the Tvtropes mock threads and the PYF mock threads on Something Awful. I'm not bothered by who they're targetting because nearly everyone they make fun of in there is terrible and creepy. I'm more bothered by the posters themselves because they are completely lacking in self awareness; basically they don't seem to be aware that they themselves are creepy, aspy, and obsessive as fuck. In other words, I'm bothered by the inherent hypocrisy of these people. They may not be the ones who made the posts that they mock but they're still creepy for following every single post made by these guys and actively seeking out something creepy to share and get offended by. One common comment that the people who post in these threads make is that the people they make fun of have no life, which is true. However they do not seem to be aware that they also don't really have a life in the first place for spending so much time following these people obsessively in the first place. Finally what bothers me is though those type of threads are made for comedic purposes, its really not that funny. Some of the stuff they find is legitimately funny but a lot of the time, it is simply gross or disturbing. The threads tend to go on for hundreds of pages so the type of stuff that gets posted (both content and reactions) is generally repeated over and over again. As everyone knows, a joke is less funny if you repeat it more than once. Plus the reactions aren't even that comedic in the first place and some people actually take the threads somewhat seriously. At least that's what it seems like to me. Am I the only one bothered by this type of thing? I admit I did stuff like that when I was younger but I realized how creepy and dumb it was and quit doing it. To be honest, I know that everyone has seen someone dumb on the internet and have looked for some of their posts before, but there's a difference between that and actively stalking somebody online waiting for them to say dumb/creepy shit and thats what bugs me. I'm not just picking on Something Awful btw. 4chan does it too and the CWC wiki is basically the threads I just bitched about multiplied by 100. eclipse
Before the Internet, there was gossip. And celebrity rags. This isn't new. EDIT: Neither is projection, or teasing, or a bunch of other human habits that are available to a wider audience thanks to the Internet. Paperblade
I'm not sure why you're complaining about this on SF because they're almost as bad. Edited October 21, 2012 by Paperblade
Ike-Mike
You can control the flow of intormation that is leaking through the internet. Because that is what the internet age is about; control.
Raven
I fall into the category of "I don't give a fuck what other people do on the internet," and thus am not bothered in the slightest. But yes, the type of people you mentioned in your post do exist - and yet they always have existed, in real life too. An example I can provide is when I was a student, there was a girl who was pretty much stuck up her own ass and would sometimes act like a bitch. I wasn't bothered by it, however there were many people who were, and thus would talk about her - especially after something's been said or done by the girl. While I sometimes agreed with the things said, I was mostly thinking "I don't give a fuck, just let her keep being a bitch and shut up about her." It happens. Original Alear
Sometimes I'm bothered by it. When I am bothered by it, I tend to close the tab/window.
