Fruity Insanity
Play FE12 instead.
Klokinator
I think FE2 is way better than FE3, but I haven't played either before so don't take my word on it.
Dandragon
Use Sirius, Minerva, Julian, and Merric as they are forced on the final chapter in order to recruit people and make a boss fight a LOT less annoying.
Ishi
If it's book 1 use barts he's better than sagi and magi and if its book 2 don't hold onto axes you get no Axe users. Also don't throw star shards into storage instead equip them to units they increase growth rates.

Dismounted units can only use swords, and mounted units can only use lances. This is universal for all of them except the bow users, who just use bows either way. Randoman
Also, levelling up while holding the Star Orb will increase level up gains (it's +30% for all growth rates, which is massive) and holding Star Orb Shards (like Virgo, Libra, etc.) will generally increase level up gains overall slightly (but may lower certain stats growths depending on the Orb). Stats also max out at 20, whether you're promoted or not. Also, if a mounted character has a maxed stat, you might want to dismount that character when they level up so that they get maxed out stats in both their mounted and dismounted states. Considering that all final chapters are indoors, this will be a significant factor in the endgame.

And to get the true ending, you need to get all five orbs.
Robert Stewart
If it's book 1 use barts he's better than sagi and magi and if its book 2 don't hold onto axes you get no Axe users. Also don't throw star shards into storage instead equip them to units they increase growth rates. That's assuming you want an Axe user in Book 1. It's entirely possible to not use one, and that might be a good idea considering how bad Axes are in FE3. Anyway, one thing to keep in mind is that, unlike in other games, you can't repair Staves. Also, in Book 1 make sure you give Shiida Jagens Silver Lance, since she can use it right off the bat.

The selection is limited, but the ones that exist are all perfectly reasonable weapons. The hand axe is actually the only halfway decent 1-2 range weapon until the Gradivus becomes available. Eh I guess they aren't that bad, but they're not really a necessity You don't NEED an axe user in Book 1 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
