What if Fire Emblem added a fame and ranking system?

Ranking System: After every battle you're ranked from a scale from F-S on how fast and effective you complete the map. Higher scores equal better items, weapons, new characters, side chapters, etc.

Fame: Whenever a character wins a battle in an arena they gain fame points. More fame equals better rewards. But because your unit is so famous, stronger foes will challenge them in the arena.

And since it takes 1 turn for one battle in the arena, and to earn a good score for the map you have to beat it in a certain amount of turns, you'll have to balance out the two.

Personally I feel people who are really bad at FE shouldn't be forced to miss out on things like new characters and things.... items sure, but not characters.

As for sidequests, those should still be based on conditions - remember, a sucky player could still reset before it's too late - and not a ranking system.

I don't really have an opinion on the ranking system except "OK."

It should really be the opposite I think, like sure, there should be some inscentive for completing maps a little faster, but if you're already struggling to keep up, and you're missing out on good weapons and more characters, its just gonna cause you to struggle more.

But i'm not opposed to reimplementing the ranking system, I thought it was a different way to play the game (even if the funds rank was misleading and the tactics rank was too lenient)

funds rank ... tactics rank was too lenient

I had 5 in everything except tactics, which was 1. If they reimplement ranking, please, IS, make tactics an average of your other scores.

The idea reminds me a little of an Infinite Space mechanic, Fame Points or something, though it might be mostly nominal.

By grinding a lot (dear god, it was a lot of grinding to get to the top of that thing), you could climb up in rank a list that a lot of ingame characters (and a lot of random names) were on, which was apparently some kind of numeric indicator of how badass the sum of your exploits were at that point. The top level rewards were the best ship blueprints in the game, and the lower ones were a bunch of bits you could use to customize your ship better.

I thought it was kinda fun to interact with it, and there was a certain simple joy to seeing my name had eclipsed that of some guy I'd defeated earlier while being so close to matching Darth Fuckstar or whoever, but I think it was something one's mileage would probably vary wildly on. Just because it was so unapologetically "grind, peon, grind" in nature, given the only real way to climb it was to beat a shitload of random battles.

As for OP's thing, I'd probably be happy to have that ingame, but I'm not sure how I'd actually go about designing one. Haven't given it much thought yet

i have literally never had trouble with anything other than funds

Same

Er, didn't FE7 have a ranking system?

Yeah, he's/they're talking about constructing one that has some kind of effect on gameplay, and preferably is also fun to interact with

Funds, exp gain and not getting people killed have never been an issue for me but my god... turn count. Just getting timed in general I hate. Be it Dead Rising, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Majora's Mask, Sonic, just... I mean they're all still REALLY fun but I just HATE being timed. I like taking my time and planning my moves accordingly. Now I have gotten S rank in FE 5,6 and 7 but my god... that wasn't even fun... I think its a neat idea but I wouldn't want someone to get jipped out of a character or side chapter just because they took too long.

About the Fame idea you have: thats pretty much what the arena does except for the special awards. You fight opponents based on your level and as you level up you fight tougher opponents. Unless you mean fighting other people from distant lands based on your Fame level that your characters only heard stories about and they come to fight you in a surprise match. These characters could be cameo appearances if this was a thing with IS. How about this for FE14?

I was thinking more on: The more fame you get from fights in the arena, the stronger they get. Regardless of level. Also, adding on to your idea of cameos and unique fighters showing up, what if you could unlock special characters by having a certain character reach a certain fame point and fighting/winning the duel against said special character(s)?

I might be okay with rankings effecting gameplay in some way, but it would need to be minimal. For the most part, those sorts of ranks should be something completely optional for players to go after that won't negatively effect them if they choose to ignore it.

I guess fame would be interesting, but if it only matters in the arena, I don't see it doing much overall.

Not untirely related, but something like Chaos Frame would be interresting. (Basically, the more you attack a group, the less they like you).

Basically, difficulty settings would be set by your actions. The more people you kill of some nation (or in general), the stronger they will become. (For example, if you avoid the Bern Wyvern Knight all the way, they will just have some Wyvern Knight here and there, but if you kill them all, you'll be ambushed by a bunch of Wyvern Lords).

You can also have the rewrds from village depending of your CF.

FE always told you human life is important, but gave you no incensitive.

Oh, I see. This makes it harder for people to arena abuse though, which is a semi good thing you don't want the game to be too easy now would you? I would think you'd have to win the battle before you can move on to the next cameo/special character. What I always did in the GBA link arena is when I beat the game, I would choose my top 5 characters from that playthrough and they would start at the bottom of the "rankings" and they would have to fight their way up to the top against my other top 5 characters from other playthroughs and see which team was the best. This is exactly like the Paper Mario Thousand Year Door thing in Glitzville (if you played it). So if IS were to do this I'd say this should be in the Extras and you'd pick your best character(s) to fight off against stronger foes and a few cameo's here and there. You can get free weapons, stat boosts, items, but no exp. points because you can abuse it.

The Tellius series has a similar system already => Bexp.

The sooner you finish a chapter or the more partner units survive, the more bexp. you get. This can you use to boost your units.

I like the idea in general, but there should not be unlocked that much. It would be kinda unfair for newcomers. So I agree with this statement:

Personally I feel people who are really bad at FE shouldn't be forced to miss out on things like new characters and things.... items sure, but not characters.
