Introduction to SF Mafia [READ THIS FIRST IF YOU'RE NEW]

Dear reader,

Welcome to Serenes Forest Mafia. If you are new to the site or new to mafia in general, please take the time to read this post before signing up for any games. Maybe you already know what mafia is about from other sites or from reading one of our previous games, but in case you do not, here is a short introduction:

Mafia is a game of wits. It involves an uninformed majority known as the Town and an informed minority within the Town known as the Mafia.

Every cycle is split up into two phases. During the Night phase, the Mafia picks a person to kill that night. In addition, if you have a special role (known as a power role), you may use it depending on the stipulations within that role. For instance: If I am a Hooker, I may "hook" a person during a night. This is a roleblock and anyone who has been hooked will have their night action voided for that night. This is not restricted to only the Mafia or the Town.

During the day phase, the Town (and Mafia) get together to discuss the events of the previous night and to vote on a lynch target. The Town wins by eliminating the Mafia and the most sure way of doing so is by lynching a suspicious person. Lynches require a majority of the town agreeing to happen.

For a regular game of one Mafia vs. the Town, the Mafia wins if they achieve parity with the Town during either phase (it is then impossible to lose the game). The Town wins if all of the Mafia members have been eliminated. Some games feature Third Party roles, which may win at various points during the game depending on their special win condition.

Now that you know the general procedure of the game, there are a few other points we would like you to keep in mind:

-Be active. The most important aspect of this game is to actually post in the thread, otherwise you're not really playing after all. Not only that, if you sign up and don't actively participate, you're dragging down the rest of your team. As such, we will generally expect you to post at least once every 24 hours, although more posts are of course appreciated (as long as it doesn't devolve into spamming). In other words, make sure you actually have enough time to play.

-Try to post meaningful content. This ties a bit into the previous point, but in general this means that we expect you to read the thread and form your own opinion on what's going on. We don't expect you to be right all the time, or to know everything related to game theory, so don't be afraid of making mistakes - just take the game seriously.

-Be respectful. Due to the nature of the game, discussion can get quite heated at times and some harsh words may be spoken, however don't go overboard with this and don't actively try to annoy others. Likewise, if you feel insulted, try not to let it get to you too much, the other person probably isn't trying to insult you on a personal level. Hosts will deal with these situations as they see fit. In very severe cases, a moderator may take action; remember that you're playing this game on Serenes Forest and are expected to follow our Code of Conduct as a result.

Again, the above is what we are expecting from you. If you want to get to know the game a bit better before joining the fun, we have guides on various subjects here and here. If you have any questions before joining a game, feel free to post in our General Mafia Discussion thread, or join us on IRC:

Server - darkmyst.org

Channel - #SForestMafia

If you have any questions while playing a game, please direct them to the game's host. Especially do this if you are unsure about any rules, we would rather clarify something one more time than having to deal with unnecessary modkills.

Lastly, when joining a game, pay attention to the specific game type. There are three different ones, No Outside Contact games, Limited Outside Contact games, and Outside Contact games:

In a No Outside Contact game, all conversation goes on within the game thread. Information is either public to all or not known (with the exception of your personal role information). Players must then rely on "scumhunting" to find and lynch mafia members. Scumhunting is the art of finding a mafia player by analyzing their in-thread behaviour.

Outside Contact allows any player to privately speak to another player about the game. They may discuss anything they like, including win conditions (if the players are on opposing factions but have a mutual goal to work to) and ways to achieve these conditions.

Limited Outside Contact games are a mixture of the concepts introduced above. The majority of the game takes place within the game thread, just like in No Outside Contact games, however the host grants the players some form of private communication in limited amounts.

Now you're good to go. We hope you will enjoy your stay.
