Fight, Flight, Freeze?

Recommended Posts

So... Had a shoplifter at work when I was closing about two nights ago...

Curious what others would do in a situation like that and to situations of conflict in general?

Would you confront them? Would you run away in some sense? ...would you do nothing/freeze?

Anyone else have some situations/experiences/hypotheticals? :o

(I will share what I actually did... later perhaps...)

That. . .depends.

1. Does this person look/act insane? If yes, I'd quietly let him/her go, so I don't get shanked over whatever was stolen.

2. Am I going to get fired if I let this moron go? If no, then I consider whether or not it's worth it to chase the shoplifter down.

3. Has this person been here before? If no, I give chase - chances are, it'll scare the piss out of them (even if I don't catch them), so they'll go somewhere else.

I'd probably consult/inform somebody else... Somebody who has more authority than I do like a manager or something. Or if I couldn't get one of them then maybe just somebody else to help back me up with dealing with the shoplifter. I'd be afraid of what anybody would do to somebody who's most likely a foot or more shorter than them and who doesn't have that much strength.

Well I think what I would want to do is hide immediately and wait for a more advantageous time to do something about it. So that'd be what I'd generally do. But realistically, especially at a job, you should either just hide or comply because not only is it not worth losing your life but you can seriously get in trouble with your company if you're on the clock and do something that could put your life in danger because you would be a liability.
