Freedom Planet

Didn't see a thread on this so thought I'd see if anyone else has been checking it out?

For those who don't know, it's the game that was started as a Sonic fan game but then transitioned into its own IP. It's on Steam and GOG and coming to Wii U soon apparently.

It's currently sitting at 10/10 on steam user reviews and is quite seriously the best Sonic game in 20 years. Seriously!

It's very similar to Shovel Knight in the sense that it doesn't feel like an ode to retro games, it actually just feels like it'd been plucked out of the past. In the same way Shovel Knight looked like the best NES game they could've possibly made, this looks like the best Genesis game they could've made.

Well, the game most certainly looked like a Sonic game but I wouldn't say it really plays as one. If I would try to pin it down, I would say it plays more like Mega Man X with boss battles in the style of Gunstar Heroes.

Either way, I think what amazes me the most about this game is how well it scales. It starts out fun but every consequent level ends up being more awesome then the last. Every time you think it can't get any better, the following level proves you wrong. And it keeps that up until the very end.

It's a shame the Wii U version got delayed. It shouldn't take too long, though since the delay is only because of a console freezing bug. The port itself is already done.

Yeah, Totalbiscuit said that in his playthrough: that he didn't think it really felt like Sonic.

I'll be completely honest, I have no idea where that's coming from. It feels almost identical to Sonic to me! Are you sure that's not just because people have forgot what the early Sonics were like?

In my case I only played classic Sonic games relatively recently when they were rereleased on 3DS and Steam, so I don't think so.

It's hard to really pinpoint why things feel the way they do, so this isn't really something that I can explain. But I should be able to note at least a few fundamental differences to the Sonic games.

For one thing, enemies can't hurt you by simply touching you, they have to actually attack you. This is really unusual for a platformer and in a game with a lot of sidescrolling like this one, this makes a massive difference. In classic Sonic games, I don't understand how you can stay fast without constantly running into something unless you have memorized the whole level, but here enemies actually need some time to react. You are also not very dependent on your momentum. Even if you have no speed, you can still slowly walk up walls.

But the game is definitely a lot more combat focused. Enemies are more complex and a lot of them have HP, so if you want to deal with them quickly, you have to mind your tools. And there are a lot of attack moves to consider, especially as Lilac. The normal attack, the crouching attack, an Uppercutt, a falling kick, the multi-hitting Dragon Cyclone which can be used both on the ground and in the air as a double jump, and of course the Dragon Dash. Meanwhile, Sonic simply jumps or rolls into things and they always go pop in a single hit.

But one thing that is very much like Sonic is that the levels are very large, so there is room to explore and to take several routes. It helps that all the characters have amazing mobility and that there are basically no bottomless pits.

Balancing scale growth with scope creep usually leads to a very good game. I'll definitely have to get this one.

Freedom Planet is a grand game I highly recommend it but..

It's currently sitting at 10/10 on steam user reviews and is quite seriously the best Sonic game in 20 years. Seriously!

Arrogant comments like this piss me off, considering Sonic Generations, Colors, Both Rush Games, almost all the Advance Games, and a multitude of others including the Adventure ones, I'd rank higher than this game.

If you were an actual Sonic fan, maybe you'd refrain from comments like this. Considering Freedom Planet isn't actually a Sonic game, it has some similar physics to the classics sure, but as Brightbow said, it has more akin with Megaman X and Gunstar Heroes while having Sonic elements. As a fan of all things Sonic since the original, I think I can tell you if its Sonic like or not, but Brightbow already addressed it all anyways.

Well, the connection to Sonic is most certainly strong, the game did start out as a mere Sonic fangame after all. Heck, the main heroes in the final game are a bunch of literal Sonic OCs taken from someone on Deviantart who created them close to 10 years ago.

But yeah, in the end Freedom Planet definitely succeeded at being it's own thing.

Edit:

Btw, I would like to gush a bit about the intro cutscene of the game. Because I think that this is what really sold me to the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNAWuXr22js

It reminds me a lot of the Mega Man Zero 1 opening, but it's on a whole different level. This dark ambience is really neat from the get go. But then there is this massive gunship with it's amazing spritework and this really cool fights scene between all those soldiers. And then we've got Brevon, finishing things himself. I absolutely adore Brevon. I love these kind of dark, evil villains in otherwise bright cartoons in general. But Brevon is far better then someone like Robotnik in Sonic SatAM because he is a lot more menacing when it comes to his actual actions. To put it this way: SatAM Robotnik got Jet Boots, Brevon got a knife. The game has no gore and no blood, but Brevon knows how to make his knife look scary all the same, as he demonstrates right from the get go.

And there is just so much love for details here. Like, even the quickly killed king from Shuigang gets a cool weapon for himself. And I love just how Genesis the whole thing looks, especially that text roll at the end.

Some people don't seem to like the voice work but I think it works really well.

But the best thing about this intro is that the actual game really delivers on all that buildup. Like, that gunship? It is not only a cool boss but what is especially amazing about it is that it also feels every bit as powerful as it looks. Like, I was kinda expecting it to be one of those lame stationary bosses like Omega's second form in Zero 3, but this boss is nothing like that. It's genuine cartoon animal vs massive gunship action.

As far as random enemies go, the ones I had the most trouble with are those basic robot troopers brevon has.

I'm not a big fan of lilac and carol's exclusive stages. Except the mass ninja slaughter in carol's stage ( repetitive though it may be). I think the lever before the boss in lilac's is a little bs.

Can you explain what you mean by "scope creep" and "scale growth"?

I think you're confusing arrogance with "disagrees with me"

The only reason I really heard about this game was from the YouTuber Somecallmejohnny. I remember him saying something along the lines of the gameplay being solid, but the story trying a bit too hard to be dramatic, or something?

I don't see much kinship between Mega Man X and Freedom Planet. Though a certain boss from FP certainly reminds me of a certain boss from MMX in terms of his style. He's actually a bit more of a challenge to deal with before you memorize his pattern tho (the one from FP).

I guess I prefer FP to the 2d Sonics I've played all the way through (1, 2, generations). They're all good though.

Hey, we've got a new release date for the the Wii U version. It will get released this very Thursday. At least the US version. I hope that nothing will get in the way this time.

Unfortunately, in the case of Europe they fear that it might take yet another month.

Well, if this delay falls on NoE, then I guess that this at least won't get in the way of GalaxyTrail continuing their work on the Mila Story mode and the free Spade/Torque DLC.

I just lost a life because of two things that I didn't know about Milla...

1. She can pick up Carol's fuel tanks

2. When they are thrown, they explode

Those fuel tanks seem to be unique in that since you can simply walk through them, Milla has to stand were they are and press the charge button instead of pressing the charge button and walking into it.

Huh, I never knew that. That'll be handy in my Milla run.

Now that the game is on the Wii U, I can play it with far superior controllers then the PC version... and yet I still get my butt kicked by Neera when playing as Milla.

Milla having only half as much health as the other characters feels a little extreme to me. She has great mobility and powerful ranged attacks, but she cannot use both of them at the same time. And all her attacks need to be charged for a while. So from my experience, because she is so complicated, if something throws you off your rhythm then it's difficult to recover with her.

Milla is hard for me to use too, like I can get a roll going then I just get crushed if I mess up.

Also Torque is coming next month as a playable character, according to Steam, also Milla is getting an adventure mode with the update. Spade will be added sometime next year.

Also I'm gonna be doing an LP of the game here soon

I hope it's not the end of the world that I am 2 days over the 1 month limit. I just wanted to say that the Torque patch wasn't fully done until christmas, as they intended. But they still released it as a Steam Beta for PC users.

I played a bit of the Beta already and currently I get an empty achievement unlocked screen whenever I finish a level. Unfortunately, that screen won't go away. So while Milla's story mode appears to be in the game, it seems to be essentially inaccessible right now since you can't reach the first cutscene. However, they have already announced a soft patch to disable achievements altogether until they can fix this issue properly.

Torque is currently not playable in both Adventure and Classic mode. He can only be played in Time Attack, with most of his levels already unlocked. Interestingly, he has a locked level before Dragon Valley. I would guess that this one is probably going to be an entirely new level that shows the battle of his ship and Brevon's, before they both crashed.

Torque seems to play a lot like Epsilon from Alien Soldier. Although he also has a standard gun that requires no ammunition. He can use his energy bar to fly. He also has a sprint but using it will deplete his remaining energy instantly. But it will already recharge while he is sprinting, with no delay.
