I am in fact a Filipino, and people are often confused on what we are,if we're Pacific Islander,Asian,Spanish, nobody really knows...

So I'll give a brief history...

The Philippine Islands are split into 3 major islands and are ran by multiple tribes, and ethnic groups. Around the Ming Dynasty, parts of northern Philippines (Luzon) traded with, was raided by and inhabited by the Chinese.Around this same time the Spanish built bases and also inhabited parts of the Philippines.

Now let's skip further a little bit...

The Philippines was invaded by the Japanese, during the "Battle of the Philippines". Which the battle resulted with Japan occupying the Philippines.

Question: What are Filipinos to you in terms of race?

NOTE: These are only major colonizations, there are minor ones like UK,Portugal and Netherlands, but they are minorities within Filipino mixes.

Asian. You're too far in to be Pacific Islander, and your language isn't in the Romance family, even if it has a whole lot of Spanish loan words. Filipino is to Spanish as English is to French.

Spanish = someone from spain.

I don't know how someone could think of filipinos as spanish. Must be the association that some people in the US have that everyone that speaks spanish is "spanish" which isn't true (the right term is hispanic)

Filipinos are Gundams

That's the first time I've heard that.

I just go with what's convenient for me if it's just informal verbal exchange.

If it's on paper, I usually mark Asian *IF* there is a distinction between the two.

I don't usually give a damn. Mainly because our television programming puts standard Asian dramas as masterpieces campared to our shameful excuse of entertainement.

I've heard another statement from a Filipino person that there's even some African mixed in(?)

Before I actually heard much of anything about/met them, I probably would've said "Asian, vaguely," but now the impression I get most is that they seem like even more of a mix of (near-literally) almost everything than most people
Like, if some genetic process mixed the (racial) physical characteristics of everybody in the world and constructed a person from that, my (uneducated, really) assumption is that said person would look more like a Filipino person than any other ethnic group I'm aware of

(fuck I hope that doesn't sound insulting)

Side note: the biggest Filipino population outside of the Philippines or the U.S. is in.. Saudi Arabia? More stuff I wouldn't have guessed

except it's not

no?

ok, sorry then =/

Still, spanish is someone born in spain, not someone who speaks spanish.

not like you don't know that, since you're argentine

Asian, a nice big blanket term that includes:

Arabs, Japanese, Russians and Indians.

-

Filipinos do often get mistaken for Hispanics. When I was over there, I was frequently thought of to be Filipino when I am Mexican- American, over here in America the Filipinos have a smiler problem I hear. I always wondered why that is the case and now I know a part of the reason why is that Filipinos and Mexicans have some Spanish blood in them.

You, however, are no gundam.

Not quite sure how you could ever justify calling Russians Asian. Even if we're using a term as broadly as you are here, Russians are definitely European.

Then what about the Russians who live east of the Urals? Isn't that being the Asian portion of Russia means those Russians are Asian? I agree that it's not a term to use in the general sense, but it's not entirely incorrect either since there are some where it does apply.

The ol' wise Olmec is correct. It's a questionable thing maybe I should make a thread about it too? *shot*

I'm Filipino and I identify myself as Asian.

Same here, the reason for making this topic,I had an argument with a couple of Filipinos whether we were asian or not,I was saying we were asian because we're close to the Chinese sea and is considered an asian country by other sources, but ignorant people :/.

Heh, considering how close the islands are to the Asian mainland, saying you aren't Asian is like saying the Madagascans aren't African, or the British and Irish aren't European, or the Caribbeans aren't from the Americas. That's the way I see it at least.

On the other hand, I'd also consider you Pacific Islanders since you live in islands surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, but that's just me taking the term very literally. Though it isn't incorrect, when you think about it.

Time for A Lesson That Clipsey Will Probably Mangle And No One Cares About:

When I think Pacific Islander, I think of someone whose ancestry hails from Polynesia/Melanesia/Micronesia, as seen here. Since the Philippines (which are misspelled on that map) don't fall under either of those, I don't consider you guys to be Pacific Islanders.

There can be Asian Russians, but that hardly makes the Russian ethnic group Asian. By that logic every ethnic group is probably Asian, although I suppose I can't technically confirm that there are any Native Americans or Australian Aborigines living in Asia currently.
