Looking for advice for new playthrough

Hi all,

Upon finding out that Fates would release in the west sometime in 2016 I finally gave in and bought a 3DS alongside Awakening.

I've nearly finished my HM run but I'm somewhat disappointed since the game doesn't offer a real challenge (yeah, I know. Complaining about hard) and I'm not sure I'm ready for the insanity that Lunatic brings to the table.

I'm trying to compromise and come up with something that makes my next HM run a bit more challenging, or, with enough persuasion, sacrifice what's left of my sanity and attempt a Lunatic run instead.

I think that my main issue is that I bought DLC (support the game and all that) but I feel like I shouldn't be using them since all that EXP, gold and items will trivialize the game...

For example, I'm at Chapter 22 now and I can't recall the last time my MU (+Def/-Res) went under 75% HP. Walhart, for all his bravado, had a mere 31% chance to hit for... 7 damage.

Yeah. I might've overdone it a bit with grinding. Oops.

I think the first step towards bringing any challenge back to future playthroughs is to discard Pair Ups - Some pairings are so strong that I can just send them without a care in the world into a mass of enemies and watch them stand at full HP the next turn.. Kind of kills the whole strategy appeal of the game.

Perhaps I could just go Lunatic and grind to my heart's content...

Unless someone has some interesting HM challenges I could attempt? I'm in the middle of moving to a new place so I'll be without internet for several days. Perfect time to get some gaming on.

Also (almost done, I swear), I was surprised at Tharja's effectiveness as a Dark Knight, so I was kind of tempted to use that as MaMU's class next playthrough (possibly paired with Nowi, because Manakete Daughters are great). Any advice on that end as well?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the wall.

If you ban second seals, the game becomes harder by default due to only 40 level ups at most and less people have access to good skills.

Ban it and pair up, and Hard mode becomes rather challenging without being completely insane.

Yea like MC said ban Pair ups and second seals and play it on hard mode with no DLC possibly only 1 try on each DLC if you prefer

Also dont fight mobs on the map and grind bro it makes it waaay too easy, I did it my first time and steamrolled thru the game

Yeah, one time I tried following meta game advice for optimal skills and children, and ended up breaking the game on Hard.

I think it's best to just plan for those kind of things, but don't worry about actually doing them until post-game. The Priam battle is where I start ramping it up.

If you're DLC grinding and find the game to be too easy, start by playing without DLC (until post-Cht.25, at least). You can always add more from there if it's still too easy, but grinding always trivializes the game on any difficulty so you really have no baseline here for exactly what level of difficulty you want.

Thanks guys!

I'll attempt a new HM playthrough without Pair Ups and second seals (okay, maybe one to reclass MU into the Dark Mage line).

Still feels weird to ignore random battles and DLC though (what's the point in having an open world map then?) but that's probably for the best.

I'll post again in a couple days to let y'all know how that went :P
