Today's Humble Bundle has a bunch of games up for $1, including:

a Sale 4-pack that includes Shining Force & Shining Force 2, as well as Gain Ground ( pretty sweet and challenging Sega game ) + Columns [bejeweled I guess?]

Also Nintendo eShop has Donkey Kong Country and Earthbound up for grabs.

Considering this is a Fire Emblem forum, I have no doubt that many (most?) of the people here would enjoy the first two Shining Force games. They're really good SRPG's that both have surprisingly good world building (mostly because you can actually explore the world as opposed to being limited to just battles) and are very unpretentious, which is a refreshing alternative for me at least. The battle system is more simplistic than FE games, but characters end up feeling more unique in the end due to how the games work (you don't end up recruiting too many units of the same class...well, except Centaur Knights in the first game). Actually, even ignoring the gameplay, characters are more unique due to the wide variety of interesting designs (the art style is a bit off kilter in the first game, but looks much better in the second) and the fact that they aren't all restricted to being human like in Fire Emblem (for the most part). It really feels rewarding to build up each character, and when combined with the HQ (where you can visit characters in between battles, although TBH it's not really very well fleshed out; it's just cool conceptually) you feel like you're building a force (a Shining Force!) rather than just recruiting a bunch of future bench warmers (although the actual unit balance in the games can be hilarious, to speak of it in a positive light). Also the music is very good and fitting! These games are so good, you guys. Everyone should play them.

[spoiler=Proof that the music is good]

I've only played the GameGear shining force, but I grabbed this deal and will be playing SF1 and SF2, can basically agree with Refa from what I've seen too.

I'm so glad you're finally playing SF2.

I really need to get my Shimmying Farce playthrough started. I'm happening up on some free time pretty soon, I might be able to finally script my run out.

In the first game, you just need to talk to the king, go back to trigger a cutscene, talk to him again, buy some items, and you're ready to go to your first battle (ProTip: Use Egress to leave the first battle and go to the hamlet to the right of it to recruit Gong and talk to Jogurt). In the sequel, you just need to go to your school and the game does a pretty good job of leading you on from there I think.

Yeah, the Game Gear one on 3DS VS is more minimalistic (missing out on the exploration which is unfortunate), but it's still pretty good and has some cool characters (redundant names, though).

I mean, what other game series has an armadillo in steampunk armor and a ninja rat? And whatever type of squid thing Domingo is, that adorable beast of destruction~

And I think centaurs were an amazing idea, so cool~

I take for granted how many awesome secrets these games have...

A buck for these two games is a steal. I can't tell you how many times I beat the first game, and the second is one of my absolute fave SRPGs ever. The alternate promotions in SF2 alone give it a lot of replayability and fun options to build your team.

Heck Shining Force 2 is up there on my "Play before you die" top tiers. SF1 can be a bit slow compared to other games in the genre and slower than 2 but they are just very very good if you enjoy the genre at all.

I would recommend Shining Force Sword of Hajya(Gamegear one) for ppl to play through at least one time. It has a much more simplified gameplay and IMO is still challenging in beating ita infamous Freeze3 glitch. It features the only PartySplit i have ever seen in the franchise. Its pretty good. Not SF2 great but still good...i probably rate it above GBA!SF1 but below SEGA!SF1

VC you mean :P: but yeah it kinda feels like a FE in more ways because of the chapter to chapter format.

Haha, sorry for taking so long on it.

Aw wait, I remember magic being dumb op in that game. It's actually a glitch? What's the technicality behind it? :o

Also, which centaurs do you like using in SF1? I dig Mae and Vankar~

Freeze 3 has freeze 4s damage, and vice versa. Enemies get it wayyyyy before you do and it OHKOs most of your army..jaha for sure, when you first find them
