In Hoshido or Revelations I'd say you can do whatever you want really. In Conquest though, arguably the best option for Talent would be Lancer since one of the Spear Fighter promotes, Basara, has arguably the best proc in the game, and the class is unobtainable in Conquest outside of captured units.
