Chocolate Kitty
depends on the general setting of the writing if it's like, paper mario for example, I love it in something that seems much more serious of a setting, like FE, then no, it just ruins the quality of the writing it all really depends on the situation and the execution, if either are off, it's just bad. This. It depends on the kind of writing thats going on, the sort of story being presented, the genre, the characters, everything. If Game Of Thrones broke the fourth wall, id be all "da fuck? no!" But when something like My Little Pony does it, its hilarious.
riariadne
depends on context. Personally metal gear always gets a free pass though

Gone2Ground
Something like Spaceballs, which is obviously not meant to be serious, can do it, but a serious work of fiction can't. Can you imagine if something like Citizen Kane suddenly had the title character turn to the screen and ask 'Everybody get that?'. I shudder. Freohr Datia
Heehee yeah that was pretty awesome ^~^ Yeah I like when people (and ponies~) break the fourth wall~ But I do have to agree it isn't as funny if it's from something on the more serious side... x3 Edited November 23, 2012 by Freohr Datia
Prims
it's one of the most overused and unfunny tropes these days, particularly in video games it's not always terrible but needs to be subtle to be enjoyable most of the time

Rehab
More or less agreed, it either needs to be approaching subtle (serious) or it needs to totally Kool-Aid Man the wall (funny) IMO

Should never be used in serious shit, and I don't think it would even fit in most comedies.

Esau of Isaac
But the fourth dimension is just time. We're all moving fourth dimensionally. We just can't control it. At least you guys can't. I just got back from the 1100s and boy are my arms tired folks.
