Well they were actually meant to be at the boarder of leinster when the scene starts so it was more like she was going as far as she could to see him off without getting into a war zone and then without his permission going a tiny but further. Then they were under ambush and couldn't really turn back. I don't think the scene was meant to be half a continent from home with Cuan suddenly realizing his wife and child were there. If it's pretty much in Thracia then the blame goes squarely on Ethlyn's lap in my opinion.

Look at the world map. Unless they were using a ship, from Lenster they would have to go a long way in order to reach the Yield Desert.

They could have used a ship, it's not a that big a stretch. Though the south part of the Yied Desert has high cliffs if Chapter 7 is anything to go by. Regardless Cuan does tell her to go back once there was any chance of fighting. Or as the script says once they're in enemy territory.

He also says he never would have let her come if he knew what she was thinking so I reckon the scene is pretty clearly implying Ethlyn was meant to go back even if the map suggest she went a lot further than she logically should have. I'd say it's a limitation of the gameplay. They wanted to show the ambush on screen to make the player feel helpless about it but Sigurd wasn't anywhere near the right area so they Ethlyn and Cuan just warp skipped there in order to show the scene without a cut away.
