If I buy Birthright at the discounted price in-game, where does the game go? The cartridge? The SD card? I'm asking because I want to know how portable this game is. After you buy the other path, you can choose it at the branch of fate at the beginning of chapter 6 or by choosing the option after you reach that point for the first time. Sorry, you should wait to buy the other path if your on another persons 3DS. And yes, if your playing on a physical copy the save is stored in the cartridge.
