Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans

Probably never gonna watch it, simply because I can't sustain my suspension of disbelief anymore. The entire mobile suit in atmosphere instead of tanks and planes thing, the bright colors and those goddamn big heads all the suits get, all of the decorative bits on them and their general bulk and shape - I just can't buy into it anymore.

I mean if I looked too hard into things I probably wouldn't enjoy anything fiction related anymore.. just saying lol

Although I get what you mean since Gundam aims to be realistic and it ultimately isn't realistic at all. Still though, it's kind of entertaining to watch them move around like turds for a land fight (unless they're Jesus "Kira Yamato" Christ and can reprogram their OS on the fly) until they properly utilize their thrusters.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm not too familiar with the gundam universe and I'm not a big fan of mecha, but I have been watching the show from day one. I'm very surprised with the angle they are taking with the characters, and I think the atmosphere is very well done. I'm strapped in for the long run, wherever that may lead to. Also yes, that op is one of the best I have seen this season.

I must say, episode 3 is the only one that made me audibly gasp. Especially the scene with the First Corps, and especially

[spoiler=Episode 3 Spoilers]when Mika just ended Crank before he could finish saying thank you.

I get nervous every single week when there's a new episode because I'm sincerely hoping they don't mess it up. The atmosphere is really getting to me, and I personally find it wonderful.

I get the feeling that this is something they don't do often with the gundam franchise, I was ready to dismiss the series quickly if it felt anything but special. I'm very intrigued by it all, and it's been a joy to watch so far.

Mika is a ticking time bomb; that kid is going to blow up someday, and I want be there to see it. I'm keeping a close eye on him and his relationship with Orga, who I think is also very likable and who I feel may not make the end of the show.

I think this show has the makings of a classic for the series, if it keeps going the way it has so far.

Yeah this is way different from the other Gundam series. Seems the closest was 08th MS Team, but even that doesn't have anything akin to child soldiers in it and it has more idealism in its main cast. Gundam X is another thing, but Gundam X was still pretty different in tone despite taking place in a post-apocalyptic earth.

Meanwhile, IBO is a group of basically kids just trying to survive out on Mars which is still probably ill equipped to house life in it despite terraforming.

00 Season 1 got kind of gritty at points, if only because there are a lot of points where they touch on things that are applicable to the modern world.

The major one that they talk about at the start of the series is how many nations, like the middle eastern nations, were completely left in the dust once solar power became the major source of energy. Also how certain countries basically rely entirely on the center of the three major power blocs to provide them with energy. Also, lots and lots of terrorism and terrorist fearmongering.

RE; Mikazuki

I don't see Mika as the type to blow up though. Something about him doesn't seem deranged or particularly disturbing. I think shooting the First Corps in cold blood and shooting Crank were him trying to completely ensure survival as opposed to someone who is secretly crazy. He gets along with everyone around here and I highly doubt he's this stoic person that is holding back his emotions, especially because he gave Kudelia a verbal bitchslap twice ("That means we're not on equal terms to begin with" and "Don't look down on my comrades") and he also lectured Crank on how they aren't victims and that they can fend for themselves, and how they should not be pitied. I think all of this just shows not necessarily a fractured mindset, but someone who was forced to grow up early and embraced it fully.

Although, your prediction does have validity because Orga mentions that Mikazuki doesn't even act normal relative to the rest of the Tekkadan/Third Corps.

Honestly I really don't have any idea what's gonna happen with Orga yet. I know he's charismatic and everything and can rope people into his schemes, but I don't know his side of the friendship with Mika. Mika just seems to believe in the same things Orga does, though, and I bet it's gonna be a little bit before there's a schism between the two. The show is crying out for it and it's crazy how much of a death flag he has on him.

One thing I really just realized and would like to point out is that Mika is probably really really dumb when it comes to everything but combat. He basically lets just about everyone else do things for him. Remember how he said in episode 2 something about how he barely uses his mind anyway? I'm guessing part of his development is obviously a schism with Olga but on top of that the ability to start thinking for himself. Or maybe the Alaya-Vijnana system (which is the coolest Gundam pilot thing I've ever seen) is slowly causing his mind to rot away until he finally hits a vegetative state. Something about the Barbatos definitely gives me the creeps.
