No Emblem

Just this morning I came up with the idea of removing all story and characters and only keeping the core gameplay in. This means taking out all character portraits(still not sure if it should be the FE8 prototype placeholders or leave them out completely), dialogue, music, and even names, which would be the name of the class the unit is part of. Map sprites would be replaced with blue/red/yellow squares labeled with the first 1 or 2 letters of the class it shows. Battle animations would also be replaced with simple text showing the damage dealt and taken. Maps might even be replaced with a checkerboard pattern with red walls and purple village squares. It'll really feel like 1978 again!

Also, I don't even know how to hack, but if I ever do, this would be a good start. Why make mugs and get ridiculed for them when you could make no mugs at all?

Honestly, this will not be that much impressive. I mean, what is a game without dialogues, maps, characters, ecc...? I don't personally like the idea of playing a fire emblem with only the gameplay. This is my idea, anyway.

Think of it as the opposite of Battle Chess.

I believe that the POINT is to solely focus on the gameplay. Instead of worrying about graphics, he can make the gameplay to the best of his ability.

Anyways, I support this.

You're correct. Hopefully Good Captains Lerning Games can get to work on it immediately.

Maybe after i'll see i'll like it. But imho you have to change a bit the characters, at least. playing a game like fe6/7/8 but with only the gameplay core will be, for me, boring. If you edit the chapters and you change them into a different thing, even without the text, the characters, ecc... it can be a good thing. This is only my opinion, as i said, it's possible that i'll change idea after i'll see it

"An actual game" perhaps? If a game were nothing but the things you've listed it wouldn't even be a game. If you play games for those things and not for the sake of playing games, consider renting movies instead.

I don't play games only for those things, but i like them xD When i play a game, i want a good game with good gameplay, ecc... but i still like the characters, the dialogues, and those things. You are right, i'm not saying that you're not, but imho a games like fire emblem needs them. Anyway, i want to know how this project goes: Maybe (ok, i said it 1000 times) a day i'll see the project and i'll totally change idea:D

So basically setup an ASCII tileset, and disable battle animations, making a more chess-like roguelike? Set up some cool gameplay scenarios and I'd be interested in playing :)

I've been thinking about making two versions; "Crunch Emblem" will only have no story, and "MegaCrunch Body" will be what I talked about there.

I'm going to start out by simply making a Sacred Stones hack with all the maps intact(albeit graphically extremely simple), but I might make it a series with various maps to play through. In everything but the FE8 hack you'll select a map and your units and items will be supplied for you.

Seems to be even less interesting that FE1, if you can even manage to do that.

That's what makes it so cool. I could spruce things up by making the interface look like Chess.com, if you want.

I basically did that for all of my FEXP projects. I tend to loathe making story part of the game when I have so much fun just doing the gameplay itself.

FEditor's debug animations are text. Ha-ha!

Removing the story component doesn't mystically make someone better at designing gameplay, and the inclusion of story in Fire Emblem is pretty intrinsic to its identity, IMO.

Also, to be perfectly frank, if someone was after a plotless, pure gameplay orientated skirmish-y tactical game, there are better options.

This is really just a proposed project for me to learn the ropes of hacking.

If you want to learn to hack, the best thing to do would be to get your hands dirty. Download the tools and other junk you need. For this project, you will need to work out Nightmare to edit classes/characters/items etc., and the Event Assembler so that you can actually change what happens. Find tutorials on eventing and see if you can construct a simple chapter and make it work in the game. Mapping tools to make and insert custom maps should be your next priority after that. tbh, if you only care about the gameplay you might as well leave the graphics as they are.

Can't you just learn how to hack? It might take some time (Especially for FE8), but it's worth it in my opinion.
